January 11, 2012 Dear Members of Congress, Since its passage in 1994, the Violence Against Women Act (“VAWA”) has shined a bright light on domestic violence, bringing the issue out of the shadows and into the forefront of our efforts to protect women and families. VAWA transformed the response to domestic violence at the local, state and federal level. Its successes have been dramatic, with the annual incidence of domestic violence falling by more than 50 percent1. Even though the advancements made since in 1994 have been significant, a tremendous amount of work remains and we believe it is critical that the Congress reauthorize VAWA. Every day in this country, abusive husbands or partners kill three women, and for every victim killed, there are nine more who narrowly escape that fate2. We see this realized in our home states every day. Earlier this year in Delaware, three children – ages 12, 2 ½ and 1 ½ − watched their mother be beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend on a sidewalk. In Maine last summer, an abusive husband subject to a protective order murdered his wife and two young children before taking his own life. Reauthorizing VAWA will send a clear message that this country does not tolerate violence against women and show Congress’ commitment to reducing domestic violence, protecting women from sexual assault and securing justice for victims. VAWA reauthorization will continue critical support for victim services and target three key areas where data shows we must focus our efforts in order to have the greatest impact: • Domestic violence, dating violence, and sexual assault are most prevalent among young women aged 16-24, with studies showing that youth attitudes are still largely tolerant of violence, and that women abused in adolescence are more likely to be abused again as adults. -

Romig Dear Alumni and Friends: I am pleased to have this opportunity to share with you some of the exciting things happening at Washburn Law. This fall, the law school welcomed the best-credentialed incoming class in our history. The incoming Class of 2010 is comprised of 169 students, including the fall and January 2010 starters. The total number of applications increased signifi cantly, as did the LSAT scores of the admitted students. These improvements were due, in part, to the re-establishment of the Spring Start Program, allowing for recruiting opportunities in two separate cycles. We were able to be more selective than any time in the recent history of the law school. Our recruiting strategy and our use of scholarships have been very effective and enabled us to retain the most talented applicants. We appreciate your support of our scholarship efforts, and with your ongoing assistance, we will be able to continue to recruit the best students. We know that prospective students weigh law school rankings when deciding which school to attend. Washburn Law moved up in the U.S. News and World Report’s 2011 law school rankings, and our Legal Analysis, Research, and Writing Program was ranked 17th among all U.S. law schools. We recognize that legal writing is a critically important skill for successful lawyers, and it is a strength of Washburn Law. We continue to maintain an excellent student-faculty ratio: 12.9 to 1. -

Schlamme and Hollander, Forty-three state and territorial Attorneys General called on the nation’s leading Video on Demand (“VOD”) streaming companies to reduce youth exposure to tobacco imagery in movies and programs in August 2019. The Attorneys General encouraged the companies to take action, especially in light of the alarming numbers of high school and middle school students using electronic cigarettes.1 Many of the companies and the Motion Picture Association (“MPA”) responded, in part, by asking for Hollywood’s creative community to be included in this important discussion. This bipartisan coalition of Attorneys General now request the Directors Guild of America, Producers Guild of America, Screenwriters Guild of America, Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, and International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (collectively, “the Guilds”) to help us protect young audiences from tobacco use.2 The Attorneys General successfully sued the U.S.’s major tobacco manufacturers in the mid-1990s for, among other misdeeds, promoting tobacco use as safe in television ads and in motion pictures. After settling those lawsuits, many Attorneys General asked film studios to eliminate tobacco imagery in movies for children, including films rated G, PG, and PG- 13. Representatives of the Attorneys General also met with leaders from the creative community in 2003 to share research that found a link between youth exposure to smoking imagery depicted in movies and youth smoking initiation. -

Our public safety officers risk their lives every day to keep us safe but the COVID-19 pandemic has made their sacrifice clearer. As public safety officers in our states have battled the COVID-19 pandemic, they have put themselves at risk while most Americans were able to stay home. When public safety officers are called to respond, they do not know whether they are coming into contact with a person who is positive for COVID-19. 8 My Heart Became Deeply Motivated to Study the Growing Trend Of
8 CHAPTER 1 PASTORAL ATTRITION AND PERSONAL MOTIVATION My heart became deeply motivated to study the growing trend of pastoral attrition after my church, my family, and I experienced a unique set of trials and a period of adversity that stretched into a five-year roller coaster of difficulties. It was cathartic to embark on this study—as difficult as the subject matter is—in view of my personal experience. Now I invite you to join me. As we study the reasons for pastoral attrition, we will hear, repeatedly, the oft-cited reason for collapse or quitting: “ministry pressure.” This is certainly a source of stress and difficulty, but it is not a credible reason for leaving the ministry. God’s grace is sufficient to carry us through the most difficult of circumstances. he spiritual giants profiled in chapter 6 prove that God’s promises can be counted on regardless of the arduous task of our ministries. My personal experience is another reminder of how the Lord can sustain and even open larger doors of ministry service through what is perceived as the worst disappointments. It is this personal motivation that prompted me to include here the details of my own ministry challenge along with the honest recommendations that spring from what I learned. There is no specific seminary course that covered the tumultuous terrain I found myself in as I labored to build a church for Jesus Christ.Acadia Divinity College’s Doctor of Ministry Handbook clarifies exactly what the D. Min. degree is. In addition to being a professional, advanced, and practical degree, it is also an integrated degree.
