EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I am pleased to present this Annual Report for your consideration. The 2009/2010 annual report is the 98th of the Northern Districts Cricket Association. Only one season to go before we begin our Centenary of seasons.

It was another year with some fresh talent coming through the grades. 37 teams nominated this season and we ended up with 5 grades, with 4th grade being a “super” grade of 11 teams. This was done to create less byes for the teams and on the whole it worked quite well. All grades were very competitive.

We still had no senior representative sides, but by the end of the season, the talk was gathering momentum that we will be able to put together a Telegraph or Martin Shield team this season. I urge all clubs to encourage their talented young cricketers to get involved in representative cricket rather than potentially lose them to other competitions.

In terms of detail, 37 teams nominated for the senior competition with the grading committee settling on 5 grades. 1st, 2nd and 3rd each had 6 teams, 4th grade had 11 and 5th grade had 8. The grading committee has been working well for a couple of seasons now and with the exception of a few decisions that could have gone either way, does a tremendous job. A mid-season review of the teams that were competing compared to the teams that were presented to the grading committee will lead to some further refinement for next season. The lower grades continue to be keenly fought but there is still some challenges finding balance in the higher grades. The higher grades still require careful thought to get the mix right. We have a large pool of talent for the lower grades, but it seems a bit thin in the top couple of grades.

The NDCA junior competition was steady and as we head in to an Ashes year, numbers will rise again. Managing the junior competition is an enormous task. If you are interested in getting involved at any level, I’m sure the Junior Committee would be only too happy to hear from you. Tony Matson is moving on after many years assisting the junior competition and he lives a large void that needs to be filled.

The new ResultsVault based system is becoming easier to use as teams become familiar with the way that it works. This season the system was used for all of the trophies which has made the job of collating the data much easier.

Grounds continue to be the greatest threat to our competition. The demand on the valuable land that we play on is only going to increase. New grounds are not being built in our area and it may be necessary to cap the number of teams we can accept in to the competition. This is not something we want to do, but may be necessary to keep teams playing every week. Councils will always face pressure from the many different lobby groups and our Executive must maintain good relationships with the councils. We thank the council staff of Hornsby, Parramatta, Ryde and Strathfield for their continued support throughout the season and their best efforts in meeting the needs of their customers.

We also use grounds in the local schools and we acknowledge their assistance in providing their grounds for our senior and junior competitions. Schools used this season were, Marsden High, Epping North, Epping West, Epping Boys, Carlingford High and Melrose Park.

Finally, thank you all for a great year of cricket, enjoy reading this annual report and I look forward to you all returning in 2010/11, our 99th season of cricket !!!

Jason LeGuier, Secretary

President’s Report

At the Adjourned AGM in August 2009 Treasurer John Prowse presented his last Annual Financial Report prior to his retirement. A vote of thanks was carried by all in attendance and John was presented by Matt Roberts a Shield which included his photo surrounded by the logos of all the Cricketing Clubs both Seniors and Juniors. John thanked all and extended his best wishes to NDCA in the coming Seasons. The new Treasurer Craig Menzies then took the chair of Treasurer.

I wish to express my thanks on your behalf to Secretary Jason LeGuier, Records Officer Fiona Harrison and Assistant / Minute Secretary Ashley Grant for their assistance in running the senior cricket during the season. Also my thanks to Chairman / Secretary Meryl O’Connell, Recorder Craig Menzies and the Junior Executive Committee for the running of the Junior Competition. We thank Di Galloway of Murdog Productions for the typing and lay-out of the Annual Report and to Greg Berriman of Dundas United CC for organising the printing.

The Grading Committee this season consisted of each Club Secretary along with the President, Secretary, Treasurer and Records Officer. It worked well as each Club was able to present how each of their teams were graded which assisted in the discussions of their Grading. Each player was given five (5) provisionals to enable the Executive Committee to control the grading of the players during the season. I thank the Grading Committee for their time and effort in carrying out their duties. We will continue to improve the system of the Grading of teams and players.

As a flow-on from the previous seasons and our continual support of the Spirit of Cricket we again ran a ’s night at the start of the season and it was well attended. We explained our Local Rules and there was many questions asked and some understandings were explained and sorted out. The intent is for these explanations be passed down to all teams and newly elected Captains. We will continue to have these Captain’s night at the start of each season and we will then put these Local Rules onto the website so that then can be continually be reread during the season.

NDCA was represented at the Ryde City Sports Council Meetings and the Hornsby Shire Council Sports Council Meetings during the season. Although we are in continual contact with all Councils, namely Ryde, Hornsby and Parramatta and have set up a communication system it is not always used. For example it was very upsetting that the groundsman / Council did not notify me as the Hirer early on Sunday morning that vandals had water damaged the overnight at ELS Hall 3 during the 1st Grade Final. The wicket was not properly prepared for the game with the groundsman leaving without notification. After waiting around to see how the wicket was drying out, the official umpires finally declared the wicket unfit for play. We will ensure in the future that we will have access to a groundsman to prepare any damages that may occur overnight and hand over a wicket that we can use and determine the winner by playing the game.

The system for The Keith Hinchcliffe Spirit of Cricket Trophy for First Grade was changed this season whereas points for Dress, Conduct, Knowledge of Rules, Sportsmanship and Punctual, were allocated after each game by the Captains and forwarded to the President who maintained a spreadsheet. As there were washouts the system was converted to a percentage of the games played. In the past at the end of the Season each Captains rated their opposition teams individually and awarded a set of points covering the whole season. The new system will be reviewed on how it is accepted by each Club. There is a recommendation for discussion that the Spirit of Cricket be extended to cover all Grades.

Our Centenary of Seasons is only two years away. We are starting to prepare the cricket statistics from as early as possible, thanks to the Annual Reports kept by Patron Keith Shaw going back to the 1930’s, but they don’t go back to the inaugural meeting on 22nd July 1908 held in the Eastwood School of Arts. Therefore is there any information among our readers that you can get from your Grandfathers, Fathers, Uncles or any relatives that may have played for NDCA and they may have some stories, photos or something that can be put into our Centenary of Seasons Report. Photos can be scanned and returned as early as possible. Any information can be sent or picked up by President John Crane, contact (H) 02 9487 1385.

John P. Crane, President

ARTHUR KEITH SHAW, PATRON

18th November 1922 – 11th April 2010

Sadly I report the passing of our co-patron Keith Shaw after a short illness. We extend our condolences to his family and friends. Keith was involved with NDCA for near 74 years out of the 102 years of the association and he is the reason why NDCA is a very strong cricket association today. He will be sadly missed.

Last year we printed a report on his cricket history with NDCA and I repeat that history.

1936 – 1938 Junior player with Blaxland Wanderers CC to U16 1938 – 1987 Senior player (served in WW 2 from 1939 to 1946) with Eastwood Juniors and Eastwood CC, which was renamed Eastwood Rugby CC Represented NDCA in the Martin Shield Open Representative team

Office Bearer : 1948 – 1974 Chairman / Secretary / Selector Juniors (Eastwood Oval and Marist Bros Eastwood nets) 1950 – 1953 Records Officer 1953 – 1973 Treasurer 1973 – 1987 President 1958 Awarded a Life Member of NDCA 1989 Elected Patron Delegate to NDCC and Balmain CC

Keith continually attended our AGM and Presentation Nights in July. He also worked with The Ryde Sports Foundation and Ryde City Council.

The Stand at Eastwood Oval which has the turf wicket for 1st Grade, was renamed The Keith Shaw Stand.

Awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 2000 John P Crane, President

Wet Weather Committee The Wet Weather Committee again comprised of Kel Gray and Col White ably assisted by President John Crane. The rain came again in Round 2 with day 2 completely washed out. Rain again closed all turf grounds on day 1 of Round 3, West Epping on Round 8 day 1, all grounds in Round 12 for the 1 dayers, and in Round 13 all for day 1 and the turfs on day 2. All the Semis were played in good weather but in the Finals Grades 2 to 5 played in good weather but the 1st Grade Final was not playable on day 2 due to overnight watering and damage by vandals.

Decisions of the Committee are made after notice from Councils whether turfs were closed and after taking into consideration our duty of care for the safety of all registered players. A special thanks to Kel, Col and John.

Umpires The Umpires Association continually aims to cover a grade per round with the available umpires, so that each grade would have an umpire at least twice per season, enabling the costs to be spread evenly among teams.

Peter Tate umpired in Round 1 and Homer Paxton umpired Round 2. We extend our thanks to Umpires Bob Flint, Col Hamilton and John Crane who stood during the season.

We again provided Umpires John Crane, Bob Flint and Col Hamilton to umpire Oakhill College home 1 day school First XI and Second XI games with the intent that if their turf wicket becomes available during our 1 day games we then can negotiate to its use in 2nd Grade.

Eight of the ten games in the Semi-finals were covered by umpires, and all five Grades had an umpire in the Finals with thanks to Craig Menzies, Dale Arnott, Alan Harrison, Jason LeGuier Josh and Ken Tompsett. The Junior Inter Association Representative games had umpires appointed and our thanks and their names are reported in President Bob Flint’s Umpires Report in the back of this Annual Report.

We continually encourage all players, managers and coaches for Seniors and Juniors to sit for the NSW Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association training and examination course. The Juniors again are organizing a training and examination Umpire’s course following their success last season.

6

Records Officer’s Report The 2009/2010 season saw another increase in players with 37 teams and 632 registered players from 7 clubs. Due to so many teams nominating for 4th Grade the Association decided on a slightly different break down of the Grades so we had 1st Grade (6 teams), 2nd Grade (6 teams), 3rd Grade (6 teams), 4th Grade (11 teams) and 5th Grade (8 teams). The Junior Competition had 74 teams (up from the previous season) with approximately 940 players from 12 clubs. There was also the introduction of a non-competitive Under 9 competition with 5 teams and there were 69 teams from Under 10s to Under 16s.

This season we had some big changes with the shift to MyCricket from Isport and a brand new website at http://ndca.nsw.cricket.com.au. The new website had all the same information with the match results, points tables, team quotients, player performances, players statistics and the Club Championship table. It also provided a complete database on all the registered players in the Association, but as we had a new website it meant that all the clubs had to start from scratch in reloading all of their individual player details into the website.

