Letter from Revd Canon Sue Oliver
Dear friends across the Parishes, November is a month for remembering....
The month begins with All Saints Day, November 1st. This is the day when the church remembers all the saints; those of long ago like Peter and Paul, apostles;( whose churches I visited recently in Rome) like Francis, Benedict and Dominic, founders of monasticism in Western Europe; like Cecilia and Lucy, women honoured for their witness in music and faith. Also though, we remember more recent saints, Oscar Romero the Archbishop in El Salvador who was killed whilst praying and Mother Teresa who helped the poor in India. And in this remembering we hope to become more like them, putting serving God and others before ourselves. Our Churches will celebrate All Saints Day on Sunday morning November 3rd. In the afternoon in Blakedown, at 6.30 we commemorate All Souls Day, traditionally November 2nd, when we remember any of the dead, our loved ones now gone from our lives but not our hearts. At 6.30pm that night Gerry Dyer will lead a gentle service when all the names of those put on lists at the back of all our churches will be read out with Do put names on the lists. And if you do, please come along to the service in Blakedown Church. In Belbroughton Church on November 17th at 4.30 pm there will be another similar but different service. This is when the relatives of everyone who has had a service in the last year will be written to and invited to attend the service led by Pauline Jones, Andy Hewines and Kim Topham. In this remembering, in both churches, we are giving thanks for their love and care, their lives. On November 10th we shall be celebrating Remembrance Sunday across the Holy Cross South Group. This is when we remember the sacrifice of their lives of all those young and not so young men of our villages who died in those Wars that should have ended all wars. Perhaps if we had all remembered, we would not be living in a world now when war continues and threats of war increase. In this remembering we are honouring their sacrifice and pledging to promote peace. In this month too we need to remember to make our Christmas cakes and puddings....they should be made at least 4 weeks before Christmas so as to mature nicely. This remembering helps us to celebrate Christmas when it comes in a traditional way. Even if you don’t make them ourselves but buy them from the supermarkets....try making one on Stir Up Sunday which is on Sunday November 24th. This is my Christmas Pudding recipe...do you have another one? Mix together in a big bowl: 300g fresh breadcrumbs; 250g soft brown sugar; 250g currants; 250g sultanas; 300g raisins;60g chopped peel;300g vegetable suet; half a level teaspoon of salt;1 level teaspoon of mixed spice; the grated rind of a lemon. Mix together: 1 dessertspoon of lemon juice; 2 large eggs, beaten; 150ml of milk; 300ml of Guinness (a half pint bottle).

Add the liquids to the dry ingredients and mix well. Let the mixture rest for half a day. Then divide it between all the well buttered basins you have! Cover tightly each basin with pleated greaseproof paper and foil. The mixture makes enough for one big and lots of little basins. Steam them for up to 7 hours. Then re- cover them and store in a cool place or freeze. On Christmas day, defrost them if necessary or reheat in the microwave. Remember...oh and there’s bonfire night too but let’s move on from that! Enjoy your sparklers. Letter from the Bishop of Worcester
Together with the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Birmingham, Bernard Longley, I recently led an ecumenical pilgrimage to Rome, accompanied by 20 Anglican and 20 Roman Catholic pilgrims. One of the highlights was a general audience of the Pope in St Peter’s Square.There were many thousands of people at that audience, as there are every Wednesday morning, but we were very fortunate to be singled
out and warmly greeted by the Pope who asked us for our prayers for him. ‘Don’t forget!’ he added. At the heart of such audiences is a simple Bible study, given by the Pope in Italian and translated into a number of languages. On this occasion he reflected on the occasion recounted in Acts 8 when the apostle Philip met the Ethiopian who was reading a passage from the prophet Isaiah. As he said: ‘Yet, without a guide, he is unable to understand its full meaning. Philip explains to him how the Old Testament prophecies reach their fulfilment in Christ. As a result, the Ethiopian professes his faith in Jesus, and asks to be baptised. From the baptismal waters he emerges no longer a stranger, but a member of the Body of Christ. The dialogue in this encounter reveals to us the key to reading the Scriptures: namely, Christ. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will strengthen all the baptised to follow the example of Philip in bearing witness to the saving power of the Gospel and bringing others to Jesus.’ May we remember that the key to understanding the scriptures is Jesus and bring others to him by witness to the saving power of the Gospel recorded in them. +John Parish churches

