The convention setting up CERN, signed on July 1, 1953 was ratified by France and Germany on September 29, 1954. By then nine States had signed, and CERN came officially into being. However, the interest of this date is rather limited. It ended a process initiated several years before and understanding this process is far more interesting than having a date of birth. -

A B S T R A C T The following report is a study of various aspects of the relationship between heavy water and the development of the civilian and military uses of atomic energy. It begins with a historical sketch which traces the heavy water storyfrom its discovery by Harold Urey in 1932 through its coming of age from scientific curiosity to strategic nuclear material at the eve of World War II and finally into the post-war period, where the military and civilian strands have some- times seemed inextricably entangled. The report next assesses the nonproliferation implications of the use of heavy water- moderated power reactors; several different reactor types are discussed, but the focus in on the natural uranium, on- power fueled, pressure tube reactor developed in Canada, the CANDU. -

ABSTRACT The bucklings of heavy water moderated lattices of ZEEP rods (3.25 cm diameter natural U metal contained in aluminum tubes) were measured by the flux mapping method in the ZED-2 reactor. The isotopic composition of trie moderator was 99.46 atom percent D2O. The bucklings, corrected for the 0.34 atom percent difference in isotopic composition, are in excellent ag.eement with earlier measurements made in the ZEEP reactor. In this work, the neutronic models of these critical exper iments were investigated by TSUNAMI, a sensitivity and uncertainty (SjU) analysis tool, part of the SCALE6 reactor physics package from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. TSUNAMI consists of different modules that are capable of calculating the values of keff and the uncertainties in keff due to uncertainties in the nu clear data. It generates energy-dependent sensitivity coefficients from which the percentage change in keff due to perturbations in nuclear data values can be determined. The calculated keff has a bias which is the difference between calculation and measurement. -

Blaylock’s Bomb: How a Small BC City Helped Create the World’s First Weapon of Mass Destruction Ron Verzuh our years into the Second World War, the citizens of Trail, British Columbia, a small city with a large smelter in the moun- tainous West Kootenay region near the United States border, were, Flike most of the world, totally unaware of the possibility of creating an atomic bomb. Trail’s industrial workforce, employees of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada (CM&S Company), were home-front producers of war materials destined for Allied forces on the battlefields of Europe. They, along with the rest of humanity, would have seen the creation of such a bomb as pure science fiction fantasy invented by the likes of British novelist H.G. Wells.1 They were understandably preoccupied with the life-and-death necessity of ensuring an Allied victory against the Nazis, Italian fascists, and the Japanese. It was no secret that, as it had done in the previous world conflict, their employer was supplying much of the lead, zinc, and now fertilizer that Britain needed to prosecute the war.2 What Trailites did not know was that they were for a short time indispensable in the creation of the world’s first weapon of mass destruction. 1 H.G. It was a sacred site for First Nations Peoples who have left behind a remarkable legacy of ancient pictographs which may still be seen today. It continues to be part of the sacred landscape for the Algonkins of Pikwakanagan First Nation near Golden Lake, Ontario and of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation (Maniwaki, Quebec) who call the rock "Migizi Kiishkaabikaan" meaning bird rock. In June 2001, they held ceremonies and drumming at the site, and will continue to visit what Dr. Daniel Arsenault, archaeologist calls this "natural monument." Location Oiseau Rock is a large outcrop of rock on the Ottawa River in Pontiac County, Quebec. It is situated across from the Atomic Energy of Canada Research Laboratory (AECL) at Chalk River, Ontario. This part of the river is very beautiful as the river narrows, the water deepens and the channel is flanked by the Laurentian Mountains. -

Il y a eu, au total, huit causeries de 30 minutes et 25 causeries de 15 minutes qui ont englobé une très grande variété de sujets. -