The match results still had to be entered each week by Sunday noon, so that the match scores could be seen on the website. The deadline for inputting the complete scorecards was Tuesday following the completion of each match. Obviously as we had a new website there were some hiccups especially at the start of the season as everyone got used the new system and how to input the team sheets, match scores and scorecards. By the end of the season most of the Clubs and Teams were inputting everything by the deadlines, there were just a handful of teams that we continued to have problems with. This season we were “relaxed” about imposing fines and penalties on the teams and clubs however for next season these will be enforced and we may be making some adjustments to the deadlines. Any changes to the deadlines as well as the penalties and fines will be confirmed prior to the start of the season.

This season also saw some changes to the procedures in regards to the Clubs getting players approved after the Grading Committee. The clubs had to nominate players that were likely to register for the season which meant that the Grading Committee were able to make more informed decisions at the meeting as they knew about players that were still likely to register. In doing this it also greatly reduced the number of “late registrations” that used to come through after the Grading Committee and after the start of the season.

The team sheets were continued to be checked to ensure that every player was in fact registered with the Associations and playing the correct grade. This was actually made easier this season with the MyCricket website as it was easier to check the scorecards and see the grades that all the players had been playing in during the season.

The Junior Competition also used the MyCricket website for match results and scorecards this season. Thank you to Craig Menzies who not only continued as the Junior Competition Recorder but also took on a lot of responsibility of getting the new MyCricket website up and running for both the Senior and Junior Competition (as well the becoming the NDCA Treasurer).

Regards, Fiona Harrison, Senior Records Officer

WHERE ARE THEY NOW ??

Alyssa Healy

2009/10 was a season of firsts for Carlingford junior who played an integral role in the NSW Breakers reaching the Domestic Twenty20 Final and winning the National League (50 over) crown for a fifth consecutive season.

Starting her first summer as the number one wicketkeeper for the NSW Breakers, Alyssa set a new record National League record for the most dismissals in a season with 11 catches and nine stumpings.

She was also the leading wicketkeeper in the women’s Twenty20 competition with 12 dismissals, and made a career best 89 from 82 balls against Victoria at Manly Oval.

After representing the Australian U/23 team in December, Alyssa was selected in the senior National team, the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars, for a series against New Zealand in February, covering for the injured Australian captain.

She made her One-Day International debut at the Adelaide Oval on 10 February 2010 and is the 187th women to play cricket for Australia. Alyssa capped off a fine year by being named the 2009/10 Cricket NSW Rising Star.

Ellyse Perry

At just 19, Ellyse Perry has established herself as one of the finest female fast bowlers in the world, playing major roles in the success of both the NSW and Australian teams.

The Oakhill junior was the leading wicket-taker in the women’s National League with 22 , as well as playing a key role for NSW in Twenty20 cricket.

This summer also saw Ellyse feature with the bat, with a match winning 62 for NSW against Queensland at North Sydney Oval, and another vital innings of 17 from 24 balls during NSW’s National League Final at the MCG.

On the international stage, she took 25 wickets in the 50 over and Twenty20 series against New Zealand in February and will spearhead Australia’s attack at the 2010 Twenty20 World Cup in May.

Mitchell Starc

During his time with the Berala Cricket Club, was wicketkeeper-batsmen.

However today he is better known as one of the up-and-coming fast bowlers in the RTA SpeedBlitz Blues line-up!

Starc made his First Class debut at the end of the 2008/09 season before representing his State in all three forms of the game in 2009/10.

He now has 23 First Class wickets with best figures of 5-74, 10 One-Day Domestic wickets from five matches and four Twenty20 scalps.

It has certainly been a rapid rise for this young quick, who at the start of the summer found himself playing in the same team as , Phil Hughes, Phil Jaques, Brad Haddin, Michael Clarke and Stuart Clark.

In a year where NSW has been plagued by injuries to fast bowlers, Starc stood tall and is a player to watch for the coming summers.

NORTHERN DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION Incorporated ABN 30 413 972 119 Treasurer’s Report

I would like to start by thanking our former Treasurer, John Prowse, for the healthy financial state that the Association is in and for all his assistance in the transfer of responsibilities. I trust that we can continue to strength our Association and competition over the coming seasons.

For season 2009-10 we have returned a surplus of $4,331. The retained surplus now stands at $28,649.

Cash collections from clubs and others amounted to $111,503 with payments totalling $107,967 as disclosed in the Statement of Cash Flows in the Financial Statements.

Fees received from the senior afternoon competition amounted to $44,100 plus $11,922 registration fees being received from senior players. The junior morning competition continues to contribute to the smooth running of the Association with their players paying $31,527 in fees and the representative players contributing $10,535.

This season we did not transfer any funds to the provision for ground upgrading as that provision stands at $50,000. These funds will be used in the future to assist councils and schools to maintain wickets and grounds to a standard that ensures our players’ can enjoy the facilities at the grounds. If any clubs have suggestions for grounds that require improvement pass them along to the committee to follow up with the councils and schools.

Ground hire from councils and schools continue to be our major cost at $41,399. Eastwood Oval turf wicket was available for use again this season which gave us the use of three turf wickets from round two onwards.

Receivables totalling $3,375 is represented by bonds paid to Parramatta City Council and Ryde City Council of $800 and $2,575 respectively.

NSWDCA continued to reimburse Associations for umpires fees incurred in running of the Inter-Association competition. On behalf of NDCA I would thank NSWDCA and Cricket NSW for this gesture which amounted to $2,950.

It is again pleasing to note that ALL clubs have met their financial commitments as at balance date and I thank clubs for their efforts.

Craig Menzies Treasurer

THE SENIOR COMPETITION Graham Cummins Trophy – First Grade Cricketer of the Year

The NDCA 1st Grade Cricketer of the Year award for season 2009 / 2010 is Tim Cover from Carlingford Waratah.

Tim opened the season in fine form with the bat, with his highest score for the season of 116. He also managed two other unbeaten centuries (102* and 100*) and three half-centuries (71*, 56 and 80*). For the season Tim scored 691 runs at an average of 69.10, a remarkable effort batting in the top order of the first grade competition.

With the ball Tim was just as destructive taking 28 wickets from 131 overs at an average of just 15.57. There were only two instances when Tim failed to claim a wicket and he had season best figures of 4 for 25.

Tim could not be kept out of the match for when he was not bowling he was probably taking one of his 14 catches for the season.

Well done Tim on an outstanding season.

John Prowse Trophy – Cricketer of the Year

The NDCA Cricketer of the Year award for season 2009 / 2010 is Ricky Palmer from Rydalmere 2nd Grade.

Ricky had a great all round season as part of the Premiership winning Rydalmere second grade side.

With the willow in hand, Ricky scored 442 runs at a very modest average of 36.83. This was made from sixteen journeys to the crease, remaining not out on four occasions. He started the season in great form with his highest score of the season 71* and he finished strongly with 60 in the semi-final win and 70 in the grand final victory.

Ricky proved devastating with the ball, sending down 236 overs for an association high of 62 wickets at an average of 10.98 runs per wicket, with a best return of 6 for 32.

Ricky also proved very handy in the field taking 8 catches.

Congratulations Ricky, on an outstanding season. 16

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FIRST GRADE…..Premiers: North Ryde RSL

The 2009/2010 First Grade competition comprised five returning teams (Rydalmere, North Ryde RSL, Epping YMCA, Carlingford and The Vikings) and one new team (West Ryde), who made their return to the top flight after a brief absence. The main talking point (probably) was The Ranch team folding and their players moving to play for North Ryde RSL. The main question was whether any of the teams could step up to slow the Rydalmere juggernaut, which had been dominant for the past 2 years.

The Round 1 draw provided a Grand Final replay, with the new-look North Ryde RSL getting a lesson in just what it would take to challenge the reigning champs. Centuries to John Kosmidis (102*) and Mitch Edwards (105*) were the highlight in a straightforward Rydalmere win. Carlingford’s Tim Cover began his run-scoring rampage with 116 in a crushing win over West Ryde (and took 4 wickets to boot). Sinan Fazlilar set up a good score for YMCA with his 85 but they were unable to bowl Vikings out thanks to a stubborn 66 from Vinnie Coppa.

Round 2 saw rain interfere with proceedings for the first time with draws all round, although Rydalmere’s Harpreet Singh scored 104* and Carlingford’s Daniel West took 4 wickets. Round 3 was all close games, with Carlingford pipping Rydalmere, North Ryde RSL just escaping YMCA and West Ryde edging Vikings. Tim Cover again made runs (71*), on his way to a competition-best 691 for the year with 3x100 and 3x50 – an outstanding effort.

As the teams began to gel, it was clear that any team could win on any given day. Carlingford set the pace in being top or equal top until Round 8 when North Ryde RSL took over and were never headed. The catalyst for their strong run of form was a rare outright win against West Ryde Rovers in Round 7, where the target was 117 off 10 overs and they romped home as Matt Gardner made a barnstorming 68*. Other notable performances were:

 Round 4 – SinanFazlilar 102*, KelGray 81, Dan Gorman 5/51, Matt Kennedy 7/22 (including a hat-trick)

 Round 5 – Tim Cover 102*, Duncan Wilson 5/60 (as he decimated North Ryde RSL to give Vikings the upset win), Steve Holland 5/48 and 4/36 (as Rydalmere nearly achieved the outright against West Ryde)

 Round 6 – Mark Anderson 90*, James Somerset 82, Ben Dobson 81*. In an amazing game, Jai Shankar (100) and Nicholas Blyth (90) set up West Ryde with a score of 291 only to have Carlingford reel them in with a balanced batting effort in 55 overs

 Round 7 – Tim Cover 100*, Ross Yabsley 5/35 (to set up a nailbiter where YMCA rode a 40-run last-wicket partnership to get home against Rydalmere)

 Round 8 (1D) – In another extraordinary game, Carlingford posted 213 in their 35 overs only to see Cameron Rawding go berserk (130 of 184 when dismissed) and Rydalmere run them down in just 29 overs

 Rounds 9-12 (1D) – Alex Blanchard 84, Tim Cover 80*, Dale Arnott 5/28

 Round 13 was a washout both weeks

 Round 14 – Alex Blanchard 99, Kirk Saunders 91, 7/28 and 3/22 (as West Ryde again hung on), Ash Flint 114, Brock Heydon 5/23

At the end of Round 15 (where nothing notable occurred) the semi-finals were set – as a repeat of last year with North Ryde RSL (72 pts) vs Epping YMCA (41) at ELS Hall and Rydalmere (57) vs Carlingford (54) at Eastwood.

