Third Grade Music Choice Boards

Peter and the Wolf (Third Quarter) Music Choice Board Information Music class will be a recorded lesson in Google classroom that students can view at any time. Students are encouraged to watch and participate to the best of their ability. In addition to watching the videos and participating, students will be given Choice Boards that they may select 2 activities of their choice to complete for the quarter. You can type your answers, take a picture, or send a video of yourself completing the activity to your music teacher. The first choice activity is due March 3, 2021. Peter and the Wolf is a piece of orchestral music written by Sergei Prokofiev. This piece contains a children’s story and as the narrator speaks, the orchestra accompanies them. The composer uses a different instrument and melodic motif for each character. This type of music is called programme music because the music specifically represents the characters and is used to make the story come to life.

For the third quarter of music class, your choice board activities will focus on the story. You have the option of analyzing one or two of the characters and the instruments that portray them; you can research the life and music of the composer, Sergei Prokofiev; or, you can create your own programme music to your favorite story. For this activity you will research the composer of Peter and the Wolf, Sergei Prokofiev.

You will research at least 10 facts about Sergei Prokofiev. They can be related to his life or his music.

You will find and listen to 3 other pieces by Prokofiev. You will write down which pieces you chose, and what you thought of his other music.

Lastly, you will write what you thought about the music in Peter and the Wolf.

Once you have completed all of your work, you will submit your answers to your music teacher. Choice Board #9: Create your own programme music

Peter and the Wolf is programme music. Prokofiev took a story and translated it to music. For this activity, you will do the same.

Think of your favorite fairy tale or story. Choose at least 4 characters in your story.

Which characters did you choose?

What instrument would you select for each character and why? What about the instrument reminds you of the character?

Once you have thought about your story and the instruments that will play each character, submit your completed work to your music teacher.
