It seems to me, the whole thing wraps up very quickly. There is something about the way Jennings wraps these mysteries in and around Toronto at the beginning of the twentieth century. She attended the Unive Maureen Jennings, now a Canadian Citizen, was born on Eastfield Road in Birmingham, England and spent her formative years there until she emigrated to Canada at the age of seventeen with her mother. Jan 29, Carol Palmer rated it it was amazing. While the novel also highlights how some parts of Toronto life were changing at the time, it also exposes the divide between rich and poor, and men and women. As the case progresses, Murdoch is also dealing with a dental problem, which comes not only with pain, but the fear of having to get the services of a dentist. An exciting time in so many ways but after eight years, another change of direction and in , Maureen left Ryerson to become a psychotherapist, which was a long time interest. This was the third Detective Murdoch novel, and it is great to settle in with Murdoch and the other characters of Station Number 4 for another intense tale. Eakins Jessica Greco Always interesting and readable, it took Murdoch a maddeningly long time to begin inquiries where they should be. Foster ok? Professor Otranto Anne Ross Anyone who is aware of the treatment of inmates in turn-of-the-century asylums will understand why. The book mostly deals with an extremely dysfunctional family composed of a father, his son and daughter, a step-son, and father's third wife younger than his daughter. T Reading these slightly out of order as I'm limited by what the library has available--but if you've seen the show, you can fill in the missing character details, at least about Murdoch. But it is a readable if depressing book. It differs from the TV series in lots of ways, too many to enumerate. But that does not sit well with Murdoch, and soon there is new evidence. It was not a satisfying ending but it was still an enjoyable read. Eakins is shown from his left side, the organ has its keyboard cover open, revealing the keys and stop knobs. Oliver Wicken. The result is a sad and dark story that will lead Murdoch to not only the truth about Wicken, but even further crimes. The solution however is found thanks to Murdoch thoroughness and his investigative skills. Of course, the usual problem of reading a book after seeing a movie, or especially a long running TV series, is the mental picture of the actors versus the descriptions of the author but I'm happy to say they were not too far apart. I wanted a bit more resolution. Enlarge cover. Murdoch Mysteries: Poor Tom is Cold Writer Peter Curran. I'd much rather stick to the tv show, thank you very much, where at least there's truly something to like about him. Whether describing a tooth extraction, the unquestioning prejudice toward the few Chinese immigrants in the city, or the well-intentioned, but bizarre, treatment of the mentally ill, Manureen Jennings once again brings the period vividly to life. I'm also enjoying how Ms. Aug 01, Randy rated it it was amazing. Language: English. External Reviews. Ms Jennings' characters are so three-dimensionally crafted, that they tend to live in your head even while you are not reading. The depiction of s Toronto is gritty, without becoming anachronistically noir, and Jennings puts an amazing amount of detail into understanding the social structure and mentality of characters of the time period, without making it obvious or pointing out the differences. The title comes from Shakespeare's "King Lear," and, as you might expect there is the death of a young police constable that is initially thought to be a suicide. Alternate Versions. There was far too much going on here to really have a tight, coherent narrative: the treatment of Chinese immigrants, the use of hysterectomies, the role of psychiatric institutions, a conniving family, a lying prostitute, long scenes about juries, and so much more. • Criminal Investigation and Canadian National Identity in Murdoch Mysteries
Sheley, E. 2020. Criminal Investigation and Canadian National Identity in Murdoch Mysteries. Entertainment and Sports Law Journal, 18: 7, pp. 1–6. DOI: https://doi.org/10.16997/eslj.253 INTERVENTION Criminal Investigation and Canadian National Identity in Murdoch Mysteries Erin Sheley California Western School of Law, US [email protected] This essay argues that Canadian detective show Murdoch Mysteries uses the legal conflict between Canadian criminal investigation and American foreign policy to shore up an idea of Canadian national iden- tity against an explicitly American other. First, I discuss the character of William Murdoch as a distinct departure from the literary tradition of the nineteenth-century police officer. Second, I show howMurdoch Mysteries attempts to serve as social criticism concerning socio-legal issues still relevant to Canadian society in the present day. Third, I argue that the show’s ongoing depiction of criminal jurisdictional conflict between the Toronto constabulary and Her Majesty’s government in Ottawa reveals anxieties over the present-day American threat to Canadian security and way of life. Finally, I conclude that the repeated narrative contrast between Murdoch’s scientific criminal investigations and federal strategies of American appeasement serves the secondary purpose of displacing domestic social anxieties onto an American other and reifying a Canadian national identity premised on objectivity and the rule of law. Keywords: criminal law; television drama; Canada; national identity; communications regulation; broadcasting Long-running Canadian detective show Murdoch Mysteries (2008) was an unexpected hit; even the show’s creators have expressed surprise that the adventures of strait-laced police detective William Murdoch—who uses scientific gadgetry to solve crimes in Victorian- and Edwardian-era Toronto—would become one of the regularly highest-rated programmes on the public CBC network (Stinson 2014: B5).

  • October 2020
Allison’s Book Corner October 2020 Except the Dying by Maureen Jennings (McClelland & Stewart 2012) Sometimes, when the seasons change, it is a good time to switch up from the genre you usually read. Memoirs are my favorite, but I also love a good old-fashioned mystery; when I was a young girl I kept a list of all of the Agatha Christie books I devoured. As you can imagine, I get many recommendations from library patrons. Recently I was encouraged to check out “The Murdoch Mysteries.” There is even a popular TV series based on the books. I did not have to be told twice. “Except the Dying” is the first in a seven-book series and after reading this one, I cannot wait to read the rest voraciously. The series opens in the winter of 1895 in Toronto, Canada. The reader is drawn in immediately as the author describes two people removing the boots from a dead body lying in the snow. It’s gruesome, but the descriptive, compelling writing makes you want to read further and find out about the dead body. Also, who would have the nerve to steal from the deceased? The dead body is that of a French-Canadian housemaid. She had been working for a wealthy British family who immigrated to Canada. (The author is also a British transplant to Canada.) Maureen Jennings has a way of making the reader feel she is right there in the story with the characters. She vividly brings to life a certain era. Her detailed descriptions of the clothing, the furnishings, the different classes, weave together a brilliant mystery.