Semi-finals

In the first game, North Ryde RSL won the toss and sent Epping YMCA in despite good batting conditions, reasoning that the pitch was only going to get better. Epping got off to a good start, with some patient batting and selective shot-making to post an opening stand of 49. The bowlers were working hard and it took a bowling change to pick up the second at 71, the always-dangerous Tom McMurtry, caught on the long-on boundary. Epping continued in a steady vein, compiling runs with relative ease although at 4/118 the innings was in the balance. Kirk Saunders and SinanFazlilar then put on a 51-run partnership to take control when the competition’s leading wicket-taker struck – Dan Gorman (34 for the year) took 3/1 to stun the YMCA, who were soon 8/175 but managed to reach 204. North Ryde RSL didn’t help their cause by missing a number of chances – perhaps the pre-match Bin Lid routine will have to be tweaked next year.

17

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FIRST GRADE…..Premiers: North Ryde RSL cont.

The RSL went into bat with a few overs to face on Day 1. In the last over, the YMCA skipper brought on his leggie, which one of his players queried at the time. “He might do something stupid” was the reply. The North Ryde skipper thought to himself “Sure, I play the odd rash shot, but I’m not THAT stupid”. Four balls later, history said differently, the Y were celebrating and it was game on at 1/18 overnight. Day 2 saw steady progress being made, much like Day 1, as the pitch remained true. At 3/46 it was again in the balance but KelGray played a composed innings of 32 before falling at 4/108. At the other end, Mark Anderson was compiling runs quietly as he had done all season. When joined by his partner in crime Ben Dobson, that – unfortunately for Epping – was that. They put on a hundred partnership and North Ryde RSL passed the total four down, with Anderson sportingly allowed to get his hundred (103*) and Dobson chipping in 34*, finishing at 4/223.

In the other game, Carlingford won the toss, had a look at the flat, straw-coloured pitch and 32 degree temperatures, decided things looked good and went in to bat. Four overs later at 3/6, with Steve Holland playing wrecking ball (3/0 at that stage), they weren’t looking so good. David Heath and Tim Cover launched a rescue mission which was going well until another mini-collapse left them at 6/64 and Rydalmere in the box seat (Holland on fire with 5 wickets already, finishing with 5/44). With the competitions two leading run scorers dismissed cheaply, Carlingford set out to salvage a defendable total, led by Heath who made a backs-to-the-wall 64 to give Carlingford some hope as they reached 125.

Early wickets were the order of the day for Carlingford and they had a glimmer of hope as they struck for a second time with 33 on the board. However, Cameron Rawding (59) saw off the new ball and then unloaded as the bowlers tired, continuing his one-man nightmare for Carlingford’s bowlers at Eastwood. He was assisted by a smooth 32 from Harpreet Singh and when the 3rd wicket fell at 99, the fat lady was warming up. At 4/108 Carlingford needed a miracle, but instead Brock Heydon (50) launched a brutal attack, batting for 10 overs and clearing the boundary 5 times. Rydalmere were 6/179 when Carlingford conceded the game at stumps on day 1, making it 5 straight Grand Finals for the Wrens and a rematch of last year.

Grand Final

A perfect day for cricket greeted the combatants, who are no strangers to each other at the business end of the year, meeting in 4 of the last 5 seasons if memory serves correctly. The pitch was similar to a week earlier and again the North Ryde RSL skipper called correctly and sent the opposition in. This paid early dividends as Rydalmere fell to 3/19, with Dan Gorman picking up the top three in an important spell. Harpreet Singh then played some nice shots, looking largely untroubled and ticking the scoreboard over. Brock Heydon was struggling for rhythm at the other end, but dug in and the pair took the score to 71 before three more quick wickets put Rydalmere on the back foot.

A mistimed drive, a LBW and a quick yorker from Martin Rudelle-Greig and the score was 6/76. Ash Flint seemed somewhat distracted at the crease (was it MRG’s aftershave? Bad breath? Body odour? We’ll never know.) but he is always a handful down the order. North Ryde called for their secret weapon in Matt Gardner (aka Goldenarm) and after having him dropped in the deep, Matt got his man soon after and With Kel Gray ripping through the lower order, Rydalmere were teetering at 9/111. Enter Matt Kennedy with some no-nonsense hitting to make a quickfire 30 and cause a few concerns before holing out with the score on 145 off 42 overs. Certainly this was below-par for the conditions and North Ryde were fortunate that their missed chances did not end up costing too many runs. Nonetheless, small totals can prove difficult to chase and fatigue can be a factor for the batsmen in the latter part of the day.

North Ryde started confidently, weathering the early storm with Clive Cachia hitting some nice boundaries and yours truly playing a more subdued role. With the first drinks break in sight, the first wicket went down at 37, quickly followed by the second at 44 and Rydalmere had their tails up. North Ryde knuckled down, as Clive continued on his way whilst John Kosmidis looked solid at the other end, taking North Ryde to stumps without further setbacks at 2/84.

Sunday was again a glorious day for cricket and it was all to play for. The day’s play could not have been more anticipated – Rydalmere relishing the chance to throw everything they had at the opposition to get early wickets and maybe induce the staggers and North Ryde looking to add the cherry on top of the season by resisting the onslaught and becoming the champs by beating the champs. Alas, some oxygen thief didn’t agree and vandalised the pitch overnight such that it was unfit for play. Words fail me.

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FIRST GRADE…..Premiers: North Ryde RSL cont.

Finally I would like to thank all those involved in organising the season, from the NDCA to the umpires and groundsmen and everyone in between. This is a top-notch competition and a pleasure to play in. I would also like to mention that it is great to see Daniel Boyd (mentioned in this space last year) back on the cricket field and destroying batting orders. He took 32 wickets in just 9 games, with 5/19 in his comeback match in 5th Grade. I think I speak for all First Grade batsmen when I say “Take your time climbing the grades Boydy!!”.

Until next year,

Luke Macnab North Ryde RSL

SECOND GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere

The 2009/2010 2nd Grade competition was an enjoyable one providing competitive cricket right throughout the season.

The teams competing for premiership glory were Rydalmere, The Vikings, West Ryde, North Ryde, Meadowbank and Epping.

The season got off to a good start with the weather providing for uninterrupted play in the first round. Rydalmere accounted for a new look North Ryde side and West Ryde defeated Meadowbank. The third match saw The Vikings beaten by Epping.

So the season continued and by the end of Round 5 Rydalmere had opened up a lead on the rest of the teams with North Ryde, Epping and West Ryde lurking dangerously just behind. This pattern pretty much stayed the same for the rest of the competition and by the end of Round 15 the final four teams in order were:

Some outstanding performances throughout the regular season were:

In the first semi-final between West Ryde and Rydalmere at Marsfield, West Ryde batted first and after losing a couple of quick wickets battled away to end up with a handy total of 211 runs with about half an hour left to play on day one. Nick Fairbairn was the standout for West Ryde scoring a well-made 89. M Ashley also batted well for his 32. The pick of the bowlers for Rydalmere were Scott (3/59) and Ricky Palmer (3/51) who took 3 wickets each. Shane Fegan also bowled well taking the break through wicket of Ashley. Shane finished with 2 for 27 off 11 overs. Rydalmere openers Tony D’Amore and Steve Aquel were able to see out the final session to have their team none for about 10 at stumps.

The next day saw Rydalmere lose a couple of quick wickets and the match was in the balance at 3 for 49. Aman Kashyap and Ricky Palmer came together to form a handy 42 run 4th wicket partnership. However when Aman was run out, Rydalmere was still under pressure at 4 for 91. Scott came in next and together with Ricky looked dangerous. When Rick fell for a well-made 60 runs, the score was 5 for 135 and West Ryde still had a chance to push for victory. Unfortunately for them next man in, Darren Falla, had other ideas. Scott and Darren batted delightfully to form an unbeaten 80 run partnership which got Rydalmere home 5 wickets down. Scott finished with 50 NO at Darren 35 NO. The pick of the bowlers for West Ryde were Chris Rickets and Nick Fairbairn who finished with 2 wickets each.

The other semi-final was played at Meadowbank 10 between North Ryde and Epping. North Ryde batted first to be bowled out for 170 runs. The best with the bat were S Roberts (30), B Lincoln (27) and R Yule (25). R Cabot starred with the ball for Epping, taking 4 for 28. A Evans also performed well, taking 2 wickets. In reply Epping were able to get the runs 8 wickets down. R Cabot capped off a strong game with 36 runs for Epping, S Siva also chipped in with a crucial 36. So it was to be Epping vs Rydalmere in the Grand final.

Unfortunately for Epping Rydalmere kept their most dominant game of the year to the Grand Final. The Wrens were thrown into bat and scored a massive 362, finally being dismissed at 3-30pm on day 2. Scott Palmer scored his maiden 2nd grade tonne just at the right time (121), supported by Rick Palmer 70, Michael Andrich 39, and Aman Kasyap 25. Best of the Bowlers was R Cabot with 3 for 75, Healey and Brown took 2 each as well.

The Wrens thank the Epping Y boys for a competitive season. Whilst they were forced to chase a lot of leather in the grand final, they never gave up and tried to slog the runs at the death, being rolled for 73. Ricky Palmer (6/32) and Darren Falla (2/16) were the pick of the bowlers.

THE SENIOR COMPETITION SECOND GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere cont.

The Rydalmere team would also like to thank all the other 2nd Grade teams for a great season. We’d also like to thank the NDCA Executive and all umpires for their organisation and officiating throughout.

21

THE SENIOR COMPETITION THIRD GRADE…..Premiers: North Ryde RSL

The 2009/2010 3rd grade competition was an enjoyable one, providing competitive cricket throughout the season. The teams competing for premiership glory were Rydalmere, West Ryde Rovers, Epping YMCA, Carlingford Waratahs and two sides from North Ryde RSL. At the end it was the North Ryde Gold side that came from 3rd place after the regular season overcoming Rydalmere and the North Ryde Blue side in the finals series. Either one of these final opponents would have been deserving champions and a testament to the competitive and well balanced nature of the competition.

