FLUTE

Mili Chang is pursuing a DMA in flute performance at University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she is the Collins Distinguished Fellow. She has played baroque flute for two years and is involved in UW-Madison’s Collegium Musicum. She enjoys the simplicity and the complexity of . Mili received a BMus and MMus in her native Taiwan. TBSI 2013

Leighann Daihl, historical flutist, has concertized throughout central Europe and the US as both a soloist and collaborator of chamber and orchestral music. She holds a BMUS in traverso from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and a MMus in traverso from Indiana University.

Roseen Giles is completing a PhD in musicology at the University of Toronto. Her dissertation explores the aesthetics of Claudio Monteverdi’s late madrigals, in particular the relationship between music and poetry in the composer’s settings of Giambattista Marino’s verses. Her scholarly interests are broad and far-reaching, including music and devotional practice in the early modern period; occult philosophy and the music of the Renaissance; and the musical notation of medieval Armenia. Roseen is the 2013 recipient of the American Musicological Society’s Howard Mayer Brown Fellowship. TBSI 2008-2011

Joanna Marsden is a flautist from Lincoln, Massachusetts. She completed her MMus at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with Wilbert Hazelzet. She works with Ensemble 1729, Les Vents Atlantiques, Compagnie Baroque Mont-Royal, Boston’s Musical Offering, and Rococonut. She won second prize at the 2012 NFA competition. She lives in Montréal.

OBOE

Luke Conklin is a baroque oboist currently studying for his Doctorate with Debra Nagy at Case Western Reserve University. A member of the first graduating class of the Historical Performance programme at the Juilliard School, Luke has performed with American Bach Soloists, Madison Bach Musicians, Juilliard Baroque, Trinity and many others. He has a strong interest in the music of Rameau, as well as a side interest in Irish traditional flute performance. TBSI 2009, 2010, 2012

Ruth Denton is completing an Advanced Certificate in Baroque Performance at the University of Toronto, studying with John Abberger. She sings with the Pax Christi Chorale and has taken up the tenor , her first stringed instrument. While completing a BMus on modern oboe at the University of Manitoba, she was active as a choral singer and conductor. She also plays the alto saxophone, and has been a member of the National Youth Band of Canada for the past five years. TBSI 2012, 2013

Sarah Huebsch performs on modern and historical oboes throughout North America. Projects this year have included concerts with the Washington National Cathedral Baroque Orchestra, Ensemble Lipzodes, Spire Baroque Orchestra, Bourbon Baroque, Callipygian Players, and the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra. Sarah is a graduate of the New England Conservatory and Indiana University. TBSI 2011

Maria Raffaele is a modern and historical oboist currently living in Basel, Switzerland. After graduating in 2012 with a BMus in Oboe Performance and Professional Writing from Carnegie Mellon University, she began her studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis for a second BMus in historical oboes with Katharina Arfken.

BASSOON

Georgeanne Banker earned her BMUS and BA degrees from McGill University and her MMUS from the San Francisco Conservatory, where she also studied and continuo. She is a founding member of One Found Sound, a conductorless chamber orchestra based in San Francisco, CA. TBSI 2011-2013

Born and raised in New Hampshire, bassoonist Leah Kohn is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at the Julliard School, after completing her undergraduate degree at the Manhattan School of Music. She was first introduced to the baroque bassoon at the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute in 2010. TBSI 2010-2013

Hayley Pullen is a London, UK-based based musician, specialising in historical bassoons. She holds an honours degree from the Royal Academy of Music, where she received a full scholarship to study. During her time at the Academy, Hayley discovered her love for historically informed performance and is currently in the middle of a Master’s degree in Historical Performance and Research, generously funded by the Leverhulme Trust. Hayley is an active freelance player with period and modern instrument orchestras and is a passionate chamber musician. TBSI 2010

French bassoonist François Viault was admitted to the Conservatory Supérior of Lyon in 2003 in the class of Laurent Lefèvre, where he also studied the baroque bassoon. During this time, Francois continued to further his education in classical and romantic bassoon with the Jeune Orchestre Atlantique. Francois has played in numerous orchestras, including the Opera Bastille, La Petite Bande, l’Ensemble Matheus, Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera Tours, Auvergne Orchestra, l’Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse , l’Orchestre Colonne, l’Orchestre Lamoureux, Le Palais Royal, Ensemble Caprice, Arion Orchestra, and Les Violons du Roy. Settled in Montreal for almost three years, François is actively involved in the musical life of the city.

