On behalf of everyone here at the Village Venture, a very warm welcome back to the first printed issue since it all started during the March issue. I say welcome back, but many of you will probably not have been aware that the Venture continued weekly as a special online weekly ’lockdown issue’ posted on 2 websites: http://parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/brattleby https://scamptonchurch.org/parish-magazine/ If the Venture is ever in the unfortunate position of having to stop printing again, please look for the online issue on these two websites. Please also welcome two new village advertisers: Khura Thai - food takeaway on page 2 and Cutting Edge Garden Hair Salon on page 21.

I would like to take this opportunity to lead you all in a huge vote of thanks to John Baker who has been a major part of your distribution team for many years and has decided to retire from the team. Mick Slack is also retiring from his post as Distribution Manager having ably lead and organised a willing team of volunteers during the Venture’s expansion to 3 extra villages during the last twelve months. Thank you both for giving up your valuable time to help make the Village Venture what it is today! Despite the lockdown and the hardship of not being able to see our families and friends we have seen such wonderful support and commu- nity spirit within our villages. If you know someone who really deserves a vote of thanks for helping our community during ‘Lockdown’ do let the Village Venture know and we will print their story in future issues! MASKS

So we’ve got to wear them, but why have a boring one? I’ve been spending the summer making masks to order on Facebook then to sell in Ingham stores, so to the wider villages, they are made from polycotton and lined, washable, with a nose bridge and self tie elastic to suit the individual. In sizes for men, ladies/ teenagers and children’s sizes 3-6 years and 7-12 years for £5 each to cover costs and a charity donation - have so far donated £100 to All Saints toilet and kitchen fund and continuing to donate to Little Acorns (to date £70). Contact me to view current fabric choices and to place an order. Hilary Jackson - 07745 833383

From the PCC Secretary

Slowly, life is beginning to return to some form of normality but perhaps life will never be quite the same again. Although the lockdown has been a very difficult time for us all, it has undoubtedly brought our communities closer together. We have established a new form of worship using Zoom. A weekly Pastoral Letter has been circulated to our database. A review of our church insurance has achieved some significant savings for our churches. We have established an online giving page to support our churches (www.giving.springlineparish.co.uk). Additionally, South Carlton Church has been re- wired and the PCC has continued to meet via Zoom. During the last 5 months we have been holding a weekly online Eucharist Service by Zoom which has been very successful but with a reduced Ministry Team following the sad death of Revd Bill Williams we will be moving to a new pattern of worship from September. Zoom will continue to play a part in our worship. We will be restarting our Sunday worship with a United Parish Open Air Service at North Carlton on Sunday 30th August at 10.30am. On Sunday 27th September we are holding a United Parish Gift Day Service at South Carlton at 10.30am. The Annual Parochial Church Meeting which was postponed from March will be held on Thursday 15th October at 7pm. The location and style of meeting (physical, virtual or a combination of both) is still to be decided. If you require any help or assistance please do get in touch

Kind regards.

Lincolnshire Community Group of the Year 2019

Since March, when Springline Good Neighbours were so well supported by 42 addi- tional, temporary volunteers, recruited in conjunction with Ingham Parish Council, we have completed 344 assignments in support of vulnerable local people. Our compara- ble figure for 2019 was 150! This is a great achievement, with many elderly and lonely people receiving food deliv- eries, help with shopping, collecting prescriptions and more recently lifts for medical appointments. We are very grateful and also thank the Inn on the Green in supporting the takeaway food deliveries. During lockdown we have also been able to sign up more clients that were previously not known to us, who can now be supported in the future. We hope that the challenges of COVID-19 have also created a greater awareness of our need to look out for our neighbours who may be vulnerable. We have launched our ‘buddy’ scheme with volunteers calling on a regular basis, those who may be lonely simply for a chat on the phone and to check they are well or have any specific needs. Thanks to all those who have given their time in recent months – we are very grateful. This has demonstrated that there is a strong community spirit when faced with a really tough and challenging period.

FRESH from ALISON’S LOCKDOWN KITCHEN

With strict instruction to stay indoors and keep supermarket visits to a minimum, you may find your food supplies are starting to dwindle. But please don’t feel the urge to go out and panic buy! Lockdown recipes all use essential ingredients you probably already have to hand and are de- signed to keep you feeling well. What’s more, you can always make sim- ple swaps, depending on what you do have in the cupboards. Staying in doesn’t look so bad anymore.

