Introduction and Project Progress during the reporting period 1. Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a project loan of US$ 350 Million for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of about 1400 -1500 Km of major district roads. The Project was approved in principal by ADB on 2016. The Project loan agreement was approved by ADB on 22 March, 2017 and declared effective. The total project cost estimated as US$ 500 Million, the remaining part of the project cost US$ 150 Million was funded by M.P. State Government. The project is divided into three consulting and quality control services packages, comprising of 23 civil work contracts i.e. package-1 (Bhopal-1), Package-2 (Jabalpur) and Package-3 (Rewa). Package-1 civil work construction supervision is awarded to URS Scott Wilson India Private Limited in association with AICONS Engineering Pvt. Ltd., Bhopal, India, Package-2 Projects is awarded to M/s MSV International Inc., USA in joint venture with Highway Engineering Consultants, Indiaand Package-3 is awarded to M/s Intercontinental Consultants and Technocrats Pvt. Ltd., India in joint venture with Rodic Consultants Pvt. Ltd., India. 2. These projects will improve transport efficiency of the State road network which will contribute to expansion of economic opportunities and poverty reduction. All above packages awarded under the project titled Madhya Pradesh District Roads II Sector Project (MPDRIISP) and Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC) is the executing agency for the projects. The total project length is 1456.83 Km. 3. Package – 1 (Bhopal) consists 5 civil work contractsi.e. Package 1, 2, 3. 4 and 5 consisting 9 roads, covering 279.78 Km length of MDRs. This package involves widening and reconstruction of about 279.78 kilometre of selected district roads in Madhya Pradesh and titled as “Madhya Pradesh District Roads II Sector Project (MPDRIISP) Package-1, Bhopal”. 4. Package – 2 (Jabalpur) consists 7 civil work contracts i.e. Packages 6, 7, 8, 10,11,12, & 14 consisting 24 roads covering 589.14 Km length of MDRs. This package involves widening and reconstruction of about 589.14 Km of selected district roads in Madhya Pradesh and titled as “Madhya Pradesh District Roads II Sector Project (MPDRIISP) Package-2, Jabalpur”. 5. Package – 3 (Rewa) consists of 6 civil work contracts i.e. Packages 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 & 20, consisting 15 roads, covering 398.855 Km length of MDRs. Further, three more packages i.e., 21, 22 & 23 were included under MPDRIISP, Package– 3 vide letter no. 14496/18/MPRDC/ ADB-V/MPDRIISP dated 14/11/2017 which consists 8 roads, covering 189.047 Km length of MDRs. The packages 15, 16, 18 and 22 are further subdivided into two packages each i.e. 15 A & 15 B, 16 A & 16 B, 18 A & 18 B and 22 A & 22 B. As per ADB’s Safeguard Policy Statement (2009)all the sub projects have been categorized as category B. The project has been divided into 25 packages consisting of 56 roads. During the reporting period the construction workis in progress at Package 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 under MPDRIISP Package-1 (Bhopal), at Package 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12 & 14 under MPDRIISP Package-2 (Jabalpur) and at Package 15B, 16B, 17, 18A, 18B, 19, 20 &23 under MPDRIISP Package-3 (Rewa). MoRTH, Government of India has declared new National Highway (NH-543) vide Gazette Notification dated 3rd January 2017. NH-543 starts from the junction with NH-43 Shahdol connecting Dindori, Mandla, Nainpur, Lamta, Balghat in the state of Madhya Pradesh connecting Rajegaon, Dhamangaon, Rawandi, Gondia, Amgaon, Deori, Korchi, Kurkheda, Wadsa (Desaiganj) and terminating at its junction with NH-353D near Bramhapuri in the state of Maharashtra. 2. The Proposed project road is part of the newly declared NH-543, Balaghat to Gondia Section of NH-543 from km 0.000 to km 48.070 in the State of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. 3. Total length of the existing stretch is about 41.55 Km and length of proposed project road is 48.070 km. Out of 48.070 km stretch, 29.700 km stretch is in the State of Madhya Pradesh (Package-1A) and 18.370 km is in the State of Maharashtra (Package-1B) 4. 4 lane with paved shoulder configuration has been proposed for the entire stretch. 5. The proposed alignment is passing through 4 Tehsils (Lalbarra, Waraseoni, Balaghat & Kirnapur) of Balaghat district in the State of Madhya Pradesh and 1 Tehsil (Gondia) of Gondia district in the State of Maharashtra. 6. The proposed alignment is passing through 34 villages (21 villages in Balaghat District in the State of Madhya Pradesh and 13 villages in Gondia District in the State of Maharashtra).

Nearly one fourth of the total population of the state is inhabited by tribals such as Baigas, Gonds, Korku , etc. tribes. An ethno-medico-botanical survey among different tribal pockets of Balaghat district, viz. Gangulapara, Lamta, Laugur, Langi, Baihar, Bithali, Lalbarra, etc. was carried out during the year 2007-2008 and folklore information was collected on 50 medicinal plants species belonging to 50 genera and 31 families with the help of tribal medicine men. Out of 50 plants, 15 predominant plants used in refractory diseases such as cancer, malaria, rheumatism, liver disorders and respiratory diseases, etc. These uses are not reported in earlier published literatures.