VIOLIN

Alexis Brett holds a BMUS degree from McGill University, and a Master’s degree from the Royal Academy of Music in London, England, where she studied with Simon Standage. She has performed with ensembles throughout Europe and Canada, and now lives in Toronto. TBSI 2003

A versatile chamber and orchestral musician, violinist Natalie Carducci has recently performed with Bach Collegium San Diego, Pacific Bach Project, the San Francisco Bach Choir, El Mundo, and is a founding member of MUSA and the Alchemy Trio. When she's not playing or teaching, one can usually find her riding her bike. TBSI 2009

Vanessa Castillo (playing both the and viola for TWI) pursued a Bachelor's Degree in Violin Performance at Arizona State University and then a Master's for Historical Performance on Baroque Violin at Indiana University, where she is currently working on a Performer's Diploma. She is also currently learning how to build and repair . TBSI 2009, 2013

Violinist Allene Chomyn holds a MMus from the University of Toronto and is in her seventh season as a first violinist in the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. She has been playing baroque violin since 2011 and currently studies privately with Jeanne Lamon. TBSI 2011, 2013; TWI 2013

The Québecoise violinist Noémy Gagnon-Lafrenais is currently based in Brooklyn, NY, where she is attempting to create a bridge between the historical performance movement and the so- called modern scene. Currently enrolled at the Juilliard School in the Historical Performance Program, Noémy has also worked with Elizabeth Blumenstock, Corey Jamason, and Elisabeth Reed. She took part in the American Bach Soloists Academy and performed as a soloist in the Berkeley Festival. Noémy also holds an Artist Certificate in Chamber Music and MMus from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Recent professional engagements include San Francisco Bach Choir and the concertmaster position of Parnassus Symphony. Transmitting the love of music is important to Noémy: she has taught at Starr King Elementary School’s after- school program (San Francisco), at University of California in Berkeley’s Young Musicians Program, at Stage Musical d’Été Vivaldi in France, and the Camp Musical de l’Estrie in Québec.

Valerie Gordon is originally from Denver, Colorado and has recently completed a Master’s degree at Indiana University, where she was the recipient of an Associate Instructorship studying baroque violin with professor Stanley Ritchie. Recent activities include performances with Aradia Ensemble and Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra. Valerie is a founding member of Elixir Baroque Ensemble, and is on the faculty of the Laurier String Academy and the Kingsway Conservatory in Toronto.

Elyssa Lefurgey-Smith’s musical studies began at the age of five under Heilwig von Koenigsloew at the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music in British Columbia. Since moving to Toronto in 2007 Elyssa has performed with the Aradia Ensemble, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Opera Atelier, Talisker Players, Opera in Concert, Orchestra London, and the Hamilton Philharmonic. Elyssa has been invited to perform as a guest artist with the IFURIOSI Baroque Ensemble and the Windemere Quartet, and has appeared as a soloist with the Corktown Chamber Orchestra. Elyssa is an active teacher and the founder of the Bellwoods Academy of Music, which opened its doors September 2013. She is a co-founder of the Elixir Baroque Ensemble that has many wine-and-cheese chamber music concert sightings in its new studio home, Artscape Youngplace. TBSI 2006, 2007

Originally from St. Catharines, Ontario, Peter Lekx performs extensively on baroque violin and viola, as well as medieval strings. Currently based in Cleveland, he is artistic director of Burning River Baroque, and has performed with various ensembles including Baroque & Beyond, Bourbon Baroque, Cambridge Concentus, Cascata, Kentucky Baroque, hūmAnómalin, Mallarmé Chamber Players, Music for a while, New Comma Baroque, North Carolina Baroque Orchestra, and Quicksilver. With Cambridge Concentus, he toured Japan under the baton of Joshua Rifkin. Known also for his exciting interpretations of contemporary music on modern viola, he has premiered many new compositions. Peter completed his Performance Diploma at Boston University, and holds both a MMus (Penn State University) and a BMus (Wilfrid Laurier University) in Viola Performance.

Victoria Melik is a fourth-year student of violin performance at Wilfrid Laurier University, studying baroque violin with Jeanne Lamon and modern violin with Jerzy Kaplanek. She became interested in historically informed performance in 2010 and has since participated in masterclasses and projects in France, Italy, the UK, Austria, and Canada. Victoria plans to pursue a MMus degree in historical performance. TBSI 2012, 2013

Michelle Odorico converted to baroque violin in 2012 at the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute. She is currently completing her master’s degree at the University of Toronto, studying with Jeanne Lamon. TBSI 2012, 2013; TWI 2013

Praised as an “exceptional talent” by the Frankfurter Neve Presse, violinist Jessica Park currently performs with Handel and Haydn society, Trinity Baroque Orchestra, L’Académie, and New York Baroque Incorporated. She was a fellow of the Yale School of Music as a member of the Yale Baroque Ensemble, and holds two degrees from the Julliard School. TBSI 2011

Violinist Jeremy Rhizor is known for his thoughtful, passionate, and emotive playing as well as his compelling ensemble leadership. His accomplishments include the formation of a conductorless collaborative orchestra at the Eastman School of Music and the editing, graphic design, and hand binding of a wide-ranging collection of Christian prayers and readings. He benefits from the guidance and direction of his teachers Monica Huggett and Cynthia Roberts at the Juilliard School, as well as Paul O’Dette, Christel Thielmann, and Oleh Krysa at Eastman. He earned a BMus and a Performer’s Certificate from Eastman and is pursuing a MMus degree at Juilliard.