Ingredients: 500g undyed smoked haddock fillets, skin- less and boneless 800ml whole milk 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 2 large leeks, halved lengthways, washed well, then thinly sliced 300g arborio rice 150ml white wine 500ml fresh chicken stock, hot 150g spinach, washed and wilted in a hot, Risotto dry pan Finely grated zest 1 lemon, juice 2 lemons

Grated parmesan to serve

Method:

Heat the oven to 200°C/ 180°C fan/gas 6. Put the smoked haddock fillets in a ceramic baking dish and cover with the milk. Bake for 15 minutes or until the fish is almost cooked, then carefully remove the fillets to a plate. Reserve the milk in a jug.

Meanwhile, in a large sauté pan, heat the oil and add the onion and leeks. Gently cook for 5 minutes until starting to soften, then add the rice. Gently fry for 2-3 minutes, stirring regularly.

Pour in the wine and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes, then add the stock, a ladleful at a time, stirring frequently as it reduces. Once all the stock has been incorporated, start adding the re- served milk a ladleful at a time, stirring frequently as it reduces, until the rice is tender to the bite. You may not need all the milk.

When the rice is nearly cooked, stir in the wilted spinach, lemon zest and juice, then flake in the smoked haddock. Season generously with pepper (the fish will be salty so taste before adding salt) and sprinkle over the grated parmesan.

Unfortunately, like many attractions and venues around the County, here at RAF Ingham Heritage Centre, we've made the very difficult decision to remain closed to visitors for the remainder of this year. This is purely for financial reasons; as the required ex- penditure on PPE, Sanitizer products, protective Screens, and a one- ways system, couldn't be financially justified. However, in the meantime, our Volunteers are undertaking a pleth- ora of maintenance tasks around the Site, whilst strictly adhering to Social Distancing; so if you'd like to become a volunteer, please email [email protected] , or phone 07787805978 . Hopefully in the October Edition, we'll have more details about our 10th Anniversary Exhibition to be held on Sun 22 November, at Ingham Village Hall. So Stay Healthy and Stay Safe everyone.

Bread is a national staple food but how many of you make the effort to bake your own? Like many of you I’ve always been a keen cook so when moving into ‘The Granary’ across the road from the Dambusters Inn 12 years ago it seemed inevitable I would have to start baking my own bread. Little did I know that your incredible support for what is now Dave’s Daily Bread would selfishly give me so much satisfaction but also raise over £2000 for charity. It all started in 2013 when I began coaching Welton U10’s football team and had a go at selling my bread to the customers in the Dambusters Inn to help raise funds for the team. This was the start of a great partnership as Saturday lunchtime bread sales boomed ,Greg be- came the long term football team sponsor and I got to spend even more time in the pub! Your enthusiasm for fresh and locally baked bread was pretty clear and with my secret yearning to always start my own little business I put an advert for a bit of fun into the Village Venture under the name Dave’s Daily Bread. Your response was quite staggering and before long I was baking every hour I could to meet your demand. As my Saturday mornings got earlier and my kitchen increasingly crammed with baking tins and great new customers, I decided to convert half of my garage into a little shop. I started to allow other local bakers to sell their produce in the shop and was soon donating a good proportion of all the proceeds to local charities. I also had great fun branching out into Croissants, Naan Breads, Hot Cross Buns, Pasta and the ever popular doughnuts which you literally eat in their hundreds!

Page 31 e-mail: village. [email protected] With the addition of a website and a Facebook Page everything just went crazy and as well as swapping bread rolls for beer in the Dam- busters I started getting enquiries from a num- ber of local businesses. With having a full-time job and not being motivated by the money I continued to ramp up the volume just for fun of it and to serve the local community .The re- wards of your fantastic feedback, radio inter- views , photography shoots and invites to local shows was more than enough motivation. The decision to donate solely to Pancreatic cancer Research UK since my friend died over 2 years ago has also been a fantastic motivation and in this time you have raised over £1500 for this charity alone. So it just leaves me to say a final massive thank you to you all! It has been an incredible journey which has yet to finish and I just hope that this little story will inspire you to follow your passion and just go for it, you never know where it will lead!

A Message from Burton Parish Council - COVID19 Pandemic Thank You and Keep Safe

Just a few words from myself as Chairperson of Burton Parish Council and fellow members of the Council to say a very big thank you to all of the people in Burton Vil- lage, Burton Waters and Odder who have been supporting people with shopping, col- lecting prescriptions and helping out wherever they could for people who had been self -shielding whilst we were in lockdown and beyond. There are too many people to thank personally but you know who you are and we would like to say a big kind heart- ed thank you for doing this.

We would also like to thank the people who picked up rubbish which had been dumped along Fen Lane whilst we were in lockdown (it’s a pity people didn’t take home their rubbish.) I saw many a time a lovely couple with their dog picking up rub- bish and many other people from either in the village or Burton Waters. We would also like to thank District Council for also picking up lots of larger items which were dumped on Fen Lane; they acted so quickly in picking things up!