Every year the Worcestershire Mothers’ Union provides presents for children who are visiting their father in prison at Christmas. We try to provide suitable new, not secondhand, gifts for all ages, but presents for teenage children are particularly appreciated as we receive far fewer of those. However, if you would like to give a gift this year a present for a child of any age would be most welcome. November is the month of remembrance, of people gone before. We have All Saints day and All Souls day this month as well as Remembrance Day. I personally am remembering my mother who died November 1983 aged 54 and who would have been 90 this year. From the bellringers perspective we are remembering one of our supporters who died the week I write this – Jenny Billington – wife of ringer Don. Don started ringing about 19 years ago and Jenny has been there for us ever since. She was the wonder behind our flower decorations. My attempt this year was a tribute to the one and only lesson I had from her. She also did the flowers at my wedding with some anxiety and panic. She has been at the social functions she enjoyed – barbecues, New Years Eve and those she didn’t – quizzes. We will miss her very much. When we have had a chance to get organised we will ring a quarter peal (approximately 40minutes solid) in her memory – hopefully before you read this!

KITCHEN CORNER
KALE PACKED MAC ‘N’ CHEESE
Ingredients:
250g kale, thick stalks removed 250g macaroni 1 leek, sliced 25g butter 25g plain flour 350ml semi skimmed milk 150g cheddar cheese, grated 2 tsp English mustard
Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 200 C 2. Cook the kale in a large pan of boiling water for 3 minutes, remove with a slotted spoon and cool under cold water, squeeze out the excess liquid. Add the macaroni to the boiling water and cook for 9-10 minutes, adding the leek for the last 2 minutes. Drain well and return to the pan. 3. Meanwhile, melt the butter in a small pan, stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Off the heat gradually blend in the milk, then bring to the boil, stirring until thickened. Stir in 100g cheese and the mustard, season well. 4. Stir the sauce into the macaroni with the kale and transfer to an ovenproof serving dish, sprinkle with remaining cheese and bake for 25 minutes until golden.

We welcome back Roger Umpleby for our November meeting. After what has been a summer of mixed weather a news report in August said Britain was experiencing an above average summer for butterflies so we should look forward to a very interesting and informative meeting.
Looking Back September
On Friday 27th of September we were entertained by Mr John Guest chairman of Midland Region NVS. On a talk entitled “Many Hats” we heard about John’s early years and his minor scrapes with the local bobby. Laughable by today's standards what was once considered a misdemeanour. John continued to tell us about his working life after school including working as a gardener and chauffeur and also many years as a retained fire fighter while his main job was with Brintons.
Always able to find an occupation he became a regular farther Christmas for Webb's nurseries and also for the Severn Valley Railway at Arley. John had us oohing and ahhing at his many stories throughout his very varied career.
A very enjoyable evening and a something different too. Many thanks John.

In the early 1990’s an author, who wrote about scarecrows suggested to the north Worcestershire village of Belbroughton that a weekend of scarecrows, made by the people and put outside their houses, could be fun and raise money for the village. The rest is history as it grew way beyond what anyone could have imagined. I made Belbroughton my home tower in 2000, taking over from Tony Palmer as tower Captain in 2001. Having taught the band from scratch for the millennium, Tony retired to Malvern to rest on his laurels. At that point there were, I think, tower tours during the scarecrows weekend. This is a chance to go up the tower and see the terrific view with stops on the way up to admire the clock, put in to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and to peek through the wire netting door at number 4 bell or, if keen, to look down at the treble. In about 2003, one of our band had the bright idea of letting people chime a bell for 50p. Belbroughton is a ground floor ring – no nasty steps to put people off – so it would be relatively easy to control. It was to be strictly regulated as there were dancers and music outside the church and it also had to fit around the tower tours. We thought it would be of limited appeal, but boy were we wrong! It was an immediate smash hit and every scarecrow weekend since it’s been all hands-on deck and keep that weekend free! I spent the week before designing a scarecrow and doing a flower decoration (lilies as bells with kebab sticks as a tower). Then, on Saturday 21st September, walk the mile over the fields to get to Belbroughton for 10.30 and sort out, ropes, tower notices, etc. The queue was forming before I’d done anything much and the 11am start was brought forward quite a bit. Our merry band of ringers then spent until 3pm non-stop chiming with people, showing them how and letting them get on with it. This year was easier than most, we had more people around all the time so could even manage on orderly lunch, although I didn’t get further than the churchyard so missed a lot of the scarecrow activities. Once started there is no let up. I think chiming must be one of the most popular events because people come back year after year, or so they tell me. Everyone from 18-months (with parental supervision) to 70+ year olds. Giving people a long enough go and keeping out of the way of photos as much as possible is key. So is crowd control! We have to put up notices to stop people just charging in and keeping the queue functional. This year a young man announced he had rung many years ago and grabbed the tenor rope in a very amateur fashion to ring it up – he was most put out when he was stopped immediately. The over excited 10 to 12-year olds need watching too! In past years there has been a service at 3.30 so we could say we need to stop (as the queue is still out of the door) to do proper ringing, also an opportunity to demonstrate what we really do. We do tell them all that chiming is hard work and normal ringing, with the bell rather than against it, is much easier. This year there was no Saturday service but we did stop at 3pm, pointing out that we had to do it all again on Sunday. When Sunday came the weather was worse but there were always people ready to have a go. I worked out that over the weekend nearly 700 people had a go at chiming. If they showed enough interest they were given a quick closely supervised go at backstroke. I can work out the number fairly accurately as we raised £347.50 mainly in fifty pences (inflation hasn’t made an appearance here yet) as there were very few tower tours this year. We have occasionally recruited ringers at the scarecrows weekends but most visitors are from outside the village and it can be a bit depressing as we ask “where from?” and people say “Sutton Coldfield”, “Solihull”, “Bournemouth”, “Shrewsbury”, etc. Still it’s nice to think that other towers may have benefited from our efforts. 11

