M An outlaw practice : boxing, governance and western law Abstract This investigation examines the uses of Western law to regulate and at times outlaw the sport of boxing. Drawing on a primary sample of two hundred and one reported judicial decisions canvassing the breadth of recognised legal categories, and an allied range fight lore supporting, opposing or critically reviewing the sport's development since the beginning of the nineteenth century, discernible evolutionary trends in Western law, language and modern sport are identified. Emphasis is placed on prominent intersections between public and private legal rules, their enforcement, paternalism and various evolutionary developments in fight culture in recorded English, New Zealand, United States, Australian and Canadian sources. Fower, governance and regulation are explored alongside pertinent ethical, literary and medical debates spanning two hundred years of Western boxing history. & Acknowledgements and Declaration This has been a very solitary endeavour. He’s got an All-Star list of victories. So they’re gonna think ‘. damn he beat all these guys?’ People are gonna know. He should be in the top 5, top 3 and stuff.” - Mike Tyson on Evander Holyfield (Chasing Tyson [3]) The 2015 documentary “Chasing Tyson” [3] describes the career of 4-time world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield. One of the central themes of this film was how due to his low-key style and humble attitude, the boxing public did not accept Holyfield as a top fighter deserving of the accolade “world heavyweight champion”. However, former Heavyweight Champion and widely accepted all-time great Mike Tyson is quoted above at the end of the film, making the case for Holyfield’s greatness. Although not particularly flashy in or outside the ring, Holyfield’s achievement in the sport of boxing may be measured in an objective way: by the list of quality boxers he has defeated. This argument is reminiscent of Google’s PageRank algorithm [2, 10]. PageRank is an algorithm that assigns to web pages a value, based on the web pages who link to it and their value, that is receiving an incoming link from a high-value website carries more value than a link from a low-level one.

  • GOODWIN: Pinklon Thomas Sr., Dad of Ex-Heavyweight Champ, Celebrates 100Th Birthday Page 1 of 2
GOODWIN: Pinklon Thomas Sr., dad of ex-heavyweight champ, celebrates 100th birthday Page 1 of 2 The Daily Tribune (http://www.dailytribune.com) GOODWIN: Pinklon Thomas Sr., dad of ex-heavyweight champ, celebrates 100th birthday Thursday, May 22, 2014 One hundred years ago, the great heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis was born in Alabama. A few days after he was born, Pinklon Thomas Sr. was born, also in Alabama, before moving to Pontiac in the 1940s. There’s a connection here, even though Pinklon Thomas Sr. never boxed in his life. But his son sure did — that’s Pinklon Thomas Jr. — and he eventually won the heavyweight boxing championship, just like Joe Louis did. While Louis left us a long time ago, Pinklon Sr. is still with us, as a host of relatives, friends and supporters helped him observe his 100th birthday last Sunday at Franklin Road Church of Christ in Pontiac. “It was a fantastic day,” said Pinklon Jr., who spent the evening “kicking it with Boss Man.” Indeed, the tributes poured in for Pinklon Sr., a centenarian, U.S. Army veteran and one of a family of 16 children. He has lived through more than a dozen presidential administrations. Mattie McKinney Hatchett, a member of the Oakland County Board of Commissioners, House Democratic Leader Tim Greimel, boxing’s first lady Jackie Kallen, former manager of a number of world boxing champions, and Pontiac Mayor Dr. Deirdre Waterman made appearances and gave their tributes. “She (Waterman) was really, really so nice,” said Pinklon Jr., who did a lot of the grunt work in putting the occasion together, much of which was a long distance production from his home in Orlando, Fla.