From the outset the competition was separated into two groups, North Ryde Blue and Rydalmere swapping places all through the year for the minor premiership and West Ryde, Epping YMCA, Carlingford and North Ryde Gold fighting out for the other two spots to be in contention at the business end of the season. Unfortunately Carlingford had a few early injuries to key players which left them short personnel, but were able to blood a lot of young players in a team that was predominately made up of fathers and sons – I am sure with this experience next season they will be right in the mix. Epping YMCA was the other unlucky side missing out on the finals by just 8 points, games were always competitive and like all games throughout the grade, played in the right spirit. I’d like to mention our round 11 one day match against YMCA, we were set 182 for the win and going along nicely needing about 40 runs off 17 overs with 8 wickets in hand before a massive storm rolled in. As the game needed to be finished by 6pm due to the rain interruption we only had about 15 minutes left when we headed back out. The ground was still a bit wet but YMCA made no issues with taking the field, they could of gone out and used their opening bowlers off the long run and bowled us 2 or 3 overs which would of most likely ended the game in a draw but believing that we were the better side that day bowled a couple of their part- time bowlers off a couple of steps which allowed us to get over the line. The fact that this game allowed us to jump YMCA into 4th spot pushing them down into 5th says a lot about their character lead by captain Andrew Maddocks and the spirit in which way they played their cricket. This goes for all 6 teams in the 3rd grade competition, it was great that all the sides played hard but everyone was fair.

Semi-Finals

In the first semi final it was Cam Gordon’s North Ryde Blue to face off against West Ryde. Cam won the toss and sent West Ryde in, they were going along well at 1/66 before Toby Newton-McGee showed his class taking 5/23 off 13 overs and North Ryde was set 127 for the chance to add to the minor premiership the following week. J. Hutchinson played a captains knock scoring 51 at the top of the order. In what turned out to be a close match North Ryde Blue were 6/100 with Jason Poutawa top scoring with 38 and S. Trickett 27 before Cam Gordon and the ever reliable Daniel Buttrey got them over the line with 14* and 8* respectively. P. Small was the pick of the bowlers with 2/25 off 13.

In the second semi-final, James Poulos’ Rydalmere faced off against Michael Jeffery’s North Ryde Gold side. The sides had played 3 times previously, all games were won by more than 100 runs, with Rydalmere winning the first two matches and North Ryde Gold the last encounter. Rydalmere had a very strong batting line up having 4 of the top 7 runs scorers for the year in their side (T. Dunwell, J. Poulos, E. Hope, J. Hamilton) plus Q. Shamal who we had seen firsthand smashing 94* against us in an earlier game, averaging just below 50 for the season. We were without our best bowler for the semi due to injury and knew we would have to be at our best, hold our catches and have a bit of luck to get a win here. James won the toss and as they had done all year elected to bat first on a stinking hot day. We were lucky enough to get some early wickets and had Rydalmere 8/39 in the 18th over. Ben Onorato and Michael Jeffery bowled 14 straight each picking up 3-18 and 5-35 respectively. Ben Lyons and Dom Hanson both took a wicket from an over each and we were left to chase 62 to have a crack at the title next week. Mat Tilley and LochyDowne lead us off with the bat passing the

23

THE SENIOR COMPETITION THIRD GRADE…..Premiers: North Ryde RSL cont. total in the 20th over and batting on to make a 133 run opening stand. Downe showed a lot of grit and determination to bat 45 overs for his 20 runs, Tilley eventually dismissed for 115 in the 50th over. To Rydalmere’s credit they kept fighting, having us 3/161 we were very quickly 7/173 but then at tea the captains agreed to finish the game. Dunwell, Shamal and Poulos were all unlucky with catches going down off all their bowling, Paul Vanderlight bowled great carrying a hand injury to finish with 4/40 off 19 overs. Both sides had loads of talent in their side but it was the North Ryde Gold side that was lucky enough to get over the line this time.

Grand Final

And so it was the minor premiers North Ryde Blue to play against North Ryde Gold for the most important silverware, or the baggy blue caps that everyone wanted. Although the Gold side had gotten over the Blues 3 out of 3 throughout the season, they were worthy minor premiers and with class of the likes of Toby Newton-McGee, Cameron Gordon and Jason ‘the freak’ Poutawa in their side not to mention the clubs highest run scorer Scott Martin with over 8000 runs for the club – all match winners in their own right, knew we needed to be at our best to get over them in the big one.

Cam won the toss (again) and sent us in (again). We got off to a good start being 0/32 after 11 overs before Jason struck twice in successive balls getting both openers Tilley (17) and Hanson (23). Next over Toby got two in successive balls and we were 4/37 in the 13th over. We chipped away but just couldn’t get a partnership going and in the end could only set 98 as the total. Michael Jeffery top scored with 24 and a very gutsy 12 from Ben Onorato surviving 15 overs with the tail before holing out. All the Blues bowlers were great, Jason Powtawa ended with 3/39 off 16 overs, Toby Newton- McGee 3/33 off 10 and Cam ‘can bowl to the tail’ Gordon ended with 4/5 off 5.1 overs.

With only 98 on the board we knew we were going to need to bowl and field at our best if we were going to have any chance, we were helped with the return of our spearhead Nathanial Doust who got a wicket in the first over and off to the perfect start. The game was slow going early before Doust struck with the second wicket leaving the Blues 2/9 after 11 overs. We had a sniff but with Poutawa and Newton-MeGee at the crease and Martin and Gordon yet to bat we knew we were still by far the outsiders. Benny Onorato got Toby out in with a ball that rolled back onto the stumps in a slightly unlucky fashion and when we got Scott Martin LBW for 17 before the end of day one we were in with a chance. At stumps on day 1 the game was well and truly in the balance with the Blues 7/60 chasing 99 for the premiership. We knew while Cam was at the crease they were probably going to get the runs, and we were lucky on the morning of the 2nd day to get him out early and had the Blues 9/65. Paul Rice and Gus Trickett put up a solid fight for the last wicket stand but we eventually got them out for 82, winning the first innings. Doust and Lyons were the pick of the bowlers with 4/33 off 18 and 3/7 off 7 respectively with both Onorato and Hanson picking up key wickets late on day 1.

As we were only an hour into the 2nd day the Blues put us in again and straight away we were in trouble at 2/5 off 3 overs. We got to 47 before we lost another wicket but then lost another 2 without scoring and another at 57 and then before we knew it were 7/77 with two hours left in the day and staring at the very big possibility of having to go back out in the field. We were lucky that Doust and Lyons form with the ball continued with the bat and scored 31* and 19* respectively to see the Gold’s at 7/113. At 5pm on day two the Blues saw the writing on the wall and the captains agreed we were done for the year and the celebrations began.

The majority of players in the North Ryde Gold side hadn’t played cricket for at least 5 years, some hadn’t ever played Saturday cricket at all and this showed with the side winless going into round 5. We did have a draw in round 2 against the Carlingford side but we were chasing 287 to win so maybe the rain was our friend that day. We recovered from our shaky start to win our last 7 games straight (5 competition rounds & 2 finals) on our way to taking out the premiership.

It was tough for the club having two sides in the same grade with both sides being so competitive and short of numbers, most weeks not knowing till Saturday morning how many we would have. We would like to thank the North Ryde Blue side, they were tough opponents all year and made the mid-week training sessions before an all North Ryde clash quite interesting to say the least with the competitive spirits of individuals.

I would like to thank all the opposing captains and their teams on what has been a very enjoyable season of cricket. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the NDCA Executive and its umpires for organising and officiating during the season, you do a wonderful job and it is appreciated by all teams.

Michael Jeffery North Ryde RSL Gold Captain.

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FOURTH GRADE…..Premiers: West Ryde Rovers

The Fourth Grade 2009/10 season was condensed with eleven competitive teams. Ultimately, West Ryde Rovers, the minor premiers, won the premiership. The following table details the statistics of each team prior to the finals:

Rank Team M W2 W1 D L1 L2Points 1 West Ryde Rovers 14 1 8 3 2 0 66 2 Carlingford Waratah Blue 14 2 6 2 4 0 64 3 Carlingford Waratah White 13 1 7 2 3 0 59 4 North Ryde RSL 14 0 8 2 4 0 56 5 Rydalmere Mo’s 14 0 8 1 5 0 55 6 Carlingford Waratah Red 14 0 7 2 4 1 49 7 Vikings 14 0 7 1 5 1 49 8 Rydalmere Maroon 13 0 4 1 8 0 34 9 Epping YMCA Red 13 0 4 0 9 0 33 10 Rydalmere Sky Blue 13 0 2 1 9 1 23 11 Epping YMCA Blue 14 0 2 1 10 1 24 Note: The rankings are based on the ‘points per game’ ratio.

The competition displayed an outstanding batting performance from DhruvNayyar who led the batting aggregate with 676 runs. Furthermore, Dylan Dharmadasa, Adrian Jayendra, Hannibal Singh, Aviv Pudipeddi and Darren Falla each scored centuries.

In regards to bowling, David Herlihy and ArjunBhaskaran headed the wickets tally with 33 wickets. Five wicket hauls were taken by ArjunBhaskaran, David Herlihy, GajManamperi, Maria Harrison, Rami Ferris, DilulcaSenarath, Daman Bhatia, Sahir Syed, RajeevanYoganathan, Karan Rao, IshitTrivedi, Darren Falla, Martin Lunney, Arghya Gupta, Nicholas Birrell, Matt Maittlen, Raj Kumar, Dylan Dharmadasa, Luke Jones, Ijaz Aziz, PraveenanSivabalan, Kamal Sattar, PavanPrabhala and Jay Tammareddy.

Ultimately, two players stood out in terms of all round performance. Firstly, Darren Falla with 324 runs and 23 wickets was excellent in his contribution to Rydalmere. However, the Man of the Competition was clearly RajeevanYoganathan of West Ryde Rovers – 25 wickets at 10.64 and 408 runs at 34. Such an all-round performance would place him alongside the greats such as Imran Khan, KapilDev, Ian Botham and Sir Garfield Sobers.

The details of each team will not be discussed due to the considerable number of teams competing this season.

