To provide an historical context, the thesis begins by summarizing contemporary accounts of how rapid urbanisation affected the lives of middle-class women. These records suggest what is also reflected in fiction of the period: by careful negotiation of social codes, women were able to find considerable latitude in the city for experimenting with different kinds of femininity. Turning next to selected novels of the Scottish writer Mary Brunton and Jane Austen, the thesis examines the evolution of a distinctive version of "domestic woman" shaped by urban influences. In Brunton's work, this new figure serves as a mediator between traditional and modern economies; in Austen's novel, the heroine unsettles images of the gentry estate as stable, enclosed and enduring. Next, the thesis identifies in the prose works and fiction of Mary Robinson, the Countess of Blessington, Elizabeth Inchbald and Elizabeth Hamilton, the presence of a "semi-detached fldneuse," a trope encapsulating feminine urban experiences. Taking pleasure in being part of the London scene, the fldneuse also justifies her presence in the city through the reformative functions she undertakes. Finally, the thesis looks at three London novels by Maria Edgeworth which depict heroines training themselves to take part in the political life of the nation by engaging in public sphere critical discourses. Moving into the foreground the largely overlooked relationship of women and the city, this dissertation shows that women's fiction developed new constructions of femininity, uniting the nurturing values of the ideal domestic woman with the rationality and agency born of modern urban experience. The novel of sentiment thus iv emerges as more layered and complex than often charged, capable of confronting large themes and registering the transition of Britain from a homogeneous, settled, rural society to a diverse, mobile urban one. v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I have had the immense good fortune to work under the supervision of Dr. Ina Ferris whose enthusiasm, discernment, and exacting editing were invaluable in helping to transform a vague hunch into a firm conviction that middle-class women must be considered in discussions about Romantic London. PREFACE Writing from London to her sister Cassandra in 1813, Jane Austen described a day of riding about the city in a carriage, visiting shops and making calls. She reported, "I liked my solitary elegance very much, & was ready to laugh all the time, at my being where I was. — I could not but feel that I had naturally small right to be parading about London in a barouche."1 Austen's reaction to her expedition — a mixture of delight and unease — is echoed in a number of novels written by women during the Romantic period (circa 1780- 1830), works that depict their middle-class heroines testing the possibilities of urban experience even while acutely aware that their claim to a place in the city might be challenged. My dissertation, "Women and the City in Novels of the Romantic Period," considers how the conjunction of feminine body and metropolitan space helped shape women's writing at a pivotal moment in the history of all three categories named in its title: women, the city, the novel. It looks at representations of women negotiating the metropolis spatially and socially in selected British fiction in order to investigate how writers used the novel not only to express an understanding of the centrality of the city within modern life but also to explore a dynamic relationship between women and urban space. Critical analysis of fiction written at the turn of nineteenth century tends to assume an essential opposition between women and the city. Gary Kelly, for example, has identified the novel as an important weapon in a cultural revolution whereby the professional middle- class joined with rural gentry to supplant an aristocratic court culture and establish a new 1 Jane Austen, Jane Austen's Letters, ed.     Mary Brunton (1778-1718) by Ruth Facer Few readers today have heard of Mary Brunton. Although labelled ‘the forgotten Scottish novelist’ by Mary McKerrow in the title of her recent biography,[1] her work has not been entirely unknown. In her own time, in the words of her husband, Alexander Brunton, who wrote a full and touching Memoir of his wife, ‘they [her novels] rose very fast into celebrity, and their popularity seems to have as quickly sunk away.’[2] Contemporary criticism of Brunton’s fiction included some gentle ironic comments by Jane Austen in her letters, while her religious didacticism clearly appealed to early Victorian readers who were able to enjoy several further editions of her fiction between 1837 and 1852. Her first novel, Self-Control, was translated into French in 1829. In recent years her writing has been resurrected both in Britain and in the States. Her three works of fiction, Self-Control (1811), Discipline (1814), and Emmeline with some other pieces, (1819) were published in paperback in the late twentieth century, and are currently available on an internet website.[3] The daughter of an army officer, Colonel Thomas Balfour of Elwick, and Frances Ligonier, sister of the second earl of Ligonier, Mary Brunton came from an upper class Scottish family. She was born on 1 November 1778 on Burray, Orkney. Her education was limited; according to her husband’s Memoir, her father had little leisure to teach her and her mother was more trained to ‘the accomplishments which adorn court, than to those which are useful in domestic life.’[4] However, her mother did teach her music, Italian and French, although when Mary was 16, ‘the charge of her father’s household devolved upon her’,[5] lasting for nearly four years.

The Waverley-like wanderer is thrown into confusion when he encounters the exotic flora and fauna that thrive on the periphery of his united kingdom. However, less well- known – but deserving equal attention – is the strategy of other writers of the period who adopt and reverse the trope in a remarkable way. Not only do they explore the nature of northern Britain, but also process the narrator’s reactions in order to defamiliarise his/her own views and cultural background. In other words, what is foregrounded is not simply life beyond the “stupendous barrier” – as Scott put it – but the psychology of the incomers. The writers whose work will be used to illustrate this paper are Mary Brunton, Susan Ferrier and Christian Isobel Johnstone.

Mary Balfour Brunton. was born in 1778 into a well­ to-do family living on Burray. one of the Orkney Islands off the north coast of Scotland. Most of her education took place at home, where she learnt French, Italian and music, and in 179R she married Alexander Brunton (a Presbyterian minister and later Professor of Oriental Languages at the University of Edinburgh), who encouraged her studies in philosophy, literature, German and Gaelic. A second novel, Discipline, appeared in 1814 and the unfinished Emmeline was published in 1818, subsequent to her death at the age of forty after giving birth to a stillborn son. Brunton's stated aims in writing Self-Col/trol were 'to show the power of the religious principle in bestowing self-command' and 'to bear testimony against a maxim as immoral as indelicate, that a reformed rake makes the best husband'.2 When the novel opens her heroine. the impecunious Laura Montreville, is in mourning for her mother and in love with the handsome and unscrupulous Colonel Hargrave who, not wishing to marry her because of her lack of a fortune, suggests she become his mistress.

As a hedge against this apparent national decline, Britons made frequent recourse to an ideal of national cohesion they called the British “constitution”: in medicine, the constitution (or health) of British bodies; in domestic matters, the constitution of the British family; in science, the constitution of the British atmosphere and landscape; in politics, the constitution of the British polity out of the English, the Welsh, and the Scottish; in government, the constitutional monarchy comprising the House of Lords, the House of Commons, and the king; in jurisprudence, the body of parliamentary law known as the British Constitution. “Constitution” was for Britons a multivalent and powerful term that emphasized the interrelatedness of political, legal, social, environmental, and medical understandings of lived experience.

In doing so, she allotted women a wider socio-political function. Her use of the roles offered by romance and romance criticism was essential to this.
