Article & photos by Carolynn Boehmer (Gateway Indian Art Club) The Gateway Indian Art Club of St. Louis was founded in the early 1980’s by Todd Boehmer, Virgil Laux and Ben Thompson, three men who have been long time collectors and members of the Greater St Louis Archaeology Society. Although they started their collections with primarily stone tools, they had a great appreciation for the beauty of Indian Art which included pieces of bead work, quill work, pottery designs, basket designs, rugs and jewelry. They felt that an organization that focused on these pieces would benefit collectors and dealers in the St Louis area by connecting with others who recognized the artistry in each piece.

So join us for the St. Louis Indian Western Art Show & Sale on Saturday, November 4th from 10:00am to 5:00pm & Sunday, November 5th from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Admission is $5 & early admission is $25 at 9am Saturday. The show will take place at the Holiday Inn Route 66 Hotel, 10709 Watson Road at Lindbergh (near I-270), St. Louis, Missouri 63127.

The St. Louis area has a rich Indian heritage and there were many Indian Mounds within what is now the city of St. Louis when it was first being settled. We have a fabulous treasure nearby at Cahokia Mounds in Cahokia, IL and something we can be proud of. Additionally, the St Louis Art Museum houses the outstanding collection of St. Louisian, Donald Danforth, a long time collector of Indian artifacts.

The Gateway Indian Art Club of St. Louis has sponsored a major show every fall for more than 25 years which brings collectors and dealers to our area that shows the fine workmanship within the Indian Culture. Our show brings together collectors from all over the United States and is open to the public. It is our hope that when people see the beautiful items, it will form an interest in younger generations to perpetuate a strong interest in this unique culture and will carry into the future.
