The only thing between you and me is a life dedicated to your honor. iii For Our Little Grandchildren: Language Revitalization Among the Tlingit Acknowledgments This work is dedicated first and foremost to the future generations, who will inherit the beauty, power, complexity, and responsibility of the Tlingit language. This and other works simply would not exist if not for the strength, resilience, courage, and rebellion of previous generations who refused to let our language go, thus ensuring that it would survive in the face of political policies and social pressures that aimed to eradicate our people by prohibiting and shaming the use of our language. The ability to stand up in the face of the genocide draws inspiration worldwide from those who have stood up to defend and reclaim that which is theirs: land, language, education, health, and more. I am thankful every day of my life for my wife and love, Ḵálaa Miriah Twitchell, who supports our multilingual home and brainstorms methods to bring the language into other areas of our community and life, and also to our children, Ḵaalḵéisʼ Kiana Twitchell, Shaawatkʼé Ava Twitchell, and Ḵájaa Darian Twitchell, with whom I can speak entirely in the Tlingit language. Miriah has been the supporter supreme for pursuing a Ph.D. while raising a young family. We collaborated on methods to surround the children with language, which means creating our own educational institutions and collaborating with existing systems to figure out how to maximize language exposure and opportunities for fluency. The Skagway Traditional Council (STC) allowed me to print hundreds of pages and utilize their office space for this work and syncing files on their wifi, as did my Auntie Sheryl & Uncle Si Dennis. Alderworks Alaska Writers & Artists Retreat was simply wonderful, awarding a summer session retreat at the beautiful and productive Mary Jane Cabin, where much of this writing initially took place in the form of early drafts and book structure. It was a powerful moment to come home to our ancestral land after the death of my parents to heal and put distraction-free energy into this dissertation. Yatootéen Mallory Story typed up passages from articles and books to assist with research, and both she and Chalyee Will Geiger have engaged in enriching conversations on language revitalization among the Tlingit people. Yéil Tʼoochʼ Tláa Collyne Bunn and Chʼeet Wú Joe Binger brought nourishment and support to the writing retreat, and recorded several interviews with fluent elders and language advocates in order to contribute to the discussion of Tlingit language revitalization. Xéetlʼi Éesh Lyle James and Dax̱kil.átch Kolene James were wonderful in their motivational support as colleagues at UAS and as partners in advocacy work for equity & cultural safety within UAS and the Juneau area. As the dissertation went from a scattered series of ideas to a connected singular narrative, William Wilson provided invaluable time and feedback to help narrow the focus, Maria Shaa Tláa vii Haa Dachx̱ánxʼi Sáani Kagéiyi Yís: Haa Yoo X̱ʼatángi Kei Naltseen Williams helped guide it into being a dissertation instead of a collection of papers, and Éedaa Heather Burge painstakingly read several drafts and found the many typos, awkward phrasings, and self- contradictions that are likely to occur in large projects that are deeply connected to the author at the physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional levels. In fact, of the six thousand languages in the world today, only six hundred may survive the next century.     Kanien’keha / Mohawk Indigenous Language Revitalisation Efforts KANIEN’KEHA / MOHAWK INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE REVITALISATION EFFORTS IN CANADA GRACE A. GOMASHIE University of Western Ontario ABSTRACT. This paper gives an overview of ongoing revitalisation efforts for Kanien’keha / Mohawk, one of the endangered Indigenous languages in Canada. For the Mohawk people, their language represents a significant part of the culture, identity and well-being of individuals, families, and communities. The endanger- ment of Kanien’keha and other Indigenous languages in Canada was greatly accelerated by the residential school system. This paper describes the challenges surrounding language revitalisation in Mohawk communities within Canada as well as progress made, specifically for the Kanien’keha / Mohawk language. EFFORTS DE REVITALISATION LINGUISTIQUE DE LA LANGUE MOHAWK / KANIEN’KEHA AU CANADA RÉSUMÉ. Cet article offre une vue d’ensemble des efforts de revitalisation linguis- tique réalisés pour préserver la langue mohawk / kanien’keha, une des langues autochtones les plus menacées au Canada.     Native People in a Pacific World: The Native Alaskan Encounter and Exchange with Native People of the Pacific Coast Gabe Chang-Deutsch 2,471 words Junior Research Paper The Unangan and Alutiiq peoples of Alaska worked in the fur trade in the early 1800s in Alaska, California and Hawaii. Their activities make us rethink the history of Native people and ​ exploration, encounter and exchange. Most historical accounts focus on Native encounters with European people, but Native people also explored and met new Indigenous cultures. The early 1800s was a time of great global voyages and intermixing, from Captain Cook's Pacific voyages to the commercial fur trade in the eastern U.S to diverse workplaces in Atlantic world ports. The encounters and exchanges between and among Native people of the Pacific Coast are major part of this story. Relations between Native Alaskans, Native Californians and Hawaiians show how Native-to-Native encounters and exchanges were important in the creation of empire and the global economy. During the exploration of the Pacific coast in the early 1800s, Unangan and Alutiiq people created their own multicultural encounters and exchanges in the Pacific with Russian colonists, but most importantly with the indigenous people of Hawaii and California. By ​ examining the religious and cultural exchanges with Russian fur traders in the Aleutian Islands, the creation of cosmopolitan domestic partnerships between different Native groups at Fort Ross and Native-to-Native artistic exchanges in Hawaii, we can see how Native-led events and ideas were integral to the growing importance of the Pacific and beginning an intercontinentally connected world.

Consequently, teachers and courses, teaching materials and software are urgently needed. In the case of software, the polysynthetic nature of Kanyen’keha´ means that the number of possible combinations grows exponentially and soon surpasses attempts to capture variant forms by hand. It is in this context that we describe an attempt to produce language teaching materials based on a generative approach. A natural language generation environment (ivi/Vinci) embedded in a web environment (VinciLingua) makes it possible to produce, by rule, variant forms of indefinite complexity. These may be used as models to explore, or as materials to which learners respond. Generated materials may take the form of written text, oral utterances, or images; responses may be typed on a keyboard, gestural (using a mouse) or, to a limited extent, oral. The software also provides complex orthographic, morphological and syntactic analysis of learner productions. We describe the trajectory of development of materials for a suite of four courses on Kanyen’keha,´ the first of which will be taught in the fall of 2018.

SUMMARY: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA or Department), is adopting a final rule to exempt the Tongass National Forest from the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule (2001 Roadless Rule), which prohibits timber harvest and road construction/reconstruction with limited exceptions within designated inventoried roadless areas. In addition, the rule directs an administrative change to the timber suitability of lands deemed unsuitable, solely due to the application of the 2001 Roadless Rule, in the 2016 Tongass National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan (Tongass Forest Plan or Forest Plan), Appendix A. The rule does not authorize any ground-disturbing activities, nor does it increase the overall amount of timber harvested from the Tongass National Forest.
