Compassion and courage Australian doctors and dentists in the Great War Medical History Museum, University of Melbourne War has long brought about great change and discovery in medicine and dentistry, due mainly to necessity and the urgency and severity of the injuries, disease and other hardships confronting patients and practitioners. Much of this innovation has taken place in the field, in makeshift hospitals, under conditions of poor Compassion hygiene and with inadequate equipment and supplies. During World War I, servicemen lived in appalling conditions in the trenches and were and subjected to the effects of horrific new weapons courage such as mustard gas. 'In a Country Churchyard'
IN A COUNTRY CHURCHYARD - CHRISTCHURCH, MAGOURNEY. Near the village of Coachford is the Church of Ireland graveyard of Christchurch. It is a smallish, rectangular area behind the now deconsecrated church, and on first glance is of no more, or less interest than the vast majority of such resting places to be found throughout the country. But a closer inspection reveals a different picture, for among the 37 memorial stones dating from 1904 to 1995 can be found an extraordinary collection of memorials to officers of the British forces of World War One, together with some very interesting reminders of the old Protestant people of the parish, now gone to their rest. So, let's take a peek, in no particular order. The HAYES cross and grave. Rev Richard Thomas Hayes, M.A., was Rector of the parish for 31 years, and it was he who oversaw the laying out of the new graveyard. His own son Henry, a lieutenant in the Navy, who had joined the Navy as a midshipman in 1895 was fated to become the first to be buried in the new cemetery. Also in the grave is another son, Rev. Richard Babington Hayes, who was curate in Myross, and like his brother died at an early age. Their father, Rev. Richard Thomas is also here buried, and the Cork Examiner carries an interesting account of his funeral, attended by all classes and creeds in the parish, in 1911. The LEADER/JELLETT monument commemorates Frank Leader (F H M Leader) of Classas and his family. Among them are his son William (F W M) Leader, lately of the Connaught Rangers (The Devil's Own), who was killed in action 26th August 1914. -

Creating a Scene: The Role of Artists’ Groups in the Development of Brisbane’s Art World 1940-1970 Judith Rhylle Hamilton Bachelor of Arts (Hons) University of Queensland Bachelor of Education (Arts and Crafts) Melbourne State College A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2014 School of English, Media Studies and Art History ii Abstract This study offers an analysis of Brisbane‘s art world through the lens of artists‘ groups operating in the city between 1940 and 1970. It argues that in the absence of more extensive or well-developed art institutions, artists‘ groups played a crucial role in the growth of Brisbane‘s art world. Rather than focusing on an examination of ideas about art or assuming the inherently ‗philistine‘ and ‗provincial‘ nature of Brisbane‘s art world, the thesis examines the nature of the city‘s main art institutions, including facilities for art education, the art market, conservation and collection of art, and writing about art. Compared to the larger Australian cities, these dimensions of the art world remained relatively underdeveloped in Brisbane, and it is in this context that groups such as the Royal Queensland Art Society, the Half Dozen Group of Artists, the Younger Artists‘ Group, Miya Studios, St Mary‘s Studio, and the Contemporary Art Society Queensland Branch provided critical forms of institutional support for artists. Brisbane‘s art world began to take shape in 1887 when the Queensland Art Society was founded, and in 1940, as the Royal Queensland Art Society, it was still providing guidance for a small art world struggling to define itself within the wider network of Australian art. -

3 Researchers and Coranderrk Coranderrk was an important focus of research for anthropologists, archaeologists, naturalists, historians and others with an interest in Australian Aboriginal people. Lydon (2005: 170) describes researchers treating Coranderrk as ‘a kind of ethno- logical archive’. Cawte (1986: 36) has argued that there was a strand of colonial thought – which may be characterised as imperialist, self-congratulatory, and social Darwinist – that regarded Australia as an ‘evolutionary museum in which the primi- tive and civilised races could be studied side by side – at least while the remnants of the former survived’. This chapter considers contributions from six researchers – E.H. Giglioli, H.N. Moseley, C.J.D. Charnay, Rev. J. Mathew, L.W.G. Büchner, and Professor F.R. von Luschan – and a 1921 comment from a primary school teacher, named J.M. Provan, who was concerned about the impact the proposed closure of Coranderrk would have on the ability to conduct research into Aboriginal people. Ethel Shaw (1949: 29–30) has discussed the interaction of Aboriginal residents and researchers, explaining the need for a nuanced understanding of the research setting: The Aborigine does not tell everything; he has learnt to keep silent on some aspects of his life. There is not a tribe in Australia which does not know about the whites and their ideas on certain subjects. News passes quickly from one tribe to another, and they are quick to mislead the inquirer if it suits their purpose. Abstract The development of modern European scholarship and art, more marked.in Austria and Germany, had produced by the early part of the twentieth century challenging innovations in art and the principles of art historical scholarship. Art history, in its quest to explicate the connections between art and mind, time and place, became a discipline that combined or connected various fields of enquiry to other historical moments. Hitler's accession to power in 1933 resulted in a major diaspora of Europeans, mostly German Jews, and one of the most critical dispersions of intellectuals ever recorded. Their relocation to many western countries, including Australia, resulted in major intellectual and cultural developments within those societies. By investigating selected case studies, this research illuminates the important contributions made by these individuals to the academic and cultural studies in Melbourne. Dr Ursula Hoff, a German art scholar, exiled from Hamburg, arrived in Melbourne via London in December 1939. After a brief period as a secretary at the Women's College at the University of Melbourne, she became the first qualified art historian to work within an Australian state gallery as well as one of the foundation lecturers at the School of Fine Arts at the University of Melbourne. While her legacy at the National Gallery of Victoria rests mostly on an internationally recognised Department of Prints and Drawings, her concern and dedication extended to the Gallery as a whole. -

The Tyran n y of the Lea ther Bo ok: Post colonialism, M ental Illness a nd Prisons in Australia Joan E Clarke, PhD Introduction: Shaping Relationships by Space and Symbol This essay explores how colonial legacies continue to affect people with severe mental illness in Australia, sometimes positively but mostly adversely. The exploration begins over two centuries ago when colonial white settlers brought with them an intention to own land. Along with this intention they brought their knowledge of how to manage large spaces by the use of European mapping, naming of places, British law, architecture and institutions. This paper follows the trail of how settlers shaped Australian landscapes with their laws that in turn helped to determine a hierarchy of colonial social relationships. Sherene Razack in her work on space, race and the law, argues that land, when it is set aside for specific purposes by statutes or government acts, is a statement about race and culture. Law plays a direct role in producing space by stipulating land use and purpose.1 For people with a mental illness in Australia an abiding fact is governments’ regulation of their personhood stretching back to colonial times. Laws were statements about their sanity. Asylums were statements about their place. In the State of Victoria, for example, before Federation in 1901, until now, there have been over 60 Lunacy Acts, Lunacy Statutes, Mental Hygiene Acts, and Mental Health Acts beginning with the Colony of New South Wales Lunacy Act of 1928. A new Victorian Mental Health Act will come into existence in 2013. -