We held our first Parish Council meeting since the lockdown on Tuesday 11th August and are hoping to have our regular meetings in Burton Club. The dates for forthcom- ing meetings are 10 November, 12 January 2021 and 2 March 2021. Meetings start at 7pm with an open session for the public and we hope to see as many residents attend- ing our meetings as possible.

Thank you all again. It is good to see that there is a good community spirit amongst our Parish in helping out each other in times of difficulty and strange times!

Keep safe.

Sue North and fellow members of Burton Parish Council

Now the Village Venture is back in booklet form I can thank most sincerely all those people who sent me cards, letters, phone calls and food after Bill’s sudden and unexpected death in April. I was overwhelmed by your love and support that is still continuing. Thank you and God Bless. Jenny Williams.

Page 35 e-mail: village. [email protected] LETTER FROM THE PARISH PRIEST

September 2020 – Covid-19 and New Beginnings

Dear Friends, I am happy to write this letter as the ‘Village Venture’ restarts after several months of the lockdown. It’s been such a period these last months! None of us ever imagined what the new year 2020 would have turned out to be. But just imagine what we all have, and are, still going through! The coronavirus has turned the world upside down. We are still grappling with its terrible effects. All over the world individuals, villages, neighbourhoods, nations along with the structures and insti- tutions that make our lives what they are struggling to adapt to social distancing and safety norms. It is a difficult quagmire of uncertainty, anxiety and fear lurking behind it all. And yet, in the midst of all this, the very best of the human spirit shines out like a silver lining on the darkest clouds! Hu- manity is at its best when faced with insurmountable obstacles! But we have overcome the two great wars. We have achieved the highest in human creativity and innovation and we will overcome this virus as well! We shall also overcome Covid-19! The Church too has, and still is, struggling to come to terms with the virus and its effects. Churches previously closed are gradually re-opening for worship. But the fear and anxiety is there and the new norms for wearing masks, social distancing, hygiene etc do make for a good picture! However, from September onwards, in the Springline Parish, we are restarting worship in our village church- es. We have been a virtual Church during the lockdown. We shall therefore continue to have one on-line zoom Parish Service on the second Sunday of the month. Among the biggest casualties of the virus have been the financial institutions and the commercial and industrial businesses. Several companies of all sizes and kinds are winding down, unable to cope. The Church too is facing a financial crunch as a result of the virus also due to lack of public worship. During this Covid-19, our churches in the Springline Parish did not have regular services in church and, among other things, regular or retiring collections in churches also ceased. We have therefore designed a new webpage to help people give on-line. Please visit our giving page giving.springlineparish.co.uk if you would like to make a donation to promote God’s work through the Church in our village communities.

All wishes to Bill Shaw and the Village Venture Team as they restart publication! May the village magazine continue to be an important and vital link for our village communities! I wish you all the joys of Autumn, the “season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, close bosom-friend of the maturing sun” as John Keats writes in his ode “To Autumn”.

God bless you all, your families, your children, your friends, your neighbours!

Your friend, Father Sebastian, Rector, Springline Parish Diocese of Lincoln Telephone: 01522 731793 Email: [email protected]

Page 36 e-mail: village. [email protected] SCAMPTON PARISH COUNCIL Due to the Corona virus an unusual meeting of the Parish Council was held in the grounds of the BSA Hall in Aisthorpe on 20th July 2020, during which the following matters were discussed.

VE Day Celebrations –Due to the Coronavirus the event had had to be postponed. It would be rescheduled once larger gatherings could be held. Litterbins for the Estate After discussion it was agreed that several smaller bins, in more locations, suitable for general and dog waste would be more appropriate. The position of the bins would be finalised at the next meeting and then the order placed. It was agreed unanimously to provide funding for the litter pick on the estate. Battery for the defibrillator_ Graham Roy, who maintains the defibrillator on be- half of the Parish Council has phoned to say that we need a new battery. The Clerk asked him to order one on our behalf. Speed Camera Training The paperwork has been submitted to Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership for processing once they return to work. Church Bells After a discussion about the bells it was agreed that Cllr Sneath would talk to Joe Bartrop, who had done the leaflet drop to see if the camp had been included in this, as it was their church as well. The feeling was that the Coun- cil would discuss this matter at a future meeting and no decision was made on the request for a donation towards the costs of providing an electronic bell system. Vacancies on the Parish Council/ Sub committee Cllr Patterson then explained the anomalies of the Parish Council and explained that there would be positions for those who did not become councillors to be involved with the Assets Group. They would be looking at the assets of the RAF and which ones the community wanted to take on. They would report to the Council at each meeting.
