SEPTEMBER Monkey around with amazing animal antics! How did the monkey make toasted cheese? It put it under the gorilla!!!! Monkeys usually live in family groups or troops and spend most of their day foraging for food, eating and sleeping! Chimpanzees eat fruit, berries, seeds, leaves, insects, honey and birds eggs. They are also skilled and deadly predators and hunt, kill and eat lizards, bush pigs and other monkeys! Chimps have hands like ours with 4 fingers and a short thumb, this means they can grasp and hold things. They are very intelligent and use tools to help them get their food. They use: sticks to dig out insects, like termites from termite mounds stones and rocks like a hammer to crack open hard-shelled nuts long branches to pull down branches of ripe fruit leaves to make sponges, they chew the leaves to make them soft and then use them to soak up water to drink In The Zoo, Belfast, it costs around £300 per week to feed the Chimpanzees with lots of fresh fruit and veg! What’s a monkey’s favourite fruit? Gra-apes!!!! Or maybe they prefer bananas! What is made from two banana skins? A pair of slippers!!!! Play some feeding-time fruity fun games! Who’s the Zoo Keeper? Equipment: 3 plastic or cardboard bananas o Choose 3 Beavers to be Zoo keepers and give each a banana o The remainder of the Colony are very hungry monkeys! Sitting in a circle on the floor, they make monkey noises, raise one arm and close their eyes o Choose only one Zoo keeper to give a monkey a banana! o Then the 3 Zoo keepers place their hands behind their backs, the ‘monkeys’ open their eyes and the one holding the banana has to guess which Zoo keeper ‘fed them’! The ‘monkey’ can only guess once, if correct the monkey and Zoo keeper change places.

ISSN-1040-3027, Vol. 39, No. 1 May 2012 ™ News p A free-living long-tailed macaque at the Angkor Wat temple, Cambodia Inside... IPPL’s Biennial Meeting: Your Passport to Primate Protection! A Letter from IPPL’s Executive Director Shirley McGreal Dear IPPL Friend, The three days of this year’s biennial conference at IPPL Headquarters were wonderful days for staff, visiting supporters, speakers, and volunteers. We had gorgeous weather. The grounds looked wonderful, and we had lots of newly-planted trees, shrubs, and flowering plants. It took a while, but finally we lined up a great program with speakers from around the world. Getting visas and tickets was a little more hectic than usual. It was wonderful to meet old friends of IPPL like Edwin Wiek and Ofir Drori, whom I’d met at wildlife conferences. Ofir was very excited that his bookThe Last Great Ape had just been published. After the conference he went to Atlanta, where he appeared on CNN. Edwin Wiek of Thailand was eager to get animals seized in a recent violent raid on his sanctuary by Thai wildlife officials returned. It was a delight to meet Franck Chantereau of the J.A.C.K. Sanctuary (Jeunes Animaux Confisqués au Katanga/Young Animals Confiscated in Katanga). The facility is located in the city of Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The sanctuary was born of tragedy when fire took the lives of several young chimpanzees. But, rather than give up, Franck and his wife Roxane went on to found an excellent sanctuary with a strong educational component.

  • State of the Apes: Killing, Capture, and Trade Webinar Video Transcript
State of the Apes: Killing, Capture, and Trade Webinar Video Transcript May 11, 2021 Asha Tanna: Hello, and welcome to the latest webinar commissioned by the Arcus Foundation, examining the issues threatening the survival of nonhuman ape populations in Africa and Asia. "State of the Apes: Killing, Capture, Trade, and Conservation" is the fourth volume published by Cambridge University Press. My name is Asha Tanna. I'm a broadcast journalist and primatologist, and I'll be your host. Asha: The displacement of wildlife from natural habitats and the handling of wildlife in human environments makes all species more susceptible to disease. Never in history has this been more apparent than right now as we live through a health pandemic. The killing, capture, and trade in endangered and critically endangered apes, as well as other biodiversity, are not only driving them towards extinction but also impacting the health of our planet as ecosystems are disrupted. This series will specifically be exploring the threats to all nonhuman great ape and gibbon populations. All species are important, of course, but charismatic megafauna like chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans, and gibbons are emotionally appealing apes, and they help to focus and raise awareness about conservation efforts. In turn, this then benefits not only other biodiversity in those regions but the local communities who live side-by-side with them. Humans are scientifically classified as great apes. Studies of chimpanzees in Africa have also contributed significantly to our understanding of human evolution and behavior. The future of these primates lies in our hands. "State of the Apes" aims to provide insight as well as potential strategies to try to stem the demand and supply of apes.

