The Atlas: UBC Undergraduate Journal of World History | 2004 The Role of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the Early History of Vancouver ROBERT SOMMERS British Columbia’s entry into Confederation in 1871 was contingent upon the construction of a national railway. For the rest of that decade, however, the debate raged as to where the terminus would be, with the province’s two leading urban centres, New Westminster and Victoria, vying for the prize. At that time, the town where Vancouver stands today was known as Granville or Gastown, and was full of impassable forests, was a remote location, and had land so cheap that it traded for a dollar an acre. Finally, in 1882, when Burrard Inlet was announced as the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) terminus, Port Moody went wild with land speculation. However, the provincial government had other plans. Desiring an extension of the railway all the way to Coal Harbour, the province made the CPR an offer it could not refuse: more than ten square miles (6458 acres) of land in return for an extension of the rail line and for CPR construction of works and docks by the railroad terminus. The Canadian Pacific, led by William Cornelius Van Horne, quickly agreed. It wanted to extend its line anyway because Port Moody lacked sufficient room for the railway to operate: it did not own an acre outside of the limited rail yard and the Second Narrows was not considered a safe passage for ships. The CPR thus became the richest landowner in town, the speculative land market in Port Moody immediately collapsed – only to rise in Granville – and Gastown boomed, becoming a city on April 6, 1886. -

Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze the dispersion of architectural types within the Willamette Valley revealed trends amongst the extant settlement architecture samples. Brownsville, Oregon, was identified to have a locally-specific architectural subtype, the closer study of which enabled deeper investigation of the development of architectural landscapes during the Willamette Valley’s settlement period. -

Publication Number: M-617 Publication Title: Returns from U.S. Military Posts, 1800-1916 Date Published: 1968 RETURNS FROM U.S. MILITARY POSTS, 1800-1916 On the 1550 rolls of this microfilm publication, M617, are reproduced returns from U.S. military posts from the early 1800's to 1916, with a few returns extending through 1917. Most of the returns are part of Record Group 94, Records of the Adjutant General's Office; the remainder is part of Record Group 393, Records of United States Army Continental Commands, 1821-1920, and Record Group 395, Records of United States Army Overseas Operations and Commands, 1898-1942. The commanding officer of every post, as well ad commanders of all other bodies of troops such as department, division, brigade, regiment, or detachment, was required by Army Regulations to submit a return (a type of personnel report) to The Adjutant General at specified intervals, usually monthly, on forms provided by that office. Several additions and modifications were made in the form over the years, but basically it was designed to show the units that were stationed at a particular post and their strength, the names and duties of the officers, the number of officers present and absent, a listing of official communications received, and a record of events. In the early 19th century the form used for the post return usually was the same as the one used for regimental or organizational returns. Printed forms were issued by the Adjutant General’s Office, but more commonly used were manuscript forms patterned after the printed forms. -

Johnson County Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum National Register of Historic Places Walking and Driving Tour The Johnson County Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum presents this driving tour for your enjoyment. Johnson County contains 25 National Register of Historic Places sites. This tour will be divided into three areas: Buffalo, southern Johnson County, and northern Johnson County. Learn why these sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Be advised that when you are driving the southern and northern Johnson County sections, you are traveling in rural areas. There are no services except in Buffalo, Sheridan, and Kaycee—be sure to pack a lunch and plenty of liquids. Begin at the Johnson County Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum, located at 100 Fort Street, Buffalo, Wyoming. BUFFALO HISTORICAL SITES Carnegie Public Library (Johnson County Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum) Built in 1909, this Andrew Carnegie Library was the original location of the Johnson County Library. Andrew Carnegie, a Gilded Age industrialist, believed that education had the power to lift people out of poverty. By the time he died in 1919, Carnegie had donated over $56 million to build 2,509 libraries. Costing $12,500, the building is “Neoclassical” in style, with levels of contrasting color native stone, a porch with two slender Norman-style columns, and an apse on the north side. When the library moved to its current location in the 1980s, the Johnson County Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum acquired the old library building and connected its two buildings with a link in 2006. Walk to the corner of Main Street and Fort Street where the Johnson County Courthouse is located.
