Seventeen Magazine, social responsibility is emerging in 1986 and that means relationships are "in'1 and the casual, free sex of the 60s is "out" One of the places where this is happening is on university campuses. According to an article in USA Today, college students are using more discretion in their attitudes toward casual sex than students of 10 and 20 years ago. The reason is because many college campuses are more conservative now than in the 60s when free love and promiscuity were freely acceptable. People are becoming more self-sufficient and are learning how to say "no." Barb Hutchins, sophomore international business/marketing major, said she agrees. "People are learning to be more independent now," she said. Arthur Neal, professor of sociology at the University, also agrees, but adds that relations will M moving away from the traditional practices like marriage as more people begin to experiment. Traditions and customs are not totally binding anymore," he explained. "There will be more pluralistic models. That is, more styles of relationships. For example, a person can have a stable relationship with two, or even three people at one time. Neal pointed out that more choices in relationships are available because of the increase in cohabitation, open marriages and more of an openness in one's sexual identity and sexual preferences. "Mainly, it's an increase in personal freedom," Neal said. "There is no longer a cultural blueprint for a person to follow." Along with this new outlook on relationships, some of the old values, morals and definitions of relationships still remain.