VIOLA

Renate Falkner is a former member of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and performs regularly with Boston Baroque, Artis-Naples, Jacksonville Symphony, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Summer appearances have included the Verbier and Spoleto Festivals, and the Bellingham Festival of Music. Currently, she is a faculty member of the University of North Florida. TBSI 2008; TWI 2013

Originally from New York, Bennett Mahler has been enjoying an active and diverse career as a violist, singer, and church musician in Montreal. He has completed Bachelor's and Master's degrees at McGill University, studying modern viola with André Roy and baroque viola with Hélène Pouffe. Bennett regularly performs with ensembles such as l'Orchestre symphonique de la Vallée-Du-Haut-Saint-Laurent, Les Lys Naissants, Voces Boreales, and One Equall Musick. Recent projects include a performing and educational collaboration with the Silpakorn Summer Music School and Siam Society in Bangkok, Thailand, and a complete performance of Bach's Clavier-Übung III with organist Hans-Ola Ericsson in the 2013 Montréal Bach Festival.

Daniel McCarthy is a graduate student at The Juilliard School, a member of the first class of baroque violists ever to be accepted there. Recent concerts include performances on violin with Paul Leenhouts, viola with Monica Huggett, viola d'amore under Maszzki Suzuki, and viola da gamba with Jordi Savall. TBSI 2012

VIOLONCELLO

Currently a DMA student, French cellist Léa Birnbaum recently received a Master’s degree in Historical Performance from The Juilliard School. Keen about orchestral playing, she performed with the National Arts Centre Orchestra as an Apprentice in 2012-13. Léa has played chamber music concerts with Robert Mealy, Cynthia Robert, and Christoph Hammer, and performed throughout Europe, Asia, and North Africa under William Christie, Jordi Savall, Maxim Vengerov, Suzana Malki, and Mazaaki Suzuki. Léa received her modern training with Philippe Muller, Roland Pidoux, and Karina Georgian at the Paris Conservatoire. Léa plays on a baroque cello loaned by the Fond Instrumental Francais, and is a recipient of the Société Générale and Adami Awards.

Evan Buttar began his cello studies at a young age in Vancouver, and is now a fourth-year undergraduate student of Paul Marleyn at the University of Ottawa. Since his first baroque experience at TBSI 2011, period performance has become a passion and the direction for his future studies. TBSI 2011, 2013

A cellist, artist, and designer, Shane Neill's endeavours interweave history, theory, and politics in music and architectural projects. Currently completing a Master of Architecture at the University of Waterloo, he also received performance degrees from Indiana University, where his mentors included Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, Miriam Fried, and Stanley Ritchie.

Cellist Andrea Stewart has appeared as soloist and chamber musician in venues across North America, and can be heard with such ensembles as collectif9, Gruppo Montebello, Matt Haimovitz and Uccello, Ensemble Portmantô, and Ensemble Caprice. Based in Montreal, Quebec, Andrea is a Doctoral candidate at McGill University, where she holds a Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council in Canada.

DOUBLE BASS

Performing in Montreal since 2004, bassist Thibault Bertin-Maghit is a graduate of the Université de Montréal (MMus 2009) and the founder of collectif9 (2011). Thibault can be heard in concerts of varying genres, from early music to contemporary, folk music to rock. With his all-string band collectif9, Thibault brings classical music to a rock band context. TBSI 2011, TWI 2013

Andrew Goodlett joined the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra as the orchestra's Assistant Principal Double Bass this past September. He was a participant in the TBSI program in 2013 and is excited to return as a TWI participant. Andrew is also a violist da gamba and recently started studying the harpsichord. TBSI 2013

THEORBO

After discovering music at age sixteen, Rogan Bogaert pursued studies in classical guitar, and decided to take up the renaissance lute and theorbo while in his first year of undergraduate studies at Western University in London, Ontario. He is currently completing a MA in Musicology at Western and continues to play the lute, letting his interest in historical performance and his academic pursuits inform and complement each other. TBSI 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013

HARPSICHORD

Lysiane Boulva performs regularly in Canada and Europe, and since moving to Toronto has played with I FURIOSI and the Academy Concert Series, among others. She holds a Masters from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, NL, and is now pursuing a doctorate at the University of Toronto, researching French harpsichord music of the mid-18th century. TBSI 2002, 2003, 2007; Continuo Team 2009, 2011-2013; TWI 2013

Rona Nadler is active in Montreal as a harpsichordist, piano accompanist, and singer. She has appeared with ensembles such as Les Voix Baroques, La Rose des Vents, and the Orford Festival Orchestra. She holds a MMUS in Early Music Performance from McGill University where she studied with Hank Knox and William Porter. TBSI 2004

Wesley Shen is a Toronto-based harpsichordist and pianist. Having completed studies on both instruments at the University of Toronto, he works regularly as a soloist, accompanist, and chamber and orchestral musician. His interests lie both in new music and baroque music. One of his current projects is to commission new works for harpsichord, in order to help revive the instrument as a contemporary musical medium.
