Z drugiej strony nauczenie si˛ekorzystania z automatycznego numerowania, automatycznych odnosników,´ spisów tresci´ itp. w Wordzie jest równie czasochłonne (a mo˙ze i bardziej czasochłonne) ni˙zopanowanie tych rzeczy w LATEXu; Skład dokumentu z du˙z˛aliczb ˛aobrazków i tabel mo˙zebyc´ wyzwaniem; WLATEXu trudno jest pisac´ bałaganiarskie dokumenty bez ˙zadnej struktury; Modyfikowanie wygl ˛adudokumentu (i dostosowywanie go do swoich wyobra˙zen)´ nie jest łatwe (chocia˙zdost˛epnestyle dokumentów zwykle s ˛adostatecznie ładne).     LaTeX on Macintosh Installing MacTeX and using TeXShop, as described on the main LaTeX page, is enough to get you started using LaTeX on a Mac. This page provides further information for experienced users. Similarly, to do an inverse search, right-click in the output window and choose "Sync". Spell-checking TeXShop does spell-checking using Apple's built in dictionaries, but the results aren't ideal, since TeXShop will mark most LaTeX commands as misspellings, and this will distract you from the real misspellings in your document. Below are two ways around this problem. • Use the spell-checking program Excalibur which is included with MacTeX (in the folder / Applications/TeX). Before you start spell-checking with Excalibur, open its Preferences, and in the LaTeX section, turn on "LaTeX command parsing". Then, Excalibur will ignore LaTeX commands when spell-checking. • Install CocoAspell (already installed in the Math Lab), then go to System Preferences, and open the Spelling preference pane. Choose the last dictionary in the list (the third one labeled "English (United States)"), and check the box for "TeX/LaTeX filtering".

Swenson February 16, 2018 This is a record of my LATEX installation procedure on 18 December 2013, incompletely updated on 16 February 2018. 1 Before you begin You must know what your operating system is, and whether it's a 32-bit or 64-bit version. I'm using Windows 7, 64-bit version. I'm assuming you're using Windows 7; if not, some details will be different. To check your version: from the Start menu, choose \Control Panel," then \System and Security," then \System." My machine says, \System type: 64-bit Operating System." 1 2 The MiKTeX back end Go to http://miktex.org/download, or google \MiKTeX" and look for a download site. This site offers a \Recommended Download." I chose the \All Downloads" tab and clicked on \Basic MiKTeX 2.9.6615 64-bit Installer" rather than taking the recommended 32-bit version. Your version number will be slightly different. This file is large (∼210 MB); it may take a while to download. When the download finishes, run the file. I had to click \Yes" in a \User Account Control" box to give the program permission to run, then check a box accepting the copyright conditions and click \Next." I installed MiXTeX for all users (click \Next") and accepted the default installation directory (\Next"). I changed the default paper size to \Letter" and chose \Yes" for \Install missing packages on-the-fly." Clicking \Next" and \Start" got the process underway. This step took 2 or 3 minutes. When the green progress bars disappeared, I clicked \Next" and \Close." 3 Ghostscript Go to http://www.ghostscript.com/download/, or google \Ghostscript" and look for a download site.

    1 Introduction 1.1 What is LATEX? LaTeX is a document preparation system for high-quality typesetting. It is most often used for medium-to-large technical or scientific documents but it can be used for almost any form of publishing. LaTeX is not a word processor! Instead, LaTeX encourages authors not to worry too much about the appearance of their documents but to concentrate on getting the right content. 1.2 Software TeX Distributions The easiest way to set up TeX is with a 500MB TeX distribution that includes many current TeX tools. The TeX distribution to download depends on what operating system you run. Windows - proTeXt is an installer for MikTeX, Ghostview and some extra software. Linux - TeXLive is included as a package in most versions of Linux. Mac OS X - MacTeX is a TeXLive installer for Mac. Editors Windows: Notepad, Texmaker, MeWa, Texlipse, Led, TeXworks, LyTeX, LyX, TeXnicCenter, Emacs, Scite, WinShell, Vim. (I would recommend TeXWorks if you want a GUI) Mac OS X: TexShop, Vim, Emacs, BBEdit, jEdit, TextWrangler, TeXworks, LyX, Texmaker Xcode- Latex. (I would recommend TexShop of TeXWorks if you want a GUI) Linux: LyX, Vim, Emacs, Texmaker, TeXworks, Kile, TeXmacs, gEdit.     Typesetting in 90 Minutes Andrew Caird <2013-07-09 Tue> On Wednesday, August 7, 2013 I’m going to give a quick introduc- tion to LATEX. I’ll be in the Johnson Rooms in the Lurie Building from 12:00p–1:30pm. I’ll be updating this blog entry in the coming weeks; please check back for updates, instructions, and notes. LATEX in 90 minutes In 90 minutes in the Johnson Rooms we’ll go over how to install LATEX on computers running Microsoft Windows, Apple OS X, and Ubuntu Linux, then how to write a simple document and produce a PDF file, how to add a title, author, table of contents, equations, and graphics. The last third of the time will be spent answering specific questions about LATEX. If you have experience with LATEX, the early part of the talk isn’t likely to be useful to you, but the later parts might be. You should bring a laptop, as this will be a hands-on discussion.     Installing LaTeX If you would like to write and compile your LaTeX documents from your own machine, rather than from a Cloud-based software, you will need to install 1. A TeX distribution (this contains all the necessary files to be able to compile the .tex file and produce the output) 2. A LaTeX editor (this is the software which you use to write and compile the .tex file). Here are some instructions on what to do depending on your machine: • If you have Windows: you can install the MiKTeX distribution, which includes the TeXworks editor. You may also want to install the TexMaker editor, or the TeXStudio editor, which are more advanced editors than TeXworks (although TeXworks will be fine for what we do on the day). • If you have Mac: you can install the MacTex distribution (the full one, NOT the basic one), which includes the TexShop editor.