Semi-final: West Ryde Rovers versus North Ryde RSL

West Ryde Rovers were sent into bat after having lost the toss at George Kendall Park. The openers ManushaSamaraweera and AdityaRayaprolu got the Rovers off to a good start with a 43 run partnership, however failed to capitalise. Similarly, NavdeepMadan, DhruvNayyar and Jay Tammareddy all made double figures without converting them into large scores. This was largely due to great bowling by Matt Maittlen, who took the wickets of the top three batsmen. However, at 4/126, Rajeevan (‘Jeeves’) Yoganathan was up to the challenge of rescuing the Rovers. He and SudeepDesaraju added a 50 run partnership to set up a solid total of 202. Jeeves ended up with 67 runs and was out for handling the ball – the only way he was likely to get out. Jason Reay and George Scapellato were also outstanding with the ball claiming two wickets each.

The chase for North Ryde RSL started off disastrously, losing Michael Nicol on the second ball to Daman Bhatia. Although resistance was offered from B Russell, who scored 33, and R Maittlen, who scored 23, they were dominated by the Rovers. RajeevanYoganathan and Kamal Sattar in a strong bowling partnership were responsible for the destruction of the North Ryde RSL middle order crumbling from 4/94 to 7/97. However, Daman Bhatia was the pick of the bowlers having finished off with the figures of 4/44 off 18 overs.

Semi-final: Carlingford Waratah Blue versus Carlingford Waratah White

The Carlingford Waratah (‘CW’) Blue and Carlingford Waratah White teams met at Pidding Park in what was to be a low- scoring thriller. CW Blue had made a great come back towards the end of the season having won multiple victories in a row to make the semi-finals.

26

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FOURTH GRADE…..Premiers: West Ryde Rovers cont.

CW White was sent into bat by CW Blue and without Diluk Kannangara and Praveen Sivabalan, their batting line up appeared weak. Despite this, Rami Ferris and Dasun Abeygoonawardana stepped up and scored 27 and 26 respectively. However, with no one carrying on to make a large score, CW White collapsed to be all out for 103 in 27 overs. Arghya Gupta was outstanding with the ball having figures of 6/27 off 8 overs.

Having such a low score to defend did not demoralise CW White as they fought hard to be placed in the Grand Final. At one stage, they were clear favourites with CW Blue collapsing to 9/63 – Rami Ferris claiming five wickets. However, Adrian Jayendra counter attacked (after having been dropped) to take them to an amazing comeback victory. An innings Michael Bevan would have been proud of; he finished off with 71 runs.

Grand-final: West Ryde Rovers versus Carlingford Waratah Blue

West Ryde Rovers met Carlingford Waratah Blue at Cox Park for the Grand Final. Having won the toss, CW Blue was put into bat first and was dominated. CW Blue was all out for 92, with Gaj Manamperi being the only major contributor with 31 runs. Daman Bhatia had the figures of 3/19, David Emmanuel with 2/18, Rajeevan Yoganathan with 2/17, Kamal Sattar with 2/30 and Aditya Rayaprolu with 1/6.

Despite their strong batting line up, West Ryde Rovers in their innings collapsed to 3/9 and this Grand Final was set up to be another low scoring thriller. The dangerous number three batsman, DhruvNayyar, was cleaned up by Sahir Syed for his first duck of the season. However, Navdeep ‘Brian Lara’ Madan played an innings of a lifetime and scored 75 runs to give West Ryde Rovers a deserved victory. The innings included many sixes and even included a reverse pull shot for a one bounce four. Ultimately, Sudeep Desaraju grabbed the opportunity with both hands to score the winning runs. Aba Balakrishnan, the best wicket keeper of the competition, added another not out to his statistics.

However, this game was not over as CW Blue attempted to win on second innings. Soon CW Blue’s dreams on winning the premiership vanished as they fell to a slow 7/124. West Ryde Rovers showed their dominance and scored 2/82 off 11 overs to win the Grand Final outright.

Left to Right (Top): A. Rayaprolu, D. Bhatia, J. Tammareddy, R. Yoganathan, N. Madan, S. Desaraju and K. Sattar. Left to Right (Bottom): M. Samaraweera, D. Nayyar, D. Emmanuel and A. Balakrishnan Out of Shot: J. Tammareddy (Captain, West Ryde Rovers)

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FIFTH GRADE…..Premiers: Vikings cont.

Epping Andrew Alice – 427 runs at 35 which included 3 fifties with highest score 87, Cameron Dunn 204 runs at 68 which included 1 century with highest score 171, Simon Harburg – 25 wickets at 18 with best figures 5/14, Jack Sou – 23 wickets at 23 with best figures 3/26.The season got underway and the early leaders of the comp after round 5 were Rydalmere Maroon followed by Vikings Red, Vikings Blue and Rydalmere Sky Blue with all four teams registering outright wins. North Ryde were not too far behind.

As the season progressed Vikings Blue kicked away on the ladder with their strong bowling attack of Boydie, Baz, Rob, Reardo & Ron and they were the eventual minor premiers. Two other battles developed during the remainder of the season. The first was between us and Rydalmere Maroon for 2nd and 3rd spot and the other was between North Ryde and Rydalmere Sky Blue for 4th spot.

An outright win in Round 14 for us against West Ryde ensured us 2nd position on the ladder. Daniel Mion ripped through their top order with 5/14 in their first innings and Phil Azize made 70.

4th Spot was still up for grabs going into the last round. Two important games were being played. North Ryde were playing Rydalmere Maroon and a win for North Ryde would see them maintain 4th spot. In the other game Rydalmere Sky Blue were playing us. If Rydalmere Sky Blue defeated us and North Ryde lost then they would grab 4th Spot. As it turned out Rydalmere Sky Blue did defeat us (not an ideal preparation for us going into the finals). We didn’t score enough runs and a good partnership from Harry Rao and Matthew Goodenough saw them home, however North Ryde also defeated Rydalmere Maroon. As such the semi finals draw was decided and Vikings Blue (1) would play North Ryde (4) and the other semi would be between us (2) and Rydalmere Maroon (3).

Semi Finals

Vikings Blue V North Ryde The first semi final was played between Vikings Blue and North Ryde at Upjohn. They had played each other twice during the season and Vikings Blue had won both games.

North Ryde won the toss and batted first and were soon in early trouble with the score being 3/19 which included their best bat Geoff Cordner. Ben Bury and their keeper Shane Miller steadied the ship. Miller went on to top score with 63. North Ryde were eventually all out in their first inning for 128. Daniel Boyd took 5/16 off 12 overs and Barry Whitehead took 3/31. At stumps on the first day Vikings Blue were 1/48 and would have been feeling confident. An early wicket fell on day 2 and Vikings Blue were 2/51. Regular wickets continued including the prized scalps of Vikram Craig (38) and Barry Whitehead. Vikings Blue were all out for 95 and North Ryde took 1st innings. Ben Bury took 4/23 and Geoff Cordner took 3/8 off 11 overs. The game was not over just yet as Vikings Blue captain Jeremey Atkinson sent North Ryde back in. North Ryde were then in deep trouble early with the score at 5/15 which then became 6/34, However Geoff and Tim Cordner batted well to see out the rest of play and were now through to the Grand Final. Daniel Boyd took 4/11 off 12 overs in the 2nd innings.

Vikings Red V Rydalmere Maroon The second semi final was played between us and Rydalmere Maroon at Cheltenham Oval. We had played each other twice during the regular season. The first game was a draw after they amassed 7/377 and we finished on 4/122. They seemed to have great depth with their batting and three of their batsmen scored fifties that day. They also had a decent bowling line up with pace bowling and accurate spinners (for 5th grade). The other time we played them was washed out.

Given we had finished 2nd on the ladder and we were playing the team who finished 3rd, the plan was to bat first for a long as we could and take advantage of our batting depth. Luckily I won the toss. We opened with Zach & Leo. Leo was our wild card as he liked to talk to the opposition bowlers and fielders and would often put them off them game. He soon had their opening bowler, Big Bird taking the bait. Leo and Zach put on 20 for the 1st wicket until Leo was caught behind to a one handed screamer by their keeper, Gollakota. Chris came in at number 3 and was looking good until he was caught

29

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FIFTH GRADE…..Premiers: Vikings cont. behind. Zach followed soon after and we were 3/68. The middle order needed to consolidate, Phil and Anthony put on 30 runs before Anthony was dismissed clean bowled by their impressive left arm spinner Wilfred. The skipper and Phil put on a 60 run partnership before I was out to a sharp catch at gully off their opening bowler. We reached 6/199 at stumps on the 1st day with Phil unbeaten on 56 and Michael 14. I would say honours went to us on the first day.

The first hour or so on the 2nd day was important. If Rydalmere took the remaining 4 wickets cheaply then they were back in the game. The next day, however Michael played his shots and made an important 60 runs for us and we were then 7/255 with Phil doing a great job at the other end. We were soon 8 down when Tony came to the crease and he played shots all around the ground. Phil at this stage had been out in the middle for approx 5 hours and it was looking like Tony might actually beat him to his century. Unfortunately Tony was dismissed just short of his century for 97. Tony’s wife Rose was at the ground today and unlike my wife she brought good luck to Tony and Michael. We will have to make sure she comes to the games more often. Phil ended up on 111 no. and together they put on 150 for the 9th wicket. We were eventually dismissed just after tea for 412 ! Rydalmere had now been in the field for over a day and a half and whilst they were tired, they still maintained attacking fields and didn’t stop trying. Rydalmere were also without their opening bowler Venkat for the semi who unfortunately broke his ankle during the week, however he was certainly there to cheer his team on!

The equation was 413 runs to win off less than 2 hours and to Rydalmere’s credit they did come out to bat swinging and at 6/86 they had had enough and the game was called. Unfortunately Leo was on a hat trick at the time.

We were then through to the Grand Final

Grand Final

Vikings Red V North Ryde North Ryde’s line up was very similar to us in that they had a lot of young juniors and a number of older players which included quite a few father & son combinations.

As we had finished 2nd of the ladder and North Ryde finished 4th, the plan was to again bat for as long as we could with our batting depth. The toss was going to be a very important one to win as both teams wanted to bat first. I had won 4 tosses in a row at this stage and was due for a loss. Luckily I won the toss and we batted first.

