BFI Press Release: Missing Believed Wiped Bumper Christmas Stocking
For Immediate Release: Tuesday 7 November 2017, London. The BFI’s Missing Believed Wiped returns to BFI Southbank this December to present British television rediscoveries, not seen by audiences for decades, since their original transmission dates. The exciting, bespoke line-up of TV gems feature some of our most-loved television celebrities and iconic characters including Alf Garnett in Till Death Us Do Part: Sex Before Marriage, Cilla Black in her eponymous BBC show featuring Dudley Moore , Jimmy Edwards in Whack-O!, a rare interview with Peter Davison about playing Doctor Who and a significant screen debut from a young Pete Postlethwaite. Lost for 50 years and thought only to survive in part, Till Death Us Do: Sex Before Marriage, originally broadcast on 2 January, 1967 on BBC1, sees Warren Mitchell’s Alf Garnett rail against the permissive society, featuring guest star John Junkin alongside regular cast members Dandy Nichols, Anthony Booth and Una Stubbs. Although the existence of this missing episode from the 2nd series has been known for some years, previous attempts to screen the episode had been refused with the print in the hands of a private collector. Having recently changed hands, MBW is delighted that access has been granted for this special one off screening, for one of 1960s best known and controversial UK television characters. Following last year’s successful screening of a previously lost episode of Jimmy Edwards’s popular 1950s BBC school-themed comedy romp Whack-O!, this year’s MBW programme includes a 1959 episode entitled The Empty Cash Box. Written by Frank Muir and Dennis Norden and starring Jimmy Edwards as the cane-happy headmaster, this episode was originally broadcast on the BBC on 1st December 1959. -

During the summer months we watch Pembury come alive. The trees and the countryside are beautiful and the oak tree on the Green seems a perfect symbol. Events like the Summer Fayre, when visitors remark that they are pleased to be here and not in the town, remind us of what we have and what we share. Sadly we still have those few – maybe younger members – who seem to want to destroy and damage. -

Model of Care for Acute Surgery National Clinical Programme in Surgery Model of Care for Acute Surgery National Clinical Programme in Surgery Forward The National Clinical Programme in Surgery is delighted to publish the Acute Surgery Model of Care. The aim of the Surgery Programme is to provide a framework for the delivery of more timely, accessible, safer, cost effective and efficient care for the acute surgical patient. This follows on from the Elective Surgery Model of Care which is currently being rolled out across Ireland. While understanding the difficulties facing healthcare delivery at the present time, we believe that the principles laid out in this document represent best practice that will, in the long term, fundamentally improve surgical care. Change of this magnitude will clearly take time to implement and will impact all care providers and the organisations within which they work. We also acknowledge that the patient care that is provided by surgeons and anaesthetists cannot be delivered without the support of a wide range of other professional and ancillary groups. Finally, we welcome the collaboration with the other programmes charged with the delivery of acute patient care. This final document could not have been completed without the widespread input and suggestions that we have received from our own team, the surgical and healthcare community as well as patients themselves. The History of Cricket in Oregon, 1870s–1920s CRAIG OWEN JONES THE FAILURE OF AMERICAN CRICKET TO FLOURISH during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries is the Rorschach inkblot test for sports historians — each sees in the failure whatever they wish to see. Arriv- ing at a viable explanation, one that takes into account class distinctions, practical considerations, differences of national character, and exactly how much weight to assign to the influence on would-be cricketers of baseball in the second half of the nineteenth century, has been a long and arduous process, summarized by George Kirsch in his excellent recent overview.1 Scholars, however, have been able to agree on one thing: changes in clubs’ membership composition is crucial to understanding the subject. For much of the nineteenth century, cricket was a sport that straddled class divides; in Philadelphia, the spiritual home of American cricket, the game was the province of working-class players just as much as it was of their middle-class and upper-class counterparts.2 As the century wore on, however, in places where middle-and upper-class British immigrant society patronized the game, the promoters of cricket ultimately failed to convert enough sportsmen to play beyond their class ranks. When the stream of new arrivals from the United Kingdom dwindled, so too did cricket as an endeavor that was able to reach beyond the niche of English American society. Following changes in immigration patterns during the 1890s, the demographic balance shifted from the British Isles and Northern Europe to the Mediterranean and East- ern Europe, especially following the 1921 Immigration Restriction Act and subsequent legislation.3 The history of cricket in Oregon provides an interesting corollary to this model. -

Henry Attfield, 18th century Cricketer Revised in December 2008 1 by John Attfield Very few Attfields have achieved the distinction of an entry in the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia. Indeed the only historical Attfield entry to be found there refers to an 18th cen- tury English cricketer and reads as follows: Henry Attfield (1756 – c.1829) was an English cricketer who made his first known appearance in the 1773 season. Aged 17 at the time, he must have been a genuine 1773 debutant. He was a native of Bagshot in Surrey. He played frequently for Surrey but was still only 26 when his career ended in 1782 (sic). He seems to have been known as “Field” and this often appeared on old scorecards. 2 A further summary of the published information about Henry Attfield has been kindly provided by cricket’s “Bearded Wonder” Bill Frindall: Henry Attfield was born at Bagshot in 1756 and was only 17 when he first ap- peared for Surrey against Hambledon. He lived most of his life in Chertsey, dying there c1829 when 73. No tombstone was erected to his memory. A sawyer by trade, his name was usually abbreviated to ‘Field’. He was in the Surrey XI (along with ‘Lumpy’ Stevens) that was invited to Paris by the English ambassador, the third Duke of Dorset, a mission aborted by the onset of the French Revolution, luckily before the team sailed from Dover. 3 So this Henry Attfield was apparently a not insignificant figure in the early history of Eng- lish cricket. But which Henry Attfield was he? This article examines the evidence. -
