Delaware Smash New Site Release2[1] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 10, 2004 Contact: Jeff Harrison or Crystal Freeman, 302-774-4238 DELAWARE SMASH NAME NEW HOME FOR 2004 WORLD TEAMTENNIS SEASON Wilmington, Del. (February 10, 2004) – Jeff Harrison, co-owner of the Delaware Smash, announced today that the Smash will play all home matches for the World TeamTennis (WTT) Pro League on the grounds of AstraZeneca’s North American headquarters in Wilmington, Del. The Smash, who have played on clay courts at the DuPont Country Club for the past six years, will move to a hard court surface at AstraZeneca’s headquarters beginning in July. AstraZeneca has been a sponsor of the Delaware Smash since 1999, and 2004 marks the second year the company will be the presenting sponsor. The Smash, the only team in the League still playing on clay courts, had to switch to hard courts to conform to new League standards. DuPont and the DuPont Country Club have been tremendous supporters of the Delaware Smash and WTT over the years and will continue to be. “AstraZeneca's commitment as the Delaware Smash's presenting sponsor and host site will help increase the visibility of the Smash in the community” said Harrison. “The fans will continue to view world-class tennis in an intimate, beautiful tree-lined setting.” “AstraZeneca has shown its commitment to the local community by sponsoring family-oriented events and programs for their benefit and enjoyment,” said Luanne Byers, VP of Corporate & Community Affairs for AstraZeneca. “We are pleased to sponsor and host the World TeamTennis 2003 League Champions for their 2004 season. League Background Billie Jean King and Larry King originated World TeamTennis and its unique gender-equity team concept in the early 70’s. The format used for a WTT Pro League match features teams comprised of two men, two women and a coach. Each match consists of five sets, with one set each of men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The WTT Pro League is presented by ADT Security Services. The Washington Kastles, owned by a group led by venture capitalist and entrepreneur Mark Ein, will play their home matches at a Washington, D.C., location soon to be announced. The 2008 WTT regular season runs July 3-23 with the WTT Championship Weekend set for July 24-27 in Roseville, Calif. World TeamTennis, co-founded in 1974 by tennis legend Billie Jean King, features several generations of tennis pros competing in a co-ed pro league in communities throughout the U.S. each summer. This is the first Washington, D.C.-based team in the League’s 33-year history. “Washington D.C. is a world-class sports market that will be a showcase for World TeamTennis,” said WTT CEO/Commissioner Ilana Kloss. “We’ve looked at this market for several years as a great location for expansion. Thanks to the leadership and vision of Mark Ein, everything came together for it to happen this year.” “Area fans have supported tennis for many years and we think they will really embrace our unique brand of tennis,” added Kloss. The Kastles will select their lineup when they draft sixth out of 11 teams at the WTT Player Draft on April 1 in Miami. Washington will play seven home matches and seven matches on the road during the month-long season. Jeff Harrison was promoted to Vice President, League Properties; Samantha Shaw to Vice President, League Operations; and Jason Spitz to Vice President, Marketing. Harrison, Shaw and Spitz are part of the management team which also includes David Egdes, Vice President, WTT. World TeamTennis is a professional tennis league using a gender -equity team concept and was co -founded by Billie Jean King in the early 1970s. The two new ad ditions to the WTT staff are Nancy Steers as Director of Sponsorships and Kerry Schneider as Marketing Coordinator. As Vice President, League Properties, Harrison will manage and oversee all League- owned teams and the WTT Finals held in New York City. Har rison, who formerly worked with IMG and the United States Tennis Association, has been with WTT for seven years and currently co -owns the Delaware Smash, a WTT Pro League team. As Vice President, League Operations, Shaw will oversee team operations and ass ist in player recruitment. Shaw will also handle internal public relations for WTT headquarters, coordinate the KidCaster and Adopt-A-School programs and serve as editor of Supertiebreaker magazine and the WTT Media Guide. Shaw has been with WTT for seven years. In his new position, Spitz will lead all marketing programs and sponsor relations activities for the League.