The Parish News November 2019 Walking home across the fields is like walking into Harry Potter’s maze – sudden silence the moment I’m on the footpath out of the church yard. Back to collapse with a glass of wine would have been nice but the W&DCRA Northern Branch AGM took place on Saturday. Thankfully we went to friends for dinner on Sunday night. The following Tuesday evening practice was gentle as we all rediscovered our upper abdominal muscles and triceps are felt hard done by. And back into normality until next year. Belbroughton’s Late C19th Postal Service By the 1880s, Belbroughton had a flourishing postal and telegraph service. Alexander Graham Bell may have invented the telephone, but it was not to make its appearance in the village for another few years. Kelly’s 1888 Directory records that John Bate was then the sub-postmaster and ran the ‘Post, Money Order & Telegraph Office, Savings Bank, Annuity & Insurance Office’. It goes on to record that ‘Letters arrive from Stourbridge at 7.15 a.m. & 2.40 p.m.; despatched at 9 a.m. and 6.15 p.m.’ A document in our archives, describing Stourbridge Rural Posts in 1880 and 1889, gives more detail, even if it is somewhat difficult to interpret in places. In 1889 we read, ‘The Posts work, - from the arrival of the Birmingham Mail Van at 3.42 A.M., and to the despatch of the Wolverhampton Van at 9.5 P.M.’ It took approximately an hour for the post to travel between Stourbridge and Belbroughton, with stops at Old Swinford, Pedmore, Hagley, Clent, Holy Cross and Belbroughton. In 1880, the Belbroughton sub-postmaster’s salary was £13 13s, but by 1889 it had gone up to £20 19s. Perhaps the volume of mail had increased? In 1889 annual salaries were stipulated for the different postal rounds, and it is clear that the sub-postmaster was expected to employ one or two postmen, to help with the work, not surprising given the distances involved. The 1889 postal rounds were as follows: 1. Hartell; Bell Hall; Bell End; Caldingham Villa; Madeley; Bank House Farm; Bell Heath; The Fen; Stoney Bridge; Mearse Lane; Lawn Barn; Hagley Hill. (3 hours, salary £18 5s)) 2. The Village (part of); Yew Tree House; The Furlongs; Furlongs Farm; The Laurels; Giles Farm; Moorhall Cottages; Munches Cottages; Gorse Farm; Gorse Green; Hollies Hill; Branthill. (2 hours, salary £12 3s 3d) 3. The Village (part of); Bradford House; The Lydiate. (2 ½ hours with 4 below, salary £15 12s) 4. The Village; Bradford House; The Lydiate; Springfield; Yew Tree House; Field House; The Furlongs; The Breach. Belbroughton Sorting Office was also responsible for serving: Weybridge; Drayton Villa; Sion House; Hill Pool (Forges)Drayton, W.B.; Drayton House; Broome Hill. (Salary £24 6s 8d.) The postal service was provided seven days a week, although times on Sundays might be slightly differ. It also included collections. The Post Office was in the High Street, and was a thriving family business. John Bate combined his work as sub-postmaster with that of stationer and photographer. He was already in post in 1871, and according to the 1891 census, he was assisted by his daughters Bertha, a post office clerk, and Eleanor, aged only 15, as a telegraph messenger. Traffic Order: 2019-113: Church Road, Belbroughton - proposed Prohibition of Waiting at Any Time and No Stopping 8am-4.30pm
Council responded to this County Council proposal, agreeing with it and the desire of improving traffic flows and the safety of children. The proposal will go out to public consultation and depending upon the results the ‘Order’ will be implemented next Spring. A copy of the proposal is on the Parish Council’s website and is also available from the clerk.
New Councillor Mr Gez Ingram was co-opted onto the Parish Council at the October meeting. The Chairman warmly welcomed him back. There remain two vacancies in the Fairfield ward and if you are interested in the role of parish councillor please contact the clerk. This is your opportunity to shape the future of the community. Application forms can be found on the website or posted to you.
The Green, Belbroughton With the drainage works completed (on time) by the adjacent developer in Hartle Lane, the Parish Council will now be planting eight new trees towards the boundary to the new housing development. These being to replace the hornbeam ‘hedge’ which previously backed onto the factory buildings.
Little Bell Hall Pool, Drayton Rd. Belbroughton The logistics and costs of refilling the pool will be assessed, taking advice from North Worcestershire Water Management.
Waste Bin – Grit bins A new dog waste bin will be sited in Middle Road, Wildmoor. The Parish Council owned grit bins – the green ones! are refilled and are ready for resident use, on the roads this winter.
Lighting - Belbroughton Councillors decided not to put in lighting on the footpath between the school and the Recreation Centre.
Parish Upkeep Cllrs. Simon Nock, Sue Pawley, Barb Allington and Ade Homer are to review the schedules of maintenance of both Parish Council owned land and the parish area generally. The aim being to improve and maintain the tidiness of the parish.
Facebook Council decided not to have a Facebook page, but would review the position in six months.
Council Meeting dates The next Council meetings are on 4th November, taking place in the Jubilee Room, Belbroughton Recreation Centre and then on 2nd December when we meet in the Fairfield First School. All residents are welcome to attend, the meetings start at 7.30 pm.
Community Engagement The Council holds an ‘Open Surgery’ session of up to 15 minutes at the beginning of full Council meetings to give residents the opportunity to meet and discuss any issues directly with their councillors.

