Shag Rag May 2013

A Proud Member of: Shag Rag May 2013 Vol. XIX, No. 5

Dedicated to the Preservation of the Carolina Shag and Beach Music PRESIDENT’S CORNER by Dave Bushey May flowers are upon us! And with that, we get Gold Cup races, graduation parties, proms, Wine Tastings and Cinco de Mayo! Yes! NVSC’s picnic is upon us. We’re returning to The Fairfax Hunt Club this coming Sunday for an afternoon of margaritas, hamburgers and dancing. Is that a good combination? Well, we’ll see! Check your Hello Shaggers and this Shag Rag for details. April has passed us by, and the stories from the Spring Safari SOS are wonderful. If you don’t know about SOS in North Myrtle Beach, ask a veteran of the Club. Fall Migration is only four and a half months away! In just eleven weeks, NVSC’s Capital Classic will be upon us. This is a BIG Weekend of dancing and partying, folks! Sam and Lisa West are coming to teach several workshops and show-case the Shag. Sam is the current 2013 National Shag Dance Champion in the Pro Division with his competitive partner Leslie Jennings. The Junior Shag Dance Team – Shag Time 2, is also coming! This is a very special treat for Northern Virginia. 16 Junior Shaggers are coming to strut their stuff! And some of them show some moves that even Sam can’t perform! This year, The Capital Classic is a Reunion Weekend. NVSC was founded 20 years ago, so we’re celebrating with a -day event. There will be Free Pours on both Friday and Saturday (!), dance workshops on Saturday and Sunday (with the ‘kids’ leading!), 4 NVSC-veteran DJ’s, including Jim Rose who is the current President of The Association of Beach and Shag Club DeeJays AND some 16 hours of dancing! (Well, maybe YOU can dance that long. But NOT me). Many of the Founders of NVSC have committed to returning to Northern Virginia for the weekend as well as some special guests! It will be special! On more of a business note, there was a General Membership meeting on April 24, 2013. Some By-Law Revisions were passed, and the Revised By-Laws will be posted shortly to the website. Take a peek. There was a good deal of discussion during the meeting on some other proposed revisions, but they were not passed. Democracy in action, folks! It’s a Good Thing! Thanks to all our Club members who take it seriously. See you on the dance floor!

How did you discover the 86th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® Northern Virginia Shag Club? (This is the first of a series of articles about our Oldies Rock ‘n Roll Dance members’ experience in joining us.) Presented by the Yesterday’s Cruisers Saturday, May 4, 2013 In 2010, Betty Robey heard about shag dancing at JW & Friends. The thought of starting into 8 p.m. to midnight something she had not experienced was Winchester Moose, 215 E. Cork Street mitigated by the attractiveness of free lessons. That, plus the demeanor of the people who were Event Sponsor there to shag dance convinced her that it was a Best Care Home Care comfortable environment, where everyone was quite pleasant and encouraging. So Betty got hooked on shag dancing. Then a friend of hers suggested that they attend one of the NVSC The Original Rhondels sessions at Rene’s, where Betty found an even Formerly Bill Deal and The Rhondels larger number of shaggers, and she became a playing 50s, 60s to the mid-70s member. with some beach music. Betty worked in a physician’s office. One day she was conversing with a patient about every- day matters and their talk led to leisure-time activities. The patient, Mary Taylor, was impressed by Betty’s enthusiasm about shag dancing and agreed to meet her at JWs at the next session. She found every claim of Betty’s to be true, and then started going to the NVSC weekly dances at Icon’s, joining the club in $25 Per Person Tickets may be purchased at March, 2012. www.thebloom.com, Winchester Moose and the Betty and Mary were not avid dancers before Festival Store, 107 Millwood Ave becoming aware of shag dancing. They each had danced the jitterbug as a teenager, but that Next to the Final Yard Fabric was all. So here they are later in life enjoying dancing again. Full Bar Available Food and Soft Drinks Available Smoke free dance with designated smoke areas outside. This experience most likely shows that “word Proper ID Required NO COOLERS OR BYOB of mouth” is how our membership grows, but moreover, the pleasant environment and This event is an Officially Sanctioned Event produced under the camaraderie convinces newcomers that joining trademark Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® NVSC is worth it.

