My doctoral program overlapped with my becoming President of the Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution (CICR) and later Director, Program Development in Conflict Studies at Saint Paul University, Ottawa. While I was at CICR, hundreds of people participated in over 60 two-day seminars. The seminars, which were interactive and generative, helped to refine many of the ideas presented here. The position at Saint Paul University allowed time for me to complete this work. Core insights were based on research I did for my doctoral program. Professor John van den Hengel gave excellent counsel for my dissertation and modelled a laudable combination of intellectual depth, respect and enthusiasm for ideas. As a friend and mentor he has contributed significantly to the depth and rigour of my academic work. Likewise, professors Ken Melchin, Jean-Marc Larouche, André Beauregard, Hubert Doucet and Achiel Peelman stimulated my intellectual growth and development. Her presentation on “loving mimesis” at the Colloquium on Violence and Religion at Loyola University in 1994 was an epiphany for me. I am grateful that she added a vignette in Chapter 12, telling the story of how she arrived at her original insights. The staff at Novalis has been truly outstanding. Commissioning Editor Kevin Burns had a knack for providing feedback on what really “worked” in the book. Early on, he caught the vision for what the book was about. Ellen Shenk streamlined the text wonderfully and Managing Editor Anne Louise Mahoney attended to the many details of getting it right. Anne Chevalier and Christiane Lemire attended to the aesthetics of the book. Christian Bellehumeur and Guillaume Theoret took my rough sketches and turned them into polished graphics. My parents, Bill and Loreen Redekop, imparted to me a passion for peace as they modelled community action to create what I now call mimetic structures of blessing. They joined my children – Quinn, with his wife Sue, Natasha and Lisa – in enthusiastically cheering me on. Gloria Neufeld Redekop has continued to share her life with me in a crucible that has allowed me to live the ideas presented. Not only in my native South Africa, where oppressive laws and brutal practices scarred generations, but also in Jerusalem, Addis Ababa, Biafra and Belfast I have felt the imminence of violence in the air. What Vern Neufeld Redekop describes in this book as violence I have known about in all its forms. Now he brings to the table of those wishing to diminish the power of violence in this world a conceptual framework that helps us name with greater precision the dynamics of hurtful actions, policies and impulses. Nor am I a stranger to blessing as the result of reconciliation processes. “Blessing” as Redekop uses the word has a close family resemblance to the concept of ubuntu, which guided many of us through the taxing days of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Ubuntu speaks of the essence of being human. It includes qualities of generosity, hospitality, friendliness, caring and compassion. It expresses the fact that humanity is shared and that through our human connectedness we find our identities. People with ubuntu feel good about the well- being and success

Transforming Conflict: A Group Relations Perspective Abstract This article offers a group relations perspective of conflict and conflict transformation and explores how conflict manifests on the individual, interpersonal, group, and inter-group levels. Conflict and aggression are defined as normal aspects of the human condition. Current theories and practices in the field of conflict transformation tend to be more rationally based. The uthora uses concepts from psychoanalytic theory, such as defense mechanisms; and concepts from open systems theory, such as task, role, boundaries, and authority, to argue that in order to transform conflict, it is essential to understand the non-rational and often unconscious emotional elements that operate in groups and systems. Psychiatry encounters the philosophical problems of mind and body in a particularly urgent, poignant, and intractable form. For psychiatrists have characteristically sought to treat the sufferings and disabilities of mental disorder as disturbances of the physical brain. The reasons for this are unimpeachable. We have come fully to appreciate that the processes we experience as mental are in fact physical ones, centred in the brain. In light of this we accept, as the tradition of Hippocrates has long maintained, that we ‘ought to know that from the brain and nothing else but the brain… we become mad and delirious, and fears and terrors assail us…and dreams, and untimely wanderings, and cares that are not suitable, and ignorance of present circumstances.’1 But of course acknowledging the role of the brain has no effect at all on the way we actually think when we engage with persons and other objects in the world. Whatever their scientific orientation human beings alike experience perceiving, feeling, thinking, deciding, etc. as mental phenomena -- things that are registered in their minds – and that they distinguish from the physical phenomena that they can see and touch, observe in an X-ray or brain scan, etc. This deep sense of difference persists alongside the acknowledgement of sameness because the sense of difference is rooted not in the things themselves but in the ways we think about them.2 Reality is one thing, the ways we think about it another.

    The Myth of “Ethnic Conflict”: Politics, Economics, and “Cultural” Violence Edited by Beverly Crawford and Ronnie D. Lipschutz Description: In the last decade, discourses of economic and political liberalization and globalization have swept the world. Yet during this same period and all across the globe, many states are fragmenting and more than 30 ethnic and sectarian conflicts have displaced or killed millions of people — and far more civilians than soldiers. The authors in this volume argue that much of this violence is closely linked to those globalizing forces and demands for economic liberalization which have weakened states' capacities, both political and financial, for redistributing resources. As a result, many states have been forced to break established social contracts, often dramatically changing power relations in heterogeneous societies that previously had been relatively stable. Drawing on case studies from Asia, Eastern Europe, North Africa, the former Soviet Union, and the United States, the authors demonstrate how these distributional issues and power shifts have been experienced as ethnic and religious discrimination and are often at the root of identity politics and violent, so-called “cultural,” conflicts.