AWARDS EVENING and a talk by ROGER UMPLEBY
The Annual Show was a great success and 61 Exhibits were staged and due to the multi dish classes meant there was a total of 88 dishes displayed. The BEST IN SHOW was awarded to the Exhibitor in the Class of 4 Dishes of Vegetables closely beating the Exhibit of 2 Dishes of Potatoes. The introduction of the new Class for Non Members / Visitors proved to be very popular, this Class was won by a lady who lives within the village, with a dish of 3 Beetroot of exceptional quality, a fact commented on by our National NVS Judge. This Class will be continued next year, the format will be confirmed early in 2020.
The Awards will be presented after the talk.
The talk will be by Roger Umpleby BSc MPhil Entomologist who previously spoke to us on how to deal with Pests and Diseases on vegetables, which was an interesting talk and it is anticipated that this time he will entertain and give us more useful information.

Our worship leader, Anne Harris, opened the meeting and gave a special welcome to Millie Steele and Jan Woolley – it was so good to see them. Among the notices given out by Anne was the annual request for Christmas gifts for the children of prisoners. Gifts for teenagers are particularly welcome; also, please could the gifts be new ones. Thank you. Anne introduced our speaker, Susan Price, who came to tell us of when she received the Maundy money from HM The Queen. Susan first learned of her invitation in a letter from Buckingham Palace in November 2017. Accompanied by one of her sons, Susan arrived at Windsor at 9.10am, in plenty of time for the service at 11.00am. The Queen arrived at 10.50am. Six Yeoman, in their splendid uniforms, carried gold salvers on which were placed the leather purses containing the Maundy money. The service itself was a shortened version of Matins and throughout the distribution the choir sang. Susan was amazed how tiny the Queen is. Susan had another surprise; someone had told the Queen that Susan’s father had sung in the choir at the coronation of George VI in 1937, and the Queen very kindly mentioned this to Susan. Susan had many photographs and a beautiful Order of Service, plus the Maundy purses. Apart from the Maundy money, Susan has many memories of a very special day. Anne thanked Susan for her talk and presented her with a plant. We then had tea with a lovely cake brought by Pauline, who celebrates her Golden Wedding with Peter on the 11th October. Everyone congratulated them and wishes them many more happy years together. Our next meeting is on Thursday 7th November at 2pm, when our speaker will be Jean Swift. Committee members: Please note there will be a committee meeting at 12 noon prior to the branch meeting.

