KLEMENT Philosophy Dept, Univ. of Massachusetts, 352 Bartlett Hall, 130 Hicks Way, Amherst, MA 01003, USA Received 22 July 2002 It is well known that the circumflex notation used by Russell and Whitehead to form complex function names in Principia Mathematica played a role in inspiring Alonzo Church’s ‘Lambda Calculus’ for functional logic developed in the 1920s and 1930s. Interestingly, earlier unpublished manuscripts written by Russell between 1903 and 1905—surely unknown to Church—contain a more extensive anticipation of the essential details of the Lambda Calculus. Russell also anticipated Scho¨ nfinkel’s Combinatory Logic approach of treating multi- argument functions as functions having other functions as value. Russell’s work in this regard seems to have been largely inspired by Frege’s theory of functions and ‘value-ranges’. This system was discarded by Russell due to his abandonment of propositional functions as genuine entities as part of a new tack for solving Rus- sell’s paradox. In this article, I explore the genesis and demise of Russell’s early anticipation of the Lambda Calculus. 1. Introduction The Lambda Calculus, as we know it today, was initially developed by Alonzo Church in the late 1920s and 1930s (see, e.g. Church 1932, 1940, 1941, Church and Rosser 1936), although it built heavily on work done by others, perhaps most notably, the early works on Combinatory Logic by Moses Scho¨ nfinkel (see, e.g. his 1924) and Haskell Curry (see, e.g. -

Die ORF-Nachrichten im Spannungsfeld zwischen Professionalität, Profit, Publikum und Politik Die Nachrichten des öffentlich-rechtlichen ORF müssen sich im Spannungsfeld zwischen Profit, Professi- onalität, Publikum und Politik positionieren und profilieren. Die Legitimation des öffentlich-rechtlichen Status wird dabei vermehrt mit dem Hinweis in Frage gestellt, dass der ORF seinem gesetzlichen Programm- auftrag nicht nachkomme und politisch unausgewogen berichte. Diese empirische Studie stellt die ORF- Nachrichten österreichischen Qualitätszeitungen und ATV-aktuell komparativ gegenüber und geht der Frage nach, wie die professionellen Standards der ORF-Nachrichten im Sinne der publizistischen und politischen Pluralität im nationalen und internationalen Kontext zu beurteilen sind. Dabei zeigt sich zum einen, dass sich die ORF-Berichterstattung weitgehend im Rahmen transnationaler journalistischer Trends einordnet. -

Haskell before Haskell. An alternative lesson in practical logics of the ENIAC.∗ Liesbeth De Mol† Martin Carl´e‡ Maarten Bullynck§ January 21, 2011 Abstract This article expands on Curry’s work on how to implement the prob- lem of inverse interpolation on the ENIAC (1946) and his subsequent work on developing a theory of program composition (1948-1950). It is shown that Curry’s hands-on experience with the ENIAC on the one side and his acquaintance with systems of formal logic on the other, were conduc- tive to conceive a compact “notation for program construction” which in turn would be instrumental to a mechanical synthesis of programs. Since Curry’s systematic programming technique pronounces a critique of the Goldstine-von Neumann style of coding, his “calculus of program com- position”not only anticipates automatic programming but also proposes explicit hardware optimisations largely unperceived by computer history until Backus famous ACM Turing Award lecture (1977). This article frames Haskell B. Curry’s development of a general approach to programming. Curry’s work grew out of his experience with the ENIAC in 1946, took shape by his background as a logician and finally materialised into two lengthy reports (1948 and 1949) that describe what Curry called the ‘composition of programs’. Following up to the concise exposition of Curry’s approach that we gave in [28], we now elaborate on technical details, such as diagrams, tables and compiler-like procedures described in Curry’s reports. We also give a more in-depth discussion of the transition from Curry’s concrete, ‘hands-on’ experience with the ENIAC to a general theory of combining pro- grams in contrast to the Goldstine-von Neumann method of tackling the “coding and planning of problems” [18] for computers with the help of ‘flow-charts’. -

Introduction On 17 July 2018, former US president Barack Obama was invited to give the Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture in Johannesburg. In his speech, he warned that: a politics of fear and resentment and retrenchment began to appear, and that kind of politics is now on the move … I am not being alarmist, I am simply stating the facts. … Strongman politics are ascendant suddenly, whereby elections and some pretence of democracy are maintained – the form of it – but those in power seek to undermine every institution or norm that gives democracy meaning. Obviously, Obama did not use the terms ‘illiberal democracy’, ‘neo-authoritarianism’ or ‘populism’ (or other terms which currently dominate social-science scholarship and media reporting), but he certainly put his finger on the drastic socio-political changes that have been taking place globally, including in EU member states, specifically since the so-called ‘refugee crisis’ of 2015 (Rheindorf and Wodak, 2018). Indeed, as a study on ‘Fear not values’ conducted by de Vries and Hoffman (2016) in eight EU member states illustrates, over 50% of the voters for far-right parties viewed globalisation as the major threat in the future.3 Moreover, 53% of those who fear globalisation perceive migration as the major global challenge, and 54% display anti-foreigner sentiments. In a similar vein, political scientist Ivan Krastev concludes in his widely acknowledged essay Europadämmerung (2017: 48–49) that the ‘refugee crisis’ of 2015 might eventually lead to the destruction of the EU. -

