President’s Report February 2010

The Games have finally arrived, and in the spirit of friendly competition, we thought we would update our members on where we stand versus our peers in some key areas from an FEI Canada perspective.

Did you know:

nd  The chapter ranks 2 year-to-date in attracting new members. Unfortunately, we’re 2nd to Toronto, so we have to rectify that! (Please refer to Jeff Champion’s membership update for details on the individuals who have joined our group this month)

 We added 5 new members in the month of January, which was tops in the country!

rd  We rank 3 in the country in overall membership retention.

 Event registrations are up! Our previous two events have each attracted just shy of 100 members, and we have more exciting events on the horizon.

The excitement in the Chapter, and our direction, continues to grow. As host of this year’s Victoria conference, with our ability to offer free conference registration to new members, it’s our time to shine in membership growth. If you know anyone who’s interested in becoming a member, please let any one of your Board members know.

As always, we welcome your ideas and feedback.

Should you wish to get more involved in the Chapter, please let us know!

GO CANADA GO!

Membership Report

The Olympics are finally upon us and apart from the unseasonably warm weather things are looking up. Things are looking up for the Vancouver chapter as well. We have 5 new members this months, please join me in welcoming:

Mr. Les Fovenyi , President of L.Fovenyi & Co. Inc. located in Vancouver.

Mr. Yale Loh, Treasurer of BC Hydro at their office in .

Mr. Peter C. Mitchell, Chief Financial Officer of Taseko Mines Ltd. with offices in Vancouver.

Ms. Maria Tsang, Chief Financial Officer of Sivercorp Metals Inc. located in Vancouver

Mr. Shakeel A. Velji, Chief Financial Officer of Kasian Architecture Interior design and Planning Ltd. with their office in downtown Vancouver.

Vancouver chapter will be hosting the FEI national conference which will be held in Victo- ria this year. One of the benefits of joining FEI is the ability to take in the conference as a new member while having conference registration fees waived.

Among other benefits, FEI offers peer networking opportunities, emerging issues alerts, as well as personal and professional development.

In the lead up to the conference please think of future FEI members. Bring someone who should be a member out to a meeting!

January 21st Event

Thursday January 21, the first Vancouver Chapter event of 2010 was held at the Pan Pacific Hotel in downtown Vancouver. Against a beautiful back-drop of and the North Shore mountains, Dr. Warren Jestin, Chief Economist at Scotiabank, presented to a crowd of over 100 members and guests. The topic - From Recession to Recovery - was discussed on a national, as well as local and regional, basis. Dr. Jestin departed from the typical 'slides and charts' approach that many economists employ, and regaled the assembled with various stories and anecdotal evidence to support his projections for 2010.

After many months of tough economic sledding, it is encouraging to hear confirmation that the worst is over and that , and specifically the Lower Mainland, is well- poised for the recovery stage. A key element to the next phase of our growth will be involve- ment/interaction with more international Emerging Markets than with Developed Nations, and expectations are for a more muted growth than has been experienced in the past. As the self- proclaimed "Gateway to the Pacific", British Columbia is well positioned to capitalize on busi- ness opportunities in many of those Emerging Markets, especially those to our West.

Thank you again to Dr. Jestin for including us in his travel plans and a most interesting pres- entation!