The autumn term is going very well here at Clent Primary School. This year’s Harvest Festival was a great success and well supported by many families and friends of the school. We always love to see St Leonard’s full of smiling faces enjoying singing and sharing the service.
They experienced a wealth of creative activities focussed around the theme of ‘diversity’. The standard of the drama, dance, art and animation showcased by the children at the end of their time there was exceptional.
Finally, we are working hard to instil a love of reading in all of our children, so we are looking for volunteers. If you are able to spare ½ an hour a week to listen to our children read or discuss books with the older children we would love to hear from you. Please contact the school office on 01562 730668.

Our Lectures are over for this year but our last two meetings were very successful, I gave a talk about Clent Village in September and we had about 80 people turn up for a very informative and interesting evening, learning a little bit more about the hidden and lost parts of the village we all pass by so often.
Julian Hunt, who told us about William Shenstone and the Leasowes, delivered our October meeting. As always Julian is an expert on his subject, and we were all entertained with his Lecture. It was preceded with a short AGM and we now have a new Secretary joining the Committee so I would like to welcome Celia Nancarrow onto the team, we would still like to encourage new blood within the Society to keep it going strong so why not contact me to see if it is for you.

It is probably by now common knowledge that Mrs. Bristow has handed in her resignation as Matron of the Holy Cross Home a position she has held for Thirty-two years. One wonders what the Home and Village will be like without her for she has certainly played a noble part in both. Naturally her first love was for the Home and Children to whom she has given her best. Whoever succeeds her will never be quite like Miss Bristow who has given herself so completely in service for the Waifs and Strays Society. In this work she has proved to be extraordinarily gifted and fitted. During these years she has preformed a wonderful work, which will live in the lives of those whom she has so carefully trained in the tenets of the Christian faith. But Miss Bristow has also played her part in the life of the Village and of the Church where her presence will also be missed.
Another great loss to the Village is the departure of Mr. and Mrs. Hand who are going to live in Manchester. While we congratulate him heartily on his promotion, which we feel he is well deserved, we nevertheless regret his leaving us.
They have both been a tower of strength to the Scout and Guide movements. While the one made an ideal Scout Skipper, the other appeared to be the ideal Guide and Ranger Leader. The Village can ill afford to lose people of their kind. However we wish them God’s speed and every success and Happiness. ______
Even today we lose great contributors to the Village so that is why it is important to replace our societies with new up and coming great contributors, we all start off not quite knowing what we can give, but over time small efforts can make a “Big” difference. “Don’t just live in a Village be part of it.”

