Reading an Archive Focussed on its Archivist – the case of Mohandas Gandhi By Vashna Jagarnath Historical Studies University of KwaZulu-Natal (Howard College Campus) Durban This is a draft paper please do not quote without permission of Author Gandhi began writing and keeping a record of his life from a very young age. His autobiography begins with the citation in full of a letter dating back to 1884 when he was fifteen. Although this little confession note, as Gandhi calls it, is a reproduction of the original it was with a letter of confession that Gandhi sought to begin to tell his story. The presence of the note is interesting given that he invested a large amount of time in his life writing - not just letters but petitions, newspaper articles, books and diaries. For the last forty years of his life he systematically wrote every day - describing every detail of his life from major political decisions to his dietary needs and bowel movements. As a result he has left behind one of the most comprehensive and voluminous archives of any individual in modern history. This archive has been edited and published as the Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi. It begins, like his autobiography, with this letter of confession to his father. The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi has been one of the main sources used by scholars to study Gandhi and will be a key source for my own PhD project.1 It therefore becomes important to try and understand something about the history of this particular archive. In addition to making some comments in this regard this short paper also tries to map out a basic periodisation of Gandhi’s correspondence through his life. -

Natalie Dormer Mixes S&M, Irony for “Venus in Fur” BY HILARY WEBB | OCTOBER 18, 2017 (/#FACEBOOK) (/#TWITTER) (/#PINTEREST) Natalie Dormer and David Oakes in "Venus in Fur" (Credit Tristram Kenton) The giant shadow of a leather-clad Natalie Dormer dominates the ceiling of Theatre Royal Haymarket in the latest production of David Ives’s “Venus in Fur.” Dormer leads the entire play with her strong delivery of humor, authority, her several ambiguous characters and, of course, her role within a complex submissive-dominant relationship. Dormer shares the stage with David Oakes in this production, directed by Patrick Marber. While “Venus in Fur” is often painted as being the play of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s founding text of masochism, “Venus in Furs” (1870), the play is also about adaptation, power and, much to the disdain of Oakes’s character Thomas, the consequences of art. The work has a complicated past. After all, Marber’s version is a British production of an American play about an imaginary play of an Austrian book. That’s not to mention that in 2013 Polish director Roman Polanski made a French film of the play. The story has crossed borders and language barriers, artistic mediums and social movements. What is it about this submission story that has captivated audiences for yet another adaptation? The raunchy subject matter seems like the obvious answer. Dormer’s character Wanda stumbles into a theatre for an audition clad in 21st-century S&M gear, where Oakes (the adapter and director, Thomas) is looking for an impossibly perfect actress to play Vanda in his faithful theatrical adaptation of “Venus in Furs.” What follows is an audition with Thomas reading as Severin, but really it is a hilariously dark struggle between actress and director, dominant and submissive, woman and man. -

Historic Royal Palaces, in association with Rusty Quill, presents Outliers Stories from the edge of history Season 2 Summary Season 2 of Outliers will launch on 5 November 2019 Outliers is an anthology of stories about the people hiding in the shadows of real events that took place at some of the greatest palaces ever built. 13 episodes explore ideas of change, otherness, gender and the meaning of power, all through the eyes of characters who have not traditionally held the historic limelight. Episodes are from award winning writers from Podcast shows such as Wooden Overcoats, The Magnus Archives, Wolf 359, The Bright Sessions, ars Paradoxica, the Far Meridien, Our Fair City, and We Fix Space Junk. The season will also include interviews from all our writers. Outliers is an historic fiction podcast that tells stories from the edge of history. The series explores how big historic events filter down and are viewed and shaped by the people in the shadows. Moments of larger change in smaller people’s lives. In this way, themes of otherness, change, gender and the meaning of power are explored through the eyes of characters who have not traditionally held the historic limelight. Some stories are warm and comedic, whilst others are dark, poignant and reflective, with powerful messages. Each episode is between 20 - 30 minutes long and tells a different story from a different character’s perspective. Each of the stories are narrated by a single voice, and are from differing periods of time, from the medieval era through to the Victorians. The series is an anthology, so each story is standalone but linked by common themes, as well as the palaces where these histories played out. -

He felt so mortified about his act that he decided to make a confession to his father. Parental forgiveness was granted to him in the form of silent tears. The incident left a lasting mark on his mind. In his own words, it was an object-lesson to him in the power of ahimsa. The Origins of Non-violence Tolstoy and Gandhi in Their Historical Settings Martin Green The Origins of Non-violence This book describes the world-historical forces, acting on the periphery of the modern world—in Russia in the nineteenth century—which developed the idea of nonviolence in Tolstoy and then in Gandhi. It was from Tolstoy that Gandhi first learned of this idea, but those world-historical forces acted upon and through both men. The shape of the book is a convergence, the coming together of two widely separate lives, under the stress of history. The lives of Tolstoy and Gandhi begin at widely separate points— of time, of place, of social origin, of talent and of conviction; in the course of their lives, they become, respectively, military officer and novelist, and lawyer and political organizer. They win fame in those roles; but in the last two decades of their lives, they occupy the same special space—ascetic/saint/prophet. Tolstoy and Gandhi were at first agents of modern reform, in Russia and India. But then they became rebels against it and led a profound resistance—a resistance spiritually rooted in the traditionalism of myriad peasant villages. The book’s scope and sweep are enormous.