  • Ape Rescue Chronicle Three Times Per Year
Letter From the editor It has been a very eventful year celebrating our 25th anniversary. We have had many new arrivals at the park, our building and maintenance team have worked non-stop rebuilding, expanding, and improving many monkey and ape houses and enclosures, we continue to campaign and collect signatures for our Pet Trade Petition, we held numerous events celebrating our 25 years, our rehabilitation and release work in Vietnam continues, and we have received 3 awards this year, the last inducting Jim into the Dorset Hall of Fame. He would have been so happy with all of these achievements. Charity No. 1126939 We now have more than 57,000 signatures - up from 31,000 at the time of the last ARC!! Our target is 100,000 so please help us UK Charity No. 1115350 to get people to sign for the sake of all the monkeys currently kept in the legal British pet trade. The legal trade in primates as pets in Britain continues to be a big problem for us and more tragically for the hundreds of monkeys that are kept in solitary confinement as pets in Britain today. Please help us with our campaign to give ALL monkeys the legal right to specialist care by getting a copy of our Pet Trade Petition and collecting signatures from family, friends, colleagues, or schoolmates. Over the past few months many people have helped with our rescue and rehabilitation work by donating goods such as fruit, vegetables, nuts, dried fruit, seeds, dog biscuits, garlic, peanut butter, honey, jam, vitamins, fleece blankets, sheets, towels, blankets, duvet covers, curtains, hessian sacks, heavy dog toys, tub trugs, baskets, “really useful” boxes, fire hose, rope, ladders, un-used stamps, A PE R ESCUE C HRONICLE medical supplies, biscuits for the team here at the park, and hand made cards to be sold in the shop.

  • March 18, 2019 John Stamos C/O ICM Partners 10250 Constellation
March 18, 2019 John Stamos c/o ICM Partners 10250 Constellation Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90067 Dear Mr. Stamos, I am writing to you regarding comments from you and your wife in People Magazine indicating that you would like to get a live monkey to appear at your son’s Curious George-themed birthday party. Although we hope you were saying this in jest, it’s important you realize that while performing monkeys may seem amusing on the surface, exotic animals exploited for entertainment are victims of a highly unnatural life that negatively affects their wellbeing. Training and living conditions for animal “actors” can be incredibly stressful and even abusive. The simple fact that animals are not living in social groups with other monkeys and are forced to perform on cue in disorienting environments is reason enough to raise animal welfare concerns. Primates are not domestic animals and should not be roaming around people because of the health risks posed to both the non-human primates and the humans (just look up “pet monkey bites” to see the harm monkeys are capable of inflicting). You don’t want bites at your party! The exotic pet trade is deeply intertwined with the use of animals in entertainment. If you had a monkey at Billy’s party, your fans would receive the message that it’s easy, fun, and normal to have a monkey around. Science shows that the use of primates in entertainment makes people think they would be good pets, but this impression could not be further from reality. The use of performing primates is waning due to growing public awareness of the issues.

  • Personal Possession of Non-Human Primates
Approved by the AZA Board of Directors on July 21, 2015 Personal Possession of Non-Human Primates AZA Position The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) recognizes that personal possession of non-human primates has significant negative implications for animal welfare and health as well as public health and safety; therefore, in accordance with AZA’s Board-approved Policy on the Presentation of Animals, AZA does not support personal possession of non-human primates and encourages AZA member organizations not to participate in animal acquisition and transfer activities that may facilitate the personal possession of non-human primates(5). Rationale There are an estimated 15,000 privately owned, either as pets or service animals, non-human primates in the United States(35,85). Pets are typically viewed as domesticated animals kept by humans for pleasure and companionship. Non-human primate species most commonly kept in personal possession include marmosets, tamarins, lemurs, capuchins, squirrel monkeys, macaques, baboons, and chimpanzees(17,18,32,35,64,85). The general public can easily obtain non-human primate pets through online and newspaper advertisements, pet stores, and roadside attractions. In early 2014, the International Fund for Animal Welfare conducted an investigation and found a total of 33,006 endangered wildlife parts and products, from CITES I and II listed species, for sale via 280 online market places across 16 countries with more than half of the advertisements (including 397 for non-human primates) for live animals(37). Non-human primates are also sometimes kept in personal possession as service animals. In 2010, the Department of Justice modified the 1991 title III regulation, 28 CFR 36.104, under the Americans with Disabilities Act, stating that non-human primates will not be recognized as service animals(89).
