  • Will Justify Win the Triple Crown?
Will there be a Triple Crown Winner this year? Mike E. Smith on Justify, Kentucky Derby On May 5, Justify won the Kentucky Derby. There are 2 more thoroughbred horse races that he has to enter and win in order to win the Triple Crown of thoroughbred Racing ... the Preakness and the Belmont. Can he do it? What are his chances? The three races that make up the Triple Crown are the (1) Kentucky Derby, the (2) Preakness Stakes, and the (3) Belmont Stakes. Kentucky Derby races began in 1875; Preakness races began in 1870; and the Belmont began in 1867. But in all of those years since these races began only 12 horses have won all three. Sir Barton won. 1. How many years have elapsed between 1919 and now? There are different ways to look at what might be the most usual gap between winners. We could figure out the gap that occurs most often (mode); or what the mean number of years of a gap is; or what is the most central measurement (median) of the various gaps.

  • Change and Controversy at Glenwood State School
% ■ M Looking bock to the 1950s, how should we picture loum's institutions for those with mental and physical disabilities? Photographs show solid buildings amidst tidy grounds, uniformed staff helping contented residents. Others— like this view of peeling paint and torn curtains at Independence Mental Health Institute in 1959— reveal a darker side. From today's vantage point, we see both truths: how far we had ad vanced as a compassionate, informed, and just society, and how much farther we still had to go. Though often billed as a decade of compla cency, the 1950s witnessed the birth of sweeping changes in under standing and caring for those with mental retardation, changes that have brought us to where we are today. Here's part of that story. — The Editor Contioversy by Becky Wilson Hawbaker ighty years old, Dr. V. J. Meyer was ready to retire. More than a year ago he had agreed to wait until a suitable replacement could be Efound. Now, in the spring of 1957, he was still the superintendent of Glenwood State School, a state institution for people with mental retarda tion, located in Glenwood, Iowa. And despite new construction and re cent remodeling, Meyer himself acknowledged that Glenwood was still woefully overcrowded and understaffed. That May, Meyer's successor arrived: 33-year-old Alfred Sasser Jr. The changes Sasser would make at Glenwood State School would soon cata pult the institution into the national spotlight and add momentum to a Summer 1998 63 K>WA CíTYl JOAN reform movement already sweeping the United States. gration restrictions and quotas targeting the "defec Across the country, parents of children with disabili tive" and the "less desirable" nationalities—meaning, ties were Joined by progressive professionals in psy southern and eastern European immigrants.