Martin and Zach opened the batting for us. Martin played a lovely shot down the ground (in front of the wicket) and even looked up to his team mates to see if they were watching. Don’t worry Martin – I saw it and it was good shot! Unfortunately he was bowled a few balls later by their young opening bowler Ben Bury and we were 1/7. North Ryde had their tails up. The was slightly changed to allow Brendan Ashcroft to come in at No. 3 as he had to leave early. Brendan was looking good until he was given out LBW to their skipper Geoff Cordner, the 1st of four LBWs in our innings. We were then 2/30. Enter Phil Azize, the man who had scored an unbeaten century in the semi final. Could he do it again? Phil and Zach then set about building our innings and by stumps on the 1st day both were not out and had their half centuries. North Ryde’s bowlers of Ben Lopez, Ben Bury, Geoff Cordner, Tim Cordner and Mat and Mike Furness toiled hard all day, however the immense concentration of our two boys was amazing to watch from the side line. There wasn’t a lot of boundaries hit due to good tight bowling, however they ran the ones and twos well and they didn’t give any chances. Our score over night was 2/183.

Again the first hour or so was important. If North Ryde took a few early wickets they would have their tails up. Zach and Phil batted on and lifted the tempo. Our score was 232 when Zach was dismissed bowled by Geoff Cordner for 80. He was out in the middle for approx 6 hours and showed enormous concentration for a 14 year old. They also had a partnership of 202 runs! Chris was next in after waiting for about 5 hours to bat unfortunately was out shortly after LBW to their skipper Cordner. Phil then brought up his second consecutive century, another amazingly patient innings. The skipper was next to go given out LBW again to that man Cordner. Anthony was out shortly after playing on.

30

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FIFTH GRADE…..Premiers: Vikings cont.

With our score on 282, Dave was given out LBW, the fourth one of our innings and Michael was off the bowling of Mat Furness. North Ryde had made a comeback with the ball thanks to the amazing figures of 7/26 off 20 overs by their skipper Geoff Cordner. Still we had huge score on the board for a Grand Final and were all finally out at tea on the 2nd day for 311 with Phil 124 not out.

During the tea break, North Ryde had a team talk and decided they would not come out to bat. They had their reasons and we respect their decision.

The Premiership was now ours !

The Vikings Red would like to thank North Ryde for their effort in the Grand Final and we wish them well for next season. I would also to acknowledge the other opposing captains and their teams on what has been a very enjoyable season with some great cricket being played and will look forward to doing battle again next season. We would also like to thank the NDCA committee for the all the hard work they do behind the scenes in running the competition to ensure we get to play cricket each week.

I would like to congratulate our 4 juniors from St Patrick’s – Michael O’Beid, Daniel Mion, Zac Quintal and Anthony Azize – for their contribution to our success. At various times during the season they were top scorers, had the best bowling figures or taken wonderful catches. They played morning comp and backed up for the Vikings in the afternoon and when us older players needed a rest they would come onto bowl (invariably up the hill or into the wind) , chase every ball and bat high in the order. It was great having them as key contributors to our success.

Special thanks to our families and other Viking players who came along to support us over the finals

THE JUNIOR COMPETITION THE JUNIOR COMPETITION ANNUAL REPORT

Season 2009/2010 was a big season in many ways. The Junior competition grew to 75 teams competing in the regular competition and with the addition of an Under 9 competition and an upgraded Under 10 competition saw a total of 1,088 boys and girls playing cricket on a Saturday. Again I was ably assisted by Tony Matson and Craig Menzies. We also had Greg Berriman, Steve O’Donnell and Mark Tyler as our Executive.

The season saw the introduction of the MyCricket website. Changing to this was a huge amount of work at the beginning of the season for all clubs however it was a highly successful website which enabled all teams to input scores, manage communication and track their progress during the season. We have found this to be a great communication tool for our Association, especially when we needed to advise the state of play due to the weather forecast.

Our monthly meetings were well attended and all club delegates were well informed. We had guest speakers from the Sydney Morning Winter Association encouraging everyone to continue playing during the off season. I believe that a few players have enjoyed the extra play during the winter.

Once again we ran the Level 1 coaching course. We encourage all coaches and managers to complete this course. I am sure it will not be too far away when we will only be able to have accredited coaches assisting our players. We are looking forward to running the Coaching and Umpiring courses again before the next season gets underway to help give our volunteers as much knowledge as possible.

We held Semi finals in the Under 12 and Under 16 competitions held over two weekends using neutral umpires. Grand final matches were held over the weekend of the 13th and 14th March. All nine games were played in fantastic spirit and produced some great results. 8 clubs were represented in these grand finals which is a testament to the quality and standard of all the competitions. Well done to all teams for making it to the final and doing your club proud.

NDCA fielded six teams in the Inter Association competition for five weeks in October/November. All teams played some very competitive cricket and certainly showed some of the more fancied teams that NDs are not the push over they once might have been. Thanks go to all the Level 1 coaches who gave their time and knowledge to these young men. They have certainly become better cricketers for the experience. Thanks also need to go to the dedicated parents who drive all over Sydney and beyond to help their sons represent our association.

This season saw two teams from West Ryde Rovers enter in the Northern Sydney girl’s competition with the C grade team winning the completion for the 2nd year running. We were thrilled to have Georgia McPherson play for NSGCA representative team in the Mollie Dive Cup. Girl’s cricket will be the focus for many clubs within NDCA in the coming season as I believe Carlingford Waratah and Epping District are keen to field a girl’s team which is fantastic.

Following the rep season we had a number of boys try out for the Emerging blues squad in their respective ages and we are pleased to say that James Needham from Epping YMCA has been included in this year’s squad. Well done James.

We also had many young players compete in Green Shield for various teams over the Christmas break. Charlie Booth, Cameron Cleary, Liam Gibson, Ben O’Connell, Karl Stuart, Jock Wallace. It is fantastic to see these keen talented boys strive to further their cricket careers.

The Junior committee would like to thank John Crane and Jason LeGuier for support during the 2009/10 season.

I would also like to thank Tony Matson, who is retiring from the Junior committee this year. He has been a fantastic member of the executive. He has great minute taking skills, attention to detail and organization, but most of all he has been a wonderful support to me and I thank him for this. Given that our sons are the same age I am sure I will continue to spend some time with him on the sideline in the future.

Cricket within NDCA is still growing and we are committed to accommodating this growth. We are always looking at new ways to give every opportunity to all junior players within NDCA. We have many fantastic ideas for the coming season and are certainly looking forward to the challenge.

Meryl O’Connell, Chairperson, NDJCA

THE JUNIOR COMPETITION Outstanding Efforts Rewarded

During the season Cricket NSW held the annual Cricket NSW Metropolitan Volunteer of the Year Awards function. Five volunteers from across the Sydney North area joined another 25 carefully selected volunteers from across the Sydney Metropolitan area to celebrate another fantastic year of cricket. One of the Sydney North volunteers was our very own Meryl O’Connell (West Ryde Rovers, Secretary and NDJCA, Chairperson).

Of the five outstanding nominees from Sydney North, it was decided that Meryl O’Connell be recognised as the Sydney North Volunteer of the year. Meryl was presented with a signed and framed RTA Speedblitz Blues photo and cricket bat for her outstanding service to all things cricket in the Northern District Junior Cricket Association.

Each Sydney cricket region rewarded their Volunteer of the Year in a similar manner, leaving five Sydney metro winners.

To cap a wonderful evening, it was then announced to the delight of the crowd that Meryl O’Connell was selected as the overall Cricket NSW Sydney Metropolitan Ford Volunteer of the Year. An obviously surprised Meryl graciously accepted her award to great applause.

Congratulations to Meryl on behalf of not only her local Club and Association, but all volunteers in the Sydney Region for the outstanding recognition of her service to Junior Cricket.

Steve Mulally, Sydney North Cricket Manager, Cricket NSW

UNDER 16 – WATSON SHIELD

The Team: Todd Palmer (C), Nikill Senarativa (WK), Josh Raven, Luke Ireland, Aiden Clarke Hayden Rogers, Mitch Gerdes, Mitch Healy, Scott Walker, Nick Miller (Dundas) Kym Cheeseman (Gladesville), Jake McCarthy (YMCA)

Results:

Round 1 v Camden: Draw due to wet weather. Camden 3/72 after 28.3 Overs.

Round 2 v North Shore: Loss on first innings. North Shore 9/273, Northern Districts 6/253

Round 3 v Bankstown: Loss on first innings. Bankstown 5/200, Northern Districts 10/51

Round 4 v Illawarra: Loss on first innings. Northern Districts 4/213, Illawarra 6/217 (won in the last over)

Round 5 v Fairfield: Loss on first innings. Fairfield 10/217, Northern Districts 10/162

With a large amount of under 16 players walking away from junior cricket this season, it was touch and go if we would be able to form a Watson shield side in 2010. While try-out attendance was poor, we were able to call in some favours at the last minute from some of the Dundas United boys and hence were able to form a team.

The competition was always going to be a strong one but the boys proved they were up to the challenge. Although we didn’t win a game, we were well and truly in all of them. While we proved we could mix it with the best of them we just couldn’t keep the standard up for the full 120 overs.

On a whole our batting was pretty impressive this season as we scored above 200 on two out of four innings. Congratulations to Mitch Healy who had an excellent season at number 3 scoring a hundred and a fifty in dominant style. Mitch’s 127 not out against Illawarra was a brilliant attacking innings, his straight driving was outstanding. Other strong performers with the bat were NikillSenarativa and Kym Cheeseman, both scoring 50s as well. Mention should also be made to Nicholas Miller and Josh Raven who also batted well throughout the season. Hayden Rogers improved dramatically with the bat this season and I was very impressed with his application and effort. Our skipper Todd Palmer is also an excellent batsmen who looked good as well but unfortunately copped a couple of rough decisions but took it all in his stride, displaying outstanding sportsmanship at all times.

UNDER 15 – WEBLIN SHIELD

The Team: Anthony Azize (St Pats), Charlie Booth (WRR), Cameron Cleary (WRR), James Dunn (WRR), Chris Iaquinto (St Pats), Matthew Maittlen (WRR), Matthew Matson - captain (CWCC), Daniel Munro (WRR), Dylan Munro (WRR), Ben O’Connell (WRR), Karl Stuart (WRR), Jack Simpson (St Pats), Jock Wallace (CWCC).