Was the current head of government or other chief national authority elected through free and fair elections? 4 / 4 Executive elections in Austria are generally free and fair. The president is elected for a six-year term and has predominantly ceremonial duties. The president does, however, appoint the chancellor, who also needs the support of the legislature to govern. Austria’s current president is the former head of the Green Party, Alexander Van der Bellen, who was elected after a close and controversial poll that featured a repeat of the run-off between Van der Bellen and FPÖ candidate Norbert Hofer. The run-off was repeated after the Constitutional Court established that there had been problems with the handling of postal ballots. Following the 2017 elections to the National Council (Nationalrat), the lower house of parliament, ÖVP head Sebastian Kurz became chancellor with support of the right- wing, populist FPÖ. A2. Were the current national legislative representatives elected through free and fair elections? 4 / 4 Legislative elections in Austria are generally considered credible. The National Council has 183 members chosen through proportional representation at the district, state, and federal levels. Members serve five-year terms. The 62 members of the upper house, the Federal Council (Bundesrat), are chosen by state legislatures for five- or six-year terms. Snap elections to the National Council took place in 2017, one year early, following the collapse of the coalition between the SPÖ and the ÖVP. Animosities between the two former coalition partners were reflected in an antagonistic, heavily-fought election campaign. -

W. Krabbe Published online: 6 May 2008 Ó The Author(s) 2008 Abstract This paper explores applications of concepts from argumentation theory to mathematical proofs. Note is taken of the various contexts in which proofs occur and of the various objectives they may serve. Examples of strategic maneuvering are discussed when surveying, in proofs, the four stages of argumentation distin- guished by pragma-dialectics. Derailments of strategies (fallacies) are seen to encompass more than logical fallacies and to occur both in alleged proofs that are completely out of bounds and in alleged proofs that are at least mathematical arguments. These considerations lead to a dialectical and rhetorical view of proofs. As a source for concepts to be tested I turn to pragma-dialectics: both to the Standard Theory and to the Integrated Theory. The Standard Theory has been around for a long time and achieved its final formulation in 2004 (Van Eemeren and Grootendorst 1984, 1992, 2004). Toward a Logic of Everyday Reasoning Pei Wang Abstract: Logic should return its focus to valid reasoning in real-world situations. Since classical logic only covers valid reasoning in a highly idealized situation, there is a demand for a new logic for everyday reasoning that is based on more realistic assumptions, while still keeps the general, formal, and normative nature of logic. NAL (Non-Axiomatic Logic) is built for this purpose, which is based on the assumption that the reasoner has insufficient knowledge and resources with respect to the reasoning tasks to be carried out. In this situation, the notion of validity has to be re-established, and the grammar rules and inference rules of the logic need to be designed accordingly. Consequently, NAL has features very different from classical logic and other non-classical logics, and it provides a coherent solution to many problems in logic, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science. Keyword: non-classical logic, uncertainty, openness, relevance, validity 1 Logic and Everyday Reasoning 1.1 The historical changes of logic In a broad sense, the study of logic is concerned with the principles and forms of valid reasoning, inference, and argument in various situations. The first dominating paradigm in logic is Aristotle’s Syllogistic [Aristotle, 1882], now usually referred to as traditional logic. This study was carried by philosophers and logicians including Descartes, Locke, Leibniz, Kant, Boole, Peirce, Mill, and many others [Bochenski,´ 1970, Haack, 1978, Kneale and Kneale, 1962]. A Brief Scientific Biography of Robin Milner Gordon Plotkin, Colin Stirling & Mads Tofte Robin Milner was born in 1934 to John Theodore Milner and Muriel Emily Milner. His father was an infantry officer and at one time commanded the Worcestershire Regiment. During the second world war the family led a nomadic existence in Scotland and Wales while his father was posted to different parts of the British Isles. In 1942 Robin went to Selwyn House, a boarding Preparatory School which is normally based in Broadstairs, Kent but was evacuated to Wales until the end of the war in 1945. In 1947 Robin won a scholarship to Eton College, a public school whose fees were a long way beyond the family’s means; fortunately scholars only paid what they could afford. While there he learned how to stay awake all night solving mathematics problems. (Scholars who specialised in maths were expected to score 100% on the weekly set of problems, which were tough.) In 1952 he won a major scholarship to King’s College, Cambridge, sitting the exam in the Examinations Hall which is 100 yards from his present office. However, before going to Cambridge he did two years’ national military service in the Royal Engineers, gaining a commission as a second lieutenant (which relieved his father, who rightly suspected that Robin might not be cut out to be an army officer). By the time he went to Cambridge in 1954 Robin had forgotten a lot of mathematics; but nevertheless he gained a first-class degree after two years (by omitting Part I of the Tripos).
