Sporting Legends: Axel Merckx
SPORTING LEGENDS: AXEL MERCKX SPORT: CYCLING COMPETITIVE ERA: 1993 - 2007 Axel Merckx (born August 8, 1972 in Uccle, Belgium), the son of the legendary Eddy Merckx, was a professional road bicycle racer since November 1993. In 1995 he joined Team Motorola as a team-mate of the young Lance Armstrong. Despite several strong years of racing, including winning the Belgian national championship in 2000, Axel is probably still more famous for being the son of five-time Tour de France champion Eddy Merckx than for any of his cycling exploits. Despite being overshadowed by his father's formidable record, Axel has repeatedly vowed to make his mark by accomplishing feats Eddy never managed - including a Tour de France stage win at the top of Alpe d'Huez and a win in the Paris-Tours World Cup race - but has yet to make good on these promises. He has a large number of fans in Belgium, and would undoubtedly engender a great deal more goodwill if he were ever to achieve either of those elusive wins. One place where he has overshadowed his father is at the Olympic Games. A good climber, Axel is probably at his best in the mid-altitude mountain ranges, notably the Massif Central and the Ardennes. His favorite race, and the one he feels best in, is Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He is also always aiming for a Tour de France stage win, and can often be found in long breaks. His sprinting capacities are not that strong, so he is often beaten at the finish. SPORTING LEGENDS: AXEL MERCKX Merckx enjoyed his 2004 Olympic Bronze success in Athens. -
Doping Critics Hack Computers for Chris Froome Data
Doping Critics Hack Computers For Chris Froome Data Team Sky boss Sir Dave Brailsford has revealed that critics of Team Sky have hacked into the performance data of Tour de France leader Chris Froome. Sir Dave Brailsford said he believes data has been stolen by team©s critics to discredit the performances of Froome and raise doping suggestions. The Team principal added we think someone has hacked into our training data and got Chris' files, so we've got some legal guys on the case there. On Monday evening, a video that purportedly showed the ride of Froome on Mont Ventoux during the 2013 Tour with data on speed, heart rate, power, and cadence overlaid was removed from YouTube. Viewers of the video took to social media for interpreting the data and many suggested that there was evidence of doping. Froome had previously expressed his frustration ahead of the Tour of "clowns" trying to interpret power data. Chris Froome was leading the 2015 Tour de France by 12 seconds on the first rest day in Pau. Froome recently produced a ride to conquer stage 10 of the Tour de France and increase his overall lead to nearly three minutes. Froome - who led by 12 seconds overnight - broke away with 6.4km left of the first summit finish of the 2015 Tour de France to win in La Pierre-Saint-Martin. BBC Sport©s Matt Slater remarked this was a devastating win for Froome and Team Sky, with Grand Tour champions and challengers scattered all over the road up to La Pierre-Saint-Martin. -

West Coast From the famous Calanches de Piana until the bay of Calvi, walking along the coastline of Corsica's Regional park This hike sets o# from the calanques of Piano near Calvi, the coastal side of the regional park of Corsica. It follows the most beautiful stages of the Mare e Monti but also incorporates other interesting paths. The hike includes crossing the gulf of Porto and the Scandola nature reserve, which is classified as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Each day provides a new source of amazement. As the route is between the sea and mountains, this hike o#ers a wide variety of countryside: the famous sculptured rocks known as the calanches of Piana, paths zigzagging through the Corsican maquis and crossing former chestnut plantations, the chemin des douaniers (literally the customs path), which follows the ragged coastline of Corsica. Furthermore, your evenings will be spent in charming Corsican villages such as Piana and Ota where the houses made of red granite create an exceptional sight. The highpoint of the trip is arriving in Calvi; pottering around the cobbled streets of the citadel is a must. In spring, you will be delighted by the smells and the flowering of the maquis. In autumn, you will be dazzled by the lights. And for those seeking pleasure, there is the possibility to swim in the sea every day. Level of di&culty The walks are on good footpaths and trails, the terrain is varied but often rocky. You need to be used to walking and take regular exercise to enjoy this holiday. -

PRESS PACK WINTER 2020 / 2021 savoie mont blanc Located between lakes and mountains, Savoie Mont Blanc is a beautiful area for a winter break. Savoie Mont Blanc has 110 ski resorts, including some world-famous ones such as Val d’Isère, Méribel, Courchevel, Chamonix… and many more. But there are also some smaller ones, which are not well-known by British skiers. This winter could be the ideal time to visit a smaller resort for alpine skiing and also to try some other winter sport activities, such as cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. These eco-friendly activities are the perfect way to peacefully enjoy the beautiful vistas and the pure mountain air, while coming back super-fit from your holiday. If you opt for slow travel, why not stop for a few nights before or after going to a ski resort? There are many charming hotels in the pretty towns of Chambéry, Aix-les-Bains and Annecy, as well as by the lakes and in the vineyards. In the valleys and mountains, more and more hotels and residences are eco-friendly. This sustainable trend is being taken up by restaurants too, which are offering more and more organic, local and seasonal produce. Whatever type of winter holiday you choose, Savoie Mont Blanc is the perfect place to reboot and feel re-energised once back home. Savoie Mont Blanc is easy to access by plane (airports include Chambéry, Grenoble, Lyon and Geneva) and car. Although there is no Snowtrain this winter, Savoie Mont Blanc is still easily accessible by train: take the Eurostar to Paris or Lille, then the TGV to Chambéry or Annecy (it takes less than 3 hours from Paris to Chambéry and less than 4 hours for Annecy). -