Welcome to our You think it can’t get better, but it does. As always, it is our favorite New Members party of the year. Thank you for the workshops, party, and of course Joe Capobianco Linda Szyszka our home away from home, the Rodger’s house. It is wonderful to see a Kathleen McCann Patricia Tope shag club work so hard for their shag club and for the dance we love so Don Szyszka much. We get to work hard, but we feel that we have made so many good friends. You have made such a force on the dance, it really shows in your members. Thank you, again, we treasure every year that we have been. Hope to see everyone on the dance floor soon. Please come visit us at SOS. Sincerely, Jackie and Charlie

Recipe (From Donna Romito) BAKED ZITI WITH SPINACH, SAUSAGE, AND TOMATOES (Offer this simple, hearty dish with a green salad, crusty garlic bread, and a red wine like Pinot Noir)

¾ pound of mild Italian sausage (or hot if 1 cup of grated parmesan or preferably Parmigiano Reggiano preferred), casings removed 10 oz. of ziti pasta cooked al dente 1 medium onion, chopped 3 cups of fresh spinach leaves (6 oz. package) 3 large garlic cloves, chopped 6 oz. mozzarella cheese, cubed 1 28-ounce can of diced tomatoes ¼ cup of pesto sauce

Using a large saucepan over medium-high heat, cook sausage, onion and garlic and sauté until sausage is cooked through, breaking up the meat into bite-sized chunks (about 10 minutes). Add the can of tomatoes (including the liquid) to the pan and simmer until the sauce thickens slightly, stirring occasionally (again, about 10 minutes). Stir in pesto and season sauce with salt, pepper, and basil leaves and bring to a simmer. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly oil a 9 x 13 glass baking dish. Combine pasta, spinach, mozzarella and 1/3 cup of the grated cheese in a large bowl. Stir in the hot sauce. If it appears to be dry, add a ½ jar of sauce, e.g., Classico. Transfer mixture to the baking dish and sprinkle the remaining 2/3 cup of grated cheese over it. Bake covered until the sauce bubbles and the cheeses melt – about 30 minutes.

Fender Skirts and Rat Finks (Author Unknown) If you do not know what these terms mean or what they describe, ask some old geezer. Terms I haven't heard in a long time, and thinking about 'fender skirts' started me thinking about other words that quietly disappeared from our vocabulary with hardly a notice like 'curb feelers.' And 'steering knobs.' (AKA) 'suicide knob.' Since I'd been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that direction first. Remember 'Continental kits?' They were rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool looking as a Lincoln Continental. When did we quit calling them 'emergency brakes? At some point 'parking brake' became the proper term. But I miss the hint of drama that went with 'emergency brake.' I'm sad, too, that almost all the old folks are gone who would call the accelerator the 'foot feed.' Many today do not even know what a clutch is or that the dimmer switch used to be on the floor. Kids would wait at the street corner for their daddy to come home, so they could ride the 'running board' up to the house? Here's a phrase I heard all the time in my youth but never anymore — 'store-bought.' Of course, just about everything is store-bought these days, few things are 'homemade.' But once it was bragging material to have a store-bought dress or a toy. 'Coast to coast' is a phrase that once held all sorts of excitement and now means almost nothing. Now we take the term 'worldwide' for granted. On a smaller scale, 'wall-to-wall' was once a magical term in our homes. In the '50s, everyone covered his or her hardwood floors with, wow, wall-to-wall carpeting! Today, everyone replaces their wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. Go figure. When was the last time you heard the quaint phrase 'in a family way ?' It's hard to imagine that the word 'pregnant' was once considered a little too graphic, a little too clinical for use in polite company, so we had all that talk about stork visits and 'being in a family way' or simply 'expecting.' Apparently 'brassiere' is a word no longer in use. I said it the other day and my neighbor cracked up. I guess it's just 'bra' now. 'Unmentionables' probably wouldn't be understood at all. I always loved going to the 'picture show,' but I considered 'movie' an affectation. Most of these words go back to the '50s, but here's a pure '60s word I came across the other day 'rat fink.' Ooh, what a nasty put-down! Here's a word I miss — 'percolator.' That was just a fun word to say. And what was it replaced with 'Coffee maker.' How dull . . . Mr. Cof- fee, I blame you for this. I miss those made-up marketing words that were meant to sound so modern and now sound so retro. Words like' DynaFlow' and 'Electrolux.' Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with 'SpectraVision!' Food for thought. Was there a telethon that wiped out lumbago? Nobody complains of that anymore. Maybe that's what Castor oil cured, because I never hear mothers threatening kids with Castor oil anymore. Some words aren't gone, but are definitely on the endangered list. The one that grieves me most is 'supper.' Now everybody says 'dinner.' Save a great word. Invite someone to supper. Discuss fender skirts and curb feelers. I will always call it supper. By the way, "Google" or "Wikipedia" the phrase "The Last Dinner" and it will correct you.

Humor

The company president sent a sedan driver to the airport to pick up a businessman from out of town. When driving back to the company, as they approached an intersection, the traffic light turned red, but the driver went right through it. The visitor said: "Hey, you just went through a red light!" The driver responded: "Its OK, my brother does it all the time." A bit further they approached another intersection and that light turned red, but the driver just kept on going. The visitor exclaimed: "You just went through another red light," and the driver said: "Don't worry, my brother does it all the time!" After another few blocks a light turned green at the intersection and the driver slammed on his brakes. The visitor said: "What in the heck are you doing?" The driver replied: "My brother might be coming!"
