This year's final sees Newtonmore attempt to defend the trophy they won last year after an epic battle with Kyles Athletic. Fraser Mackintosh scored the extra-time winner on that occasion and now they return for their 4th MacAulay Cup Final in 5 years. Commentary comes from Hugh Dan MacLennan and Drew MacNeil while Gary Innes provides expert analysis. She has experienced the ups and downs of life as an elite athlete but throughout has had one goal in sight - to compete for her country. Over the course of a year, this documentary follows Kerry's gruelling schedule in the lead up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games as she strains every sinew to race for Scotland. GMQ/LG MONDAY 24 AUGUST TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS /BBC WEEK 34 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Transsexual Stories NEW Monday 24 August BBC One Scotland, 10.35-11.35pm This compelling new documentary provides an insight into the lives of transgender people in contemporary Scotland. Featuring the stories of transgender people across the country, it reflects on the challenges they face as they make the difficult transition – physically and emotionally - from male to female. Anne is a Perth bus driver, who used to be called Neville. As one passenger cheerily explains Anne is a lot nicer and less grumpy than Neville was, and a better driver. While Anne’s former soldier friends are more than happy to meet up in the pub, acceptance is not always so forthcoming. Jan, from Midlothian – who is channelling her experiences into a new venture into stand-up comedy – has made it her mission to try to educate people and promote greater understanding about issues of sexual identity. As she says: “I didn’t change to my sex to have sex…It’s about sexual identity.” As she talks to a group of beauty students about the challenges transgender people have had in the past and what they continue to battle, some are reduced to tears. Acceptance and prejudice in the wider community are shown, with the taunts noted but also the fun of septuagenarian Gladys – who died after filming was completed – leading the singing in her local. But the programme also conveys the emotional highs and lows of people making this journey; dealing with mood swings from hormones or revelling in being oneself and openly enjoying such simple things as choosing clothes to wear. As one of the contributors says: “You’ve spent so many years suppressed and all of a sudden you’re just unleashed”. Transsexual Stories is a Peachtree Films production. HM _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ High Notes and Sore Throats: 50 Years of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus NEW Monday 24 August BBC Two Scotland, 10.00-10.30pm The Edinburgh International Festival has its own choir – the Edinburgh Festival Chorus which has appeared at every Festival since 1965. This year, as well as singing the usual Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart, they feature in a unique outdoor event to celebrate their 50th anniversary. For one night only, the exterior of Edinburgh’s Usher Hall will form the backdrop for spectacular animations set to music sung by the Chorus and created from data from the singers’ own bodies. This film follows the creation of this extraordinary show and profiles some of the Chorus’s 130 dedicated singers to discover the joy they find in singing together.
