THE AEGEAN EXPEDITIONS OF BAYEZİD II (H. 903-906/1498-1500) (THE CONQUEST OF LEPANTO, MODON, KORON, AND NAVARINO) E M E L E SÎN * The detailed sources, distinct from the Ottoman chronicles and naval histories, to vvhich references vvill be made, are mainly the follovving: A biography of Bâyezîd II, Târîkh-i Sultân Bâyezîd, 1 to be shortly mentioned as the Târîkh is an anonymous manuscript, vvritten in the reign of Selim I (H. 918-26/1512-20). The vvork is illustrated vvith paintings, of equally unknovvn artists, apparently familiar vvith the related topography. The Târîkh, 2 as vvell as other documents3 narrate that Bâyezîd II ordered the construction of fortifications, on the sea-shores and the frontier regions, and planned expeditions, along the Black Sea and Aegean sea, then called in Turkish Jezâ’ir (the Islands). In the latter area, the Sultan vvanted to dis- mantle the strongholds of Mora (Morea) from vvhere attacks and landings on Ottoman soil vvere started. Hovvever, the Ottoman fleet had to be first strengthened. Müge Bozday TOBB University, Turkey Abstract The aim of the study is to create a model for a reusing a specific cultural setting. Traditional Turkish coffeehouses are selected as a traditional environment. The coffeehouse, which has been used in Turkey since the sixteenth century, is one of the most significant places in the country’s cultural heritage. Coffeehouses are one of the public spaces that represent the place identity of Turkish culture. During the Ottoman period, with their frequent use, people helped these places gain place identities. Moreover, not just the space but the ways in which people become socialized represent an intangible part of our cultural heritage. However, previous studies indicate that this cultural value has not been sufficiently transferred to the present day. This study identifies the traditional Turkish coffeehouse as contributing to both tangible and intangible cultural heritage and generates a model for interpreting the coffeehouse in terms of a contemporary place identity. In order to do this, the concept of place, place identity, and social identity is discussed. Turkish coffeehouses are analyzed to identify and their typical spatial elements. In the conclusion, a model for preserving the typical image of the traditional Turkish coffeehouse is presented. Taking Beirut and Mount Lebanon as a case study, the dissertation focuses on the experience of Ottoman civilians on the homefront and exposes the paradoxes of the Great War, in its totalizing and transformative nature. Focusing on the causes and symptoms of what locals have coined the ‘war of famine’ as well as on international and local relief efforts, the dissertation demonstrates how wartime privations fragmented the citizenry, turning neighbor against neighbor and brother against brother, and at the same time enabled social and administrative changes that resulted in the consolidation and strengthening of bureaucratic hierarchies and patron-client relationships. This dissertation is a detailed analysis of socio-economic challenges that the war posed for Ottoman subjects, focusing primarily on the distorting effects of food shortages, disease, wartime requisitioning, confiscations and conscriptions on everyday life as well as on the efforts of the local municipality and civil society organizations to provision and care for civilians. -

Yakub* PAKİSTAN/PAKISTAN/ПАКИСТАН ABSTRACT This paper focuses on Ottomans liberal policy and tolerance towards the non- Muslims and other religious communities during 15th, 16th century. In particular, it explores the key role of Sultan Mohammad-II in consolidating and harmonizing different cultures and religions across Europe and Asia. The paper also addresses the Islamic attitude towards inter-religious relations, which was at that time quite unknown in rest of Europe, where they were burning its heretics at the stake, whereas races and religions coexisted under the Ottoman rule. It will highlight how the advent of Ottoman Rule in Eastern Europe brought the Muslim and European Civilizations face to face, which ultimately created an interaction among them. Finally, it will describe the image of the millet system introduced during this period, which brought all non-Muslim communities within the Turkish commonwealth, and allowed them to govern itself by its own laws and live in peace in the Ottoman Empire. Many kinds of Ottoman scripts, like Thuluth, Alenstaliq and Tughra'a were used in these inscriptions. Shehada University of Malaya E-mail: [email protected] DOI: 10.18326/ijims.v10i1.127-151 Abstract Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world. It was built by the Canaanites in 3000 B.C., became the first Qibla of Muslims and is the third holiest shrine after Mecca and Medina. It is believed to be the only sacred city in the world that is considered historically and spiritually significant to Muslims, Christians, and Jews alike. Since its establishment, the city has been subjected to a series of changes as a result of political, economic and social developments that affected the architectural formation through successive periods from the beginning leading up to the Ottoman Era, which then achieved relative stability. The research aims to examine and review the conservation mechanisms of the architectural buildings during the Ottoman rule in Jerusalem for more than 400 years, and how the Ottoman Sultans contributed to revitalizing and protecting the city from loss and extinction. The researcher followed the historical interpretive method using descriptive analysis based on a literature review and preliminary study to determine Ottoman practices in conserving the historical and the architectural heritage of Jerusalem. The research found that the Ottoman efforts towards conserving the architectural heritage in Jerusalem fell into four categories (Renovation, Restoration, Reconstruction, and Rehabilitation).