After a couple of seasons of losing players to injury we went with thirteen players in the squad. Rotation proved difficult when we ended up with a bye in our draw. Wet weather also affected two other games. This season we welcomed four new players into the team – Anthony Azize, Chris Iaquinto, Karl Stuart and Jack Simpson, a specialist keeper.

Unfortunately we had a tough draw playing two of the four semi finalists during the season and eventual winner. If you add Parramatta for a trial match we played three of the four semi finalists during the season.

Whilst Jock Wallace was a member of the current season’s Emerging Blues squad, congratulations also goes to Karl Stuart who made the Emerging Blues squad for the next season.

Round 1 vs. Fairfield Liverpool (ELS Hall) Fairfield Liverpool 2/147 drew with NDCA

Our first rain affected game where the Dads got plenty of practice putting the covers on and off. Although we got an early wicket and the bowling was tight for the first twelve overs it was hard going thereafter. A spectacular caught & bowled by Chris Iaquinto got our second wicket but the rain settled in a few runs later probably putting us out of our misery.

Round 2 vs. Camden (Memorial Park) Camden 9/245defeated NDCA 86 and 9/187

Camden won the toss and batted first on a hot dry day. We had them 4/40 with the early damage being done by Matt Maittlen who finished with four wickets. Charlie Booth also bowled well to finish with three wickets. As has been the situation in past seasons we let one batsman get a big score and with only eleven fieldsmen had a long day in the field. Our batting was fairly ordinary with only Dylan Munro putting up some resistance with 27 runs. At about 5pm we thought we were in for an early finish but Camden arrogantly had other ideas and sent us back in. A swashbuckling 26 by Anthony Azize and 25 by Ben O’Connell saw us at 3/77 after 20 overs.

Round 3 vs. Newcastle (ELS Hall) Newcastle 6/139 defeated NDCA 9/136

Another rain affected game where after winning the toss and batting we were affected by the numerous stoppages in play. James Dunn was stumped at 21 after the ball rebounded off the keeper’s pad and Matt Matson made 36 running himself out near the end in an attempt to increase the run rate. With the weather looking like rain Newcastle chased for runs giving us a number of opportunities. Cam Cleary ended up with two wickets with most other bowlers contributing. However whilst Newcastle consistently lost wickets they also accumulated the runs to win the match.

Round 4 vs. Bye

Round 5 vs. Central Coast (Baker) Central Coast 207 defeated NDCA 143

We won the toss and elected to field on an extremely hot day. We were the first team to bowl Central Coast out and again one batsmen got on top of us. Cam Cleary picked up three wickets and Matt Maittlen two, however some fine bowling by Karl Stuart in his second spell saw him end up with 4/33 off 12 overs. When batting we lost two early wickets before Dylan Munro (30) and James Dunn (21) put on a good partnership. Daniel Munro batting down the order made 25 and Karl Stuart finished a good match with 24. Not a bad result against eventually competition winners.

UNDER 15 – WEBLIN SHIELD cont.

In summary, another tough season but part of the learning curve as Green Shield beckons a number of this team for next season. On paper the bowling attack looked good however some crucial dropped catches made the difference. In the batting not one batsman was able to put together even a 50 and essentially there lies a major problem at this level of competition.

Thanks to all the parents who supported the team during the season. In particular a number of parents did some scoring and as always afternoon tea was very pleasant.

UNDER 14 – MOORE SHIELD

The Team: Tom Collins, Ben French, Sam Lloyd, Geoff Wilson (West Ryde Rovers) Ian Hopkins, Max Yabsley (Gladesville RSL) Steve Maroun, Daniel Samsa (St Patricks) Tom Alice, Shashvat Sharma Sub (Epping District) Conor Rae (Ryde Hunters Hill), Bradley Watson (Carlingford), Luke Johnston (Holy Cross)

A difficult season with last years team loosing our emerging blue opening bowler Bruno with stress fractures in his back and also our wicket keeper and most successful bat Sam who decided that the lure of grade was too much. We also had a bye for the second year in a row so our season was limited especially after round 1 was washed out at morning tea.

Despite our poor results, as we did not win the three games we played, the season was an enjoyable one with some of the boys having good individual performances. The standard of the teams we did play was very high and water must be good in those areas as a number of the opponents were bigger and stronger than their coaches, bearing in mind the competition is under 14’s.

I must thank Paul Alice for his managerial skills and all the parents for supporting him with great afternoon teas and scoring duties. The boys were fortunate to have Mike West, Peter Blanchard and Tim Cover to help me with the coaching and it is hoped that the advice will improve their cricket as well as having fun.

Round 1: NDCA vs Penrith

Lost the toss and Penrith were 3 for 105 when rain decided that cricket was not to be played.

Round 2: NDCA vs ACT

Won the toss and could not bat the 60 overs and were dismissed for 137 . Conor with 34 and Luke with 27 the best performers. ACT made short work of the chase loosing only two wickets.

Round 3: Bye

Round 4: NDCA vs Illawarra

We knew we were in for a hard game as the previous match they had scored 3 for 380 against the ACT. Loosing the toss did not help and dropping 5 catches also added to the difficulty and we dismissed Illawarra for 309. I must say our boys stuck to the difficult task and made the opposition work hard with Steve being fantastic in the field stopping a lot of runs and taking a great catch. We were not up to the chase and were dismissed for 114 with Geoff making 44.

Round 5: NDCA vs North Shore

Again this was strong opposition as North Shore were equal first in their division with the winner of their division likely to be decided on quotients. With the temperature at 40 degrees Geoff did the right thing and won the toss , it was unfortunate that we could not use the hot conditions to our advantage being bundled out for 65 with Max top scoring with 16. North Shore went passed us the over before the lunch break and then surprisingly batted on rather than ask us to bat again. They batted on without much urgency and declared at 2 for 166. We then played our best cricket , “better late than never” with Ian and Steve making 82 for the opening stand Ian with 57 and Steve with 25 . We then lost three wickets very rapidly and may have still been under some pressure if Tom and Geoff had not had another good partnership. Geoff made North Shore pay for dropping him early with a very entertaining 66. We finished the day at 6 for 176 questioning why we left our best batting to the last innings.

Danish Sharma (Captain) - Carlingford, Ben Manenti (Vice-Captain), Patrick Mion - St Patrick’s, Ben John – Ryde Hunters Hill, Vinodh Thanabalasingan, Anushka Dissanayake , James Needham, Harry Spurr – Epping YMCA, Sean White – North Ryde RSL, Malcolm Campbell, Tom O’Connell – West Ryde, Connor Sheehan – Holy Cross.

This season could be described as ‘what could have been’. With only 3 players returning from last year’s team and 4 players new to rep cricket, we were certainly the most ‘changed’ team in our division. After starting the season well with a win in the trial, a washout in Round 1, an excellent win in R2 and a decent bowling display in awful conditions to start R3, we were in position to sit at the top of the division after 3 rounds. However, a poor batting display chasing runs in R3 was the start of us losing momentum after a very promising start. We couldn’t even win the toss until the last game! The step up to rep cricket from Saturday morning cricket is a difficult one and some players now know how hard it is to succeed at this level. We had some really talented players in this team and with this experience and better guidance they will perform much better next season. We did win 2 games during the year and for this team it was their only wins in rep cricket in the last 3 years. We had some good team bonding activities through the season and the spirit within the team was excellent.

Thanks to all the parents for their support and help through the year. A lot of help and advice was provided along the way and it was much appreciated. A very special thank you goes to Jennifer Campbell, our Manager, scorer, and font of all knowledge for our coach.

In late breaking news we can report that James Needham, our left arm opening bowler and punishing lower order batsman, was selected in the Emerging Blues u/14s squad for 2010-2011. James was very unlucky when playing for us as he only took 1 wicket but there were several dropped catches and many near misses. James produced the goods at the Emerging Blues Trials to make the final squad. Congratulations James.

Trial Match NDJCA (5/198) defeated Parramatta (10/164). Sean White 59no, Ben Manenti 48no, Connor Sheehan 40. Danish 3/14, Anushka 1/3, Patrick 1/5, Harry 1/7

The perfect cricket game. Win the toss, accumulate runs early but keep wickets in hand. Launch an attack in the last 20 overs where another 100 runs were added and then take 2 early wickets and defend a good score with tight bowling and energetic fielding. It all fell into place for this game and gave the boys a great confidence boost. After controlled batting by Connor and Ben M, Sean hit a blistering 59 to steer us to a commanding position. Everyone bowled and fielded well. Danish took 3 quick wickets as Parra tried in vain to increase the run rate after a slow start. The perfect trial.

Round 1 NDJCA v. South Eastern Game washed out.

Round 2 NDJCA (2/97) defeated Georges River St George (10/93). Tom 4/15, Patrick 2/10, Harry 1/12, Ben M 1/16, James 0/17. Ben M 37no and Ben J 31no

A clinical display by the boys today. Forced to bowl first, we applied the screws from the start and GRSG never got away from us. All the bowlers did a wonderful job in tying down their batsmen and in the latter overs as they tried to lift the run rate wickets fell quickly and GRSG were all out for 93 in the 48th over. All the bowlers did their job admirably. Tom took 4 wickets in mopping up the tail and the opposition coach voted Patrick our best bowler on the day by taking 2 vital wickets. Ben M bowled 10 consecutive overs of spin for superb figures of 1-16. Chasing 93 never looked in doubt once Ben Manenti and Ben John got together and systematically worked the ball to all parts of the field picking off 1s and 2s and hitting the odd boundary. They looked solid in defence and able to score off the loose balls. An excellent win against a formidable opponent who soundly beat us last year. Several opposition parents were questioning whether we were ‘North Shore’ or Northern Districts, as we they NDs easily last year.

