ECF Yearbook 2015 ECF Yearbook 2012 FOREWORD - Dominic Lawson Greetings! This year started with the resignation of my predecessor and a somewhat contentious FIDE presidential elec- tion in which the ECF played a forthright role. On the fortunately more rational domestic scene , ECF man- agers and directors delivered the core national championships in Aberystwyth for the British, Uppingham for the National Schools, High Wycombe for the National Clubs, Warwick for the National Counties, Sunningdale for the English Seniors, Surrey for the U18 Counties and Central London for the English Girls and British Blitz. Meanwhile, strong international open and women’s teams represented England in the Olympiad in Tromsø, with GM David Howell delivering an especially impressive performance at the latter. English teams also com- peted well in World and European Championships for Amateurs, Youth, Schools, Clubs and Individuals. The highlight was the performance of GM Keith Arkell who became the first European Seniors (50+) Champion and the World Seniors (50+) Silver Medalist. His achievements were deservedly recognised with the ECF Player of the Year Award, which I had the pleasure of presenting to him during the London Chess Classic in December. With the additional presence of GM Dr John Nunn, in a most welcome return to the board, we anticipate a formidable England team in the 2015 World Senior Team Championships in Dresden. In November I was delighted to attend the first meeting at the House of Commons of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Chess, chaired by Yasmin Qureshi MP, and organised by the charity Chess in Schools and Communities. This historic occasion--the first Parliamentary recognition for chess--should bring benefits in coming years. Internal improvements to the ECF’s contribution were focused on building a foundation more suited to the national governing body. The Board signed up to the Voluntary Code of Good Governance for the Sport and Recreation Sector and established the ECF Forum. The stage was set for much needed foundation improvements, by the establishment of an Independent Constitution and Governance Review Commission to begin work in 2015. ECF members interested in a better English Chess Federation should stay alert for opportunities to contribute. A particular objective is to attract more female players into the game: the ECF is leading the way with free entry for all females into the 2015 British Championship. Finally, I would like to say a particular thank you to the arbiters and tournament organisers who give up so much of their time for the benefit of English chess. All of us who love the game are in their debt. - Dominic Lawson, President, ECF 1 CONTENTS Foreword 1 ECF Board, Officials & Office 2 - 6 Directors’ Reports 7 - 20 FIDE Honours List 21 - 22 Awards - President’s Award, Club, Player & Book of the Year 23 - to DOOR DORE VILLAGE SOCIETY No. 28 WINTER 1992 ISSN 0965-8912 The Origin of local Surnames Following the Annual General Meeting of the Dore Village Society held on 7th October, 1992, Professor David Hey of the University of Sheffield gave a most interesting talk. A research class of the Division of Continuing Education, under the guidance of David Hey, had been meeting to study local surnames - how they arose, how they spread and their present distribution. Every area had distinctive surnames, Sheffield being no exception - Broomhead, Crapper, Crookes, Elshaw, Furness, Hattersley, Scargill for example. Surmanes arose for a variety of reasons, most commonly occupational - Smith, Miller, nicknames - White, Gray, from father's name - Johnson, Williamson and topographical - Hill, Brook and Green. Many names came from a very localised area such as a farm or small hamlet. It usually meant that this was the place of origin and did not indicate any high position in the locality e.g. Biltcliffe - from Upper and Lower Bilerscliffe Farms near Penistone, Stainforth - from Stoney Ford near Wincobank. The early information had been gained Stannington Brass Band entertains the crowds at Dare Show 92 from the poll tax returns of 1379. Other sources were the list of Cutlers of 1614 and the register of apprentices and freemen from 1624 to 1814. Hearth tax returns, information DORE VILLAGE SOCIETY In Rememberance on births and deaths and the census returns SPECIAL GENERAL index for Sheffield 1841 had been invaluable On November 8th we again remembered sources. • What Is a “Short Club” and Why Should You Avoid It? Curt Soloff
What is a “short club” and why should you avoid it? Curt Soloff Bridge has a lexicon of its own, and at times the semantics become rather confusing. Fortunately, we can turn to ACBL and its convention card/alert chart standards for official definitions of terms that players often misunderstand. For this article, I have selected the “short club” as the topic of exploration. I am piggybacking this column on the recent Bridge Bulletin article by Larry Cohen (February 2017 issue, p. 32). In the Standard American and 2/1 Game Forcing systems that predominate U.S. clubs and tournaments, it is common to open 1♣ with as few as three clubs. Doing so is a necessity of the five card major system and is seldom problematic, since our emphasis ultimately lies in trying to play in a major suit or no-trump. That said, we still need some structure associated with our minor suits for the times we do want to play our contracts there, be they partscores, games, or slams. Cohen’s article, which focus on the 1♦ opening, reviews the standard practice of opening 1♦ when we are 4-4 in the minors but 1♣ when we are 3-3 in the minors. Many players have asked me over the years why we bid this way, and Cohen answers the question well: following this standard means that our 1♦ opening nearly promises (close to 97% of the time) a four card suit. When a major fit cannot be found, the responder can comfortably take a preference to diamonds with just four card support because it is safe to assume an eight card (or better) fit.

  • Cricket Memorabilia Society Postal Auction Closing at Noon 10
CRICKET MEMORABILIA SOCIETY POSTAL AUCTION CLOSING AT NOON 10th JULY 2020 Conditions of Postal Sale The CMS reserves the right to refuse items which are damaged or unsuitable, or we have doubts about authenticity. Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid no later than 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia for auction on its website no later than 3 weeks prior to the closing date of the auction. Bids will only be accepted from CMS members. Postal bids must be in writing or e-mail by the closing date and time shown above. Generally, no item will be sold below 10% of the lower estimate without reference to the vendor.. Thus, an item with a £10-15 estimate can be sold for £9, but not £8, without approval. The incremental scale for the acceptance of bids is as follows: £2 increments up to £20, then £20/22/25/28/30 up to £50, then £5 increments to £100 and £10 increments above that. So, if there are two postal bids at £25 and £30, the item will go to the higher bidder at £28. Should there be two identical bids, the first received will win. Bids submitted between increments will be accepted, thus a £52 bid will not be rounded either up or down. Items will be sent to successful postal bidders the week after the auction and will be sent by the cheapest rate commensurate with the value and size of the item.
