Fridays at 22.00 have been another troublesome time period this season. CBS’ highest profile failure, Dr. Vegas, was cancelled despite high hopes that the popularity of series st a r , Rob Lowe, could transcend the creative difficulties behind the scenes. The network will debut a new series, Numb3rs, in Dr. Vegas’ time slot on January 23. Numbers is about an FBI agent who recruits his mathematical genius brother to help solve crimes. Sa t u r day nights are another difficult night for broadcasters. This season, Saturdays at 20.00 has been a succession of repeats, which will change on January 8 when a new reality series, The Will, debuts. At 21.00 is Crimetime Saturda y , which is a rotation of repeats of successful drama series, such as CSI. At 22.00 is the newsmagazine 48 Hours Mysteries. Now that CBS has found a combination that works, Sundays are the same this season as last. The evening begins at 19.00 with new programme 60 Minutes, followed by Cold Case at 20.00 and the CBS Sunday Night Movie from 21.00-23.00.

Fu t u r e Development CBS is poised to enter the 2005-2006 season in an enviable position. Aside from a few time periods that need to be addressed, the network has assembled a solid, coherent collection of shows, particularly with dramas. Although they have been criticised for its conservative ap p r oach to reality programming, it has disproved the naysayers by building successful rea l i t y franchises and by creating scripted series that perform well in . The only area where CBS is vulnerable is in comedy. With Everybody Loves Raymond in its final season and no new hit comedies from this season, success on Monday nights could be less of a given next season. Th e r e are a few new shows already in the potential pipeline for next season. On the rea l i t y fr ont, In The Cut is a new series commitment, which will star fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger hosting a competition between 16 aspiring designers.