The 2019 Clent Flower Show (run jointly by the WI and Gardening Club) held on Saturday 7th September was a great success. The entries were up and it was good to see so many children involved this year. It is an excellent annual village event that involves many people from Clent and the surrounding area. All those who participate, those who come and admire and have tea and cake, and those who swell the coffers at the auction make the Show into a great village day. As the winter draws in, hopefully all the local vegetation will take a little rest! Our contractors have been busy this summer cutting back hedges, clearing footpaths and working hard to make sure the village footways remain passable. Some issues have had to be referred to landowners and we thank them for their attention. Our Youth Council have also been busy keeping the parish tidy by organising the village litter picks and keeping the Parish Council on its toes around play area improvements, particularly the football pitch which needs new goals and more robust surfacing. The Council would like to thank Lawrence Weston for his stirling work in supporting the Youth Council and wish him well in his future endeavours. Other issues that have come before the Parish Council recently include inconsiderate parking outside the school, a collapsed drainpipe causing problems on the football pitch and missing grit bins. Lastly, the Council would like to thank Caroline Howard who has stepped down from the Council due to work commitments. Caroline was an asset to the Council, particularly in supporting the Youth Council in its work and organising the village litter picks. Parish Council meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 7pm in the Parish Hall, Church Avenue. The Agenda for each meeting appears on our website and notice boards before the meeting. Gardening as a metaphor for Churches By Bill Wilson Spring 2014 And by kind permission from the Church Times Last month, I suggested that the metaphor of gardening is a worthy way of thinking about healthy congregational life in the 21st century. In considering the garden, I noted that healthy gardens live in a dynamic tension with the seasons, they are marked by good soil, and their context plays a key role in their design and composition. The parallels to congregational life are numerous and profound. This week, we turn our attention to the Gardener, for gardens only flourish under the watchful care of a gardener. Who is the gardener for the church? For the purposes of this analogy, let’s assume that Christ is the landlord owner of the garden/church, and has designated its care to those who inhabit the church. For the sake of this analogy, I will assume that the role of the gardener or caretaker is one that is shared by all who love the church: laity and clergy alike. It is a labour of love and calling. Hopefully, our stewardship will end on a more positive note than those who cared for the vineyard in the parable of Matthew 21. The gardener cares for the garden out of love and respect for what it is and can become. He/she gives time and energy out of sacrificial devotion to the potential they see in the garden. It is in the garden that the gardener finds fulfilment and meaning. It is not unusual to hear serious gardeners speak of their love of gardening as a passion and a spiritual exercise. It is in the garden that the gardener discovers what matters most and finds peace. The garden is a reminder to the gardener that the most beautiful and meaningful parts of life cannot be purchased, rushed or manipulated.
Design/Vision A beautiful garden emerges from someone’s dream translated into a plan, followed by an implementation process. Beautiful gardens, like all things, are created twice. First, they are created in the sanctified imagination of the gardener. The second creation takes place in the hard work of cultivating and building the garden. So it is with churches. A healthy congregation is one that can articulate its vision and is relentless in pursuing that dream. Clarity about the defining dream and design of the church is essential if it is to be healthy. Competing dreams and designs must be negotiated, or a congregation will find itself attempting the impossible task of being all things to all people. Every garden designer must make choices, as a single garden cannot satisfy the expectations of everyone. Neither can a single church. Both achieve their highest potential when they focus their resources upon a specific manifestation that honours the landlord’s intent and is coherent and appropriate.
Care Vibrant and productive gardens emerge when well cared for. The gardener knows that their role is that of caretaker, and that role is pivotal for the long-term health of the garden. Excellent gardeners pay attention to the details. They don’t cut corners. They are vigilant in their care for the garden, even when it is not convenient. Worthy clergy and church leaders put aside personal agendas and care deeply for their parishioners and those in their field of service.

Disease, pests and predators are part of life for every gardener. Life in a healthy garden is often about identifying unhealthy plants or pests and dealing proactively with them. In churches, the ability to spot and diagnose unhealthy spiritual practices and/or dysfunctional habits and dynamics is at the heart of ensuring a healthy future for the congregation. Caring for the congregation means identifying threats and responding appropriately. Patience Gardens require patience, and gardeners must learn to trust the plants and environment to produce the growth, fruit and beauty they so desire. Gardens have a rhythm and timetable that we must adapt to. Some things in a garden cannot be rushed, and to attempt to do so courts failure. Mature discipleship and effective ministry is a time-consuming, long-lasting process. Quick and easy answers to hard questions seldom hold up. Rather, it is the Christ-follower who waits patiently and wrestles with doubts and fears who finds a faith big enough for life. I love Bob Dale’s emphasis upon congregations who encourage deeper faith and sustainability in his book Cultivating Perennial Churches. Gardeners and congregational leaders know that time can be our friend, and that the reality of growth means the best days of our work may well be ahead of us. Such dreams keep us coming back to garden, and the church, again and again.

The weather was fine for a change and the outdoor activities were equally warm and welcoming. The wine flowed and the burgers burned to welcomed music of yesteryear. On the 23rd September Steve Smith came to our meeting to recieve a cheque and give a presentaion on the excellent work being done in Wollaston by DiscoverU which operates a social enterprise where the items made are sold to raise funds. Steve stated that Discover U is a charity working to help people with barriers into employment. He stated that everybody who wants to should have the opportunity to work be supported to do that with a wide range of programmes and opportunities. The aim is to provide work related experience to adults with some level of learning disability or others similarly disadvantaged because of physical disability. DiscoverU has a stall at Kingswinford market every Saturday and sell some of their items at various fairs and via Citizen Home gift shop in Birmingham. Steve commended the work being done within the community and welcomes the public who can drop in and see the work being done and items for sale. The month ended on the 30th Sepetember with a visit from our own District Governor Bala Jaspal, who commended the work being done at Hagley and the varied and active social program of the club. DG Bala expressed appreciation for the warm reception she recieved at Hagley and enjoyed the good humor and banter which the club is renouned for. Encouraging partners to participate regularly in the meeting was a unique and commendable policy for other clubs to adopt.
