Liverpool-born Gary Ablett, who played for both of the city’s teams during his 16-year career, would have turned 50 years of age today.

Ablett - the only player in history to win the FA Cup with both Liverpool and Everton - passed away in 2012 after a battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

He started his career for Liverpool, making his debut in 1985 before being sold to rivals Everton for £750,000 in 1992.

Though despite making the transition from red to blue, he was still held in high regard by fans of both teams and tributes flooded in for the 46-year-old father of three following his death.

Speaking at the time, former Everton manager paid tribute to the defender, who he signed 20 years before.

“He was a tremendous worker and a good defender," said Kendall. "I took him to Sheffield United as well.

“He was a consistent player. He had a great career in football and made a big contribution to football.

“I will remember Gary as a really good footballer," said Molby. "He was a very good reader of the game, a good passer and always used the ball well.

“Off the field he was a quiet guy, he was a family man. He loved the fact that he had made it as a footballer because that was all he had ever wanted to do."

His funeral was held at the Anglican cathedral in the city centre and had a big turnout, including then managers and , along with Rafa Benitez, and .

Indeed, it is a sign of his lasting impact on that earlier this year it was announced that a new block of city-centre student flats would be named after him.

Ablett, who also appeared for Derby, Hull, Sheffield United, Birmingham, Wycombe and Blackpool, had later roles on the coaching staff at both Everton and Liverpool.

He was diagnosed with his cancer in July 2010, just after starting a coaching role at Ipswich town. Ablett was survived by his wife Jacqueline and five children Scarlett, Reece, Riley, Fraser and Josh.