Round 3 NDJCA (10/96) defeated by Inner West Harbour (10/123) Connor 3/12, Tom 2/26, Patrick 1/18, James 0/14. Danish 19, Harry 16, Ben J, 13, James 12no

This game was decided at the toss in overcast conditions. IWH won the toss and batted and within 5 overs the rain and wet outfield ruined the ball and our bowlers had slippery run ups. We did well to keep IWH to 123 given the awful bowling and fielding conditions and a useless ball. At lunch the sun came out and at afternoon tea we were 2-47. We needed 77 from the last 25 overs and we were looking good. However, in the first over after tea we lost our top scorer, and our batting fell away. Poor shot selection and the run out of our 2 top scorers from R2 led to us being all out for 96. Harry and James batted well at the end but the target was out of reach. With South Eastern rained out again, a win today would have had us top of the table with 2 to play and a lot of confidence. Even though the conditions impacted the result, we should have chased down the 124 to win.

Round 4 NDJCA (10-96) defeated by Newcastle (10/142) Anushka 4/9, Patrick 1/13, Ben M 1/18 Ben J 33.

Newcastle won the toss and predictably batted first and were cruising at 2-94. A great comeback inspired by a devastating spell of slow medium bowling by Anushka led to Newcastle being all out for 142. Patrick and Ben M were also effective with the ball. We started the run chase conservatively but kept our wickets in hand. At afternoon tea we needed 100 runs from 25 overs with 8 wickets in hand. Again, we collapsed after tea and were all out for 96. 2 run outs and 3 stumpings did not help our cause. Experience in batting second and chasing a score against good bowling is a skill which we have not mastered yet.

Round 5 NDJCA (10/44) defeated by Penrith (1/119) Tom 24. Patrick 1/13.

We saved our worst display for the last game and I am at a loss to know what happened. We finally won a toss and had a chance to set a score and try to defend it. We batted poorly and were all out 44. Tom opened the batting and scored freely for 24 runs. Three of our players played the ball back onto the stumps and we struggled against the swinging ball. Penrith rattled off the runs for an easy win. They sent us in again and we batted responsibly and batted 15 overs without losing a wicket (if only we could have done that in the 1st innings). Special thanks to Darcy O’Shea who came into the side as an emergency backup. Darcy was neat in the field and bowled a tight over when the batters were trying to lift the run rate.

Round 1 vs Hawkesbury Hawkesbury 4 / 58 – match washed out

It was a dream start to the season under overcast skies. Our bowlers bowled well and were well supported in the field and when the rain came we had kept them to just 2 runs per over and the calculators and rule books came out but the rain never stopped so we were left to ponder what might have been.

Round 2 vs Central Coast Northern District 8 / 128 def by Central Coast 5 / 133

A modest score from Northern District which does not tell the full tale. After an opening partnership of 36 between Court (14) and Clinton (7) we lost eight wickets for just 33 runs before Rohan (17*) and Jared (36*) steadied the ship and saw us to the final score. Their spinners did the damage with combined figures of 16 overs, 6 for 17. We bowled and fielded well but to no avail as Central Coast passed our score with six overs to spare.

Round 3 vs Manly Warringah Manly Warringah 77 def by Northern District 3 / 109

A steady start from their openers saw them reach 0 for 20 after eight overs but a change of bowling saw Cameron take 5 for 6 including a hat-trick, in what I can only describe as the best bowling I have seen in representative cricket. Following on from the fine performances in the field from the first two matches all of our bowlers bowled tight and were supported in the field with some great catching and a run out.

Cameron (39*) then opened the batting with Jack (15) for a solid opening partnership the removed any resolve that Manly may have had left in them. Good innings from Axel (13) and William (11*) saw us claim our first win for the season.

Round 4 vs Canterbury and Western Suburbs Canterbury and Western Suburbs 186 def Northern District 60 and 6 / 69

Again the final tale of the tape does not truly reflect the match. While Canterbury did score 186, some pluses to take out of the match were the fact that we stuck to our game and bowled them out in the 47th over and other than two back to back partnerships of 61 and 56 respectively; the remaining eight partnerships only netted 69 runs. After having them 2 for 23 we lifted our foots just a little and they shot off to 3 for 140.

With the bat we got off to a poor start losing our first wicket off the first ball of the innings to a brilliant catch in gully and it went downhill from there with only Angelo (12) and Michael (12*) reaching double figures. Needless to say we were asked to bat again but with better resolve in the second dig, Jared (24*), Patrick (19) and Michael (10), we saw off the overs and salvaged some pride.

54

Round 5 vs Fairfield Liverpool Fairfield Liverpool 9 / 145 def by Northern District 6 / 162

Again we showed our mettle as a top rate bowling and fielding side. Cameron (2 / 15) and Patrick (2/ 17) were the pick of the bowlers and were well supported by Axel (2 / 10) and Rohan (0 / 9 off 8). Patrick also chipped in with two catches, one off his own bowling. The only improvement we could have made would have been to bowl them out, as we allowed the last wicket to add 32 valuable runs which just goes to show how important it is to finish the innings off all the way to the end.

Our turn to chase in the last match of the season and it took a bit to get the player’s minds off the required run rate and to focus on each ball of each over, if you worry about the process the result will take care of itself. The boys were a little worried when we lost our first wicket in the 8th over with the score on 5 but Jack had done his job as an opener and seen off the opening bowlers which meant that the next batsmen could settle into their innings. I had faith in my team and when Michael (10) and Cameron (20) added 26 for the next partnership I could see the wind starting to fall from the sails of our opposition. The following partnerships were 10, 19 , 29 and 22 all good numbers to build the score to 6 / 111. When William joined Axel (65*) at the crease the required run rate was nothing alarming and the pair added the remaining 35 runs for the victory with relative ease and the boys finished the season on a high.

All in all it was a quite successful season on the back of some good fielding and tight bowling, the batting at times showed glimpses of something special and if we can put it all together and improve on it for next season we may have a winning season on our hands. Unfortunately, for this season we were left wondering what might have been, if not for the rain in round one and the spinners in round two we could have……but isn’t that the nature of the game.

Highlights for Round 5 : Anthony Adlam 128 no, Lachlan Hughes 53 no and Baxter Holt 39

Being the first season of representative cricket for all but one of the boys was always going to be tough. A full 50 overs for each team and I knew the boys were going to struggle in the last hour or so of the day as fatigue set in. Unfortunately first up we faced a North Shore side that had been together as a development team for two years and the difference in approach and attitude was obvious.

After being bundled out for 90 runs on an overcast morning it started to rain during the change of innings and North Shore came out of the blocks with all guns blazing. When play was eventually stopped they had scored 1 for 73 in 10 overs and we had used our “Get Out of Jail Free” card early in the season as the match was declared a draw.

Unfortunately things didn’t get any easier for the team and we lost the next three games to Georges River St George, Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and Manly Warringah. Although we were never really in a position to win any of those games there were a number of great individual efforts and periods when we put the opposition under pressure. I knew that if we could just put them together that we were capable of being very competitive.

And so it was that in the last game of the season, against Fairfield Liverpool, that the team put in a fantastic performance to score 2 for 260 and then bowl the opposition out for 154. A superb innings by our captain Anthony Adlam (128), ably supported by Baxter Holt (39) and Lachlan Hughes (53) who combined with Anthony for partnerships of 121 and 99 respectively got us into a great position. This was followed up by a great team effort in the field and we finished the season on the best possible note – A WIN!

Congratulations to all the boys on completing their first season of rep cricket. Everyone had some weaknesses exposed and have identified things to work on before next season starts but everyone learnt a lot about themselves and what a team effort really means, not least of which were the Coach and Manager in our first experience in this field.

NORTHERN DISTRICT CRICKET UMPIRES ASSOCIATION President’s Report

On behalf of our regular umpiring members, I present the Annual Report for the season 2009 - 2010. The Office Bearers of the Association remain unchanged from last season.

During the past season three umpires regularly stood in NDCA’s various grades, namely Col Hamilton, John Crane and Bob Flint. Peter Tate stood in Round 1 and Homer Paxton stood in Round 2. English Umpire John Boyles once again returned for his summer holidays and continued to Umpire Grade games. John made himself available for the Junior Rep games and we thanked him for his efforts. We have asked John to contact us next season when he comes back to Sydney.

The Association Secretary endeavoured to ensure that all grades received a fair share of “official” umpires by a system of rotation through the grades. Given however, that on each Saturday throughout the season, NDCA conducted some eighteen matches, it goes without saying that there is an urgent need for additional qualified umpires. In this regard, I would again appeal to all those more seasoned players who are considering “hanging up their boots” to stay involved in the game that they love by becoming an umpire. We have been advised that the Juniors will again run the Umpires Examinations with the NSWCU&SA at the end of the season and we extend our congratulations. This goes well with the Juniors in developing official umpires among their ranks and the chance to umpire in the Senior ranks for experience.

As well as the number of club matches, our members this year were again involved in the Inter District Representative matches which were held on Sundays in October and November. The matches were the Junior games in the Creak, Cawsey, Gee, Moore, Weblin and Watson Shields, with no Senior Representative teams. We convey our thanks to the following Umpires Bob Flint, Col Hamilton, John Crane, John Boyles, Kieran Gray, Alan Harrison, Ashley Flint and Warren McDonald. These matches provide an excellent opportunity to see up and coming young cricketers from many areas and to umpire a good standard of cricket. Bob, Col and John also umpired some of the semis and finals of the Junior Reps.

Members Bob Flint, Col Hamilton, John Crane and John Boyles were again selected to umpire the NSW District Cricket Association Girls Inter-Association Shield Carnival in the Mollie Dive Shield (U13) and the Margaret Pedan Shield (U15). The carnival was from 17th to 24th January 2010 and was held at The Eric Mobbs Reserve, Castle Hill over four grounds. Each age group played a round robin over three days with the finals on the last day. They also played a final 20/20 game between the 3rd and 4th placed teams on the final Sunday. Everyone enjoyed themselves in a very well organised competition.

My thanks go to our officiating umpires during the season. We were able to cover 8 of the ten Semi-Finals and all 5 Finals with the assistance of Alan Harrison, Craig Menzies, Jason LeGuier, Dale Arnott, Ken and Josh Tompsett.

Congratulations to all those who enjoyed success during the season and we look forward to seeing you all in 2010 – 2011.

Bob Flint, President

CRICKET ASSOCIATION

These are the teams who have, according to the Association’s records, played in the competitions during the NDCA’s 98 years of existence. Many of these clubs have vanished into the mists of time, some merged with other clubs, old ones went, new ones joined and many who were there at the beginning are still there and they helped form the nucleus of what very quickly became a strong and successful Association
