He wished everyone an enjoyable afternoon and anticipated that it would be another successful occasion. Concluding, he expressed the appreciation of the Club to the County Committee for deciding to return to the St Patrick’s Club in 2011. -5- 4.0 Miontuairiscí – 2009 The Minutes of the 2010 Convention were adopted on the proposal of B Nelis and seconded by P O’Neill. There were no matters arising. 5.0 Standing Orders On the proposal of G Byrne, Standing Orders were adopted, and were seconded by M Bonnar. 6.0 County Grounds’ Accounts and Balance Sheets 6.1 The Cisteoir, M Harvey presented the Accounts for Healy Park Omagh which indicated a total income of £28 826 and a total expenditure of £63 498 providing an operating loss of £35 272 for the year ending 31st October. 6.2 The Accounts presented for O’Neill Park Dungannon indicated a total income of £52 847 and an expenditure of £55 022 and an operating loss of £2 175. 6.3 No Accounts were provided for Fr Campbell Park Coalisland. 6.4 Both of the County Grounds’ Accounts were adopted on the proposal of C Donnelly, seconded by E Connolly. 7.0 Secretary’s Report 7.1 Speaking on the Senior Hurling team (page 23), P Doris agreed with the Secretary’s appreciation to Tony Fawl and complimented him for all the work that he has put into the hurling team over a number of years, often in very trying circumstances. 7.2 A Gilmore requested that the family of Seamus Glackin be included in the list to which sympathy had been extended (page 39). 7.3 The Report was adopted on the proposal of P Doris which was seconded by A Maguire. 8.0 Sub-Committee Reports 8.1 Referring to the IT Report, D Harvey reminded delegates of the need to be aware that any information included on Clubs’ or other units’ social media sites including ‘Facebook’ and ‘Twitter’ was regarded as an official publication of the Club or unit; therefore the Club or other unit was fully responsible for all such information and each should ensure that responsible officials were in charge of the posting of information. 8.2 Speaking on the Report from the Referees’ Administration subcommittee P Darcy said that there were far too many assessments of referees being undertaken within the county. He was aware that there were 114 assessments undertaken in the current year, with one top referee being given 6 assessments. He thought that one assessment per year should be enough to determine whether a referee was competent and if he wasn’t then a second assessment should be carried out. Too many assessments were a source of distraction to a referee and in many instances were causing unnecessary stress. -6- 8.3 The Hurling Development Officer presented a draft Strategy for the development of the game within the county. 8.4 All subcommittee Reports were adopted on the proposal of S McCullagh which was seconded by J Rafferty. 9.0 Treasurer’s Report 9.1 Prior to commencing his Report the Treasurer was joined by Hugh McAleer representing the accountants. 9.2 Total income for the financial year dropped by over 9% to £828 940 and total expenditure showed a similar decrease (10.3%), to £781 575 providing an operational surplus of £47 365, excluding Club Tyrone donations. The Balance sheet indicated Current Assets valued at £2 566 653 with Current Liabilities of £530 015 giving a net figure of £2 036 638. 9.3 M Harvey confirmed to P Doris that the figure of £2 224 300 under ‘Current Assets – Bank Accounts’ included the loan provided by Croke Park towards the Coaching & Administration Centre development at Garvaghy. 9.4 In a further response to P Doris, the Cisteoir indicated that the 100% rise in costs of meetings was due to outstanding costs carried forward from the previous year which had not been received before the closing of the accounts. If the figures were examined over a two-year period they would be found to be similar. 9.5 In a final query P Doris sought an explanation for there being no Referees’ Expenses for the year; M Harvey explained that at the end of the financial year these expenses had not been received but he could now state that the contra figure for such expenses would be approximately zero. 9.6 M McCaughey congratulated the Finance subcommittee on the good state of the county’s finances but suggested that the income from championship fixtures could be maximized by the Fixtures Planners doing more in the year ahead. 9.7 H McAleer expressed his appreciation to the Treasurer for his work over the last five years and for the support that had been provided by the Clubs.

A Seed is Sown 1884-1900 (1) Before the GAA From the earliest times, the people of Ireland, as of other countries throughout the known world, played ball games'. Games played with a ball and stick can be traced back to pre-Christian times in Greece, Egypt and other countries. In Irish legend, there is a reference to a hurling game as early as the second century B.C., while the Brehon laws of the preChristian era contained a number of provisions relating to hurling. In the Tales of the Red Branch, which cover the period around the time of the birth of Christ, one of the best-known stories is that of the young Setanta, who on his way from his home in Cooley in County Louth to the palace of his uncle, King Conor Mac Nessa, at Eamhain Macha in Armagh, practised with a bronze hurley and a silver ball. On arrival at the palace, he joined the one hundred and fifty boys of noble blood who were being trained there and outhurled them all single-handed. He got his name, Cuchulainn, when he killed the great hound of Culann, which guarded the palace, by driving his hurling ball through the hound's open mouth. From the time of Cuchulainn right up to the end of the eighteenth century hurling flourished throughout the country in spite of attempts made through the Statutes of Kilkenny (1367), the Statute of Galway (1527) and the Sunday Observance Act (1695) to suppress it. Particularly in Munster and some counties of Leinster, it remained strong in the first half of the nineteenth century.

Smythe-Wood Newspaper Index – “A” series – mainly Co Tyrone Irish Genealogical Research Society Dr P Smythe-Wood’s Irish Newspaper Index Selected families, mainly from Co Tyrone ‘Series A’ The late Dr Patrick Smythe-Wood presented a large collection of card indexes to the IGRS Library, reflecting his various interests, - the Irish in Canada, Ulster families, various professions etc. These include abstracts from various Irish Newspapers, including the Belfast Newsletter, which are printed below. Abstracts are included for all papers up to 1864, but excluding any entries in the Belfast Newsletter prior to 1801, as they are fully available online. Dr Smythe-Wood often found entries in several newspapers for the one event, & these will be shown as one entry below. Entries dealing with RIC Officers, Customs & Excise Officers, Coastguards, Prison Officers, & Irish families in Canada will be dealt with in separate files, although a small cache of Canadian entries is included here, being families closely associated with Co Tyrone. In most cases, Dr Smythe-Wood has recorded the exact entry, but in some, marked thus *, the entries were adjusted into a database, so should be treated with more caution. There are further large card indexes of Miscellaneous notes on families which are not at present being digitised, but which often deal with the same families treated below. LOYAL TO ISRAEL: TRANSNATIONAL SOLIDARITY WITH THE ISRAELI- PALESTINIAN CONFLICT A STUDY OF LOYALIST TRANSNATIONAL SOLIDARITY WITH ISRAEL 1 Loyal to Israel: Transnational solidarity with the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Thesis MA Modern Middle East Studies Leiden University Andrew Graham Robertson Page Student number: 1963023 15 January 2018 Supervisor: Dr. Noa Schonmann Words: 21,676 Cover Photo: Adrian McKinty, “Israeli flags in Belfast”, Adrian McKinty Blogspot, accessed January 14, 2018, http://adrianmckinty.blogspot.nl/2015/04/the-israeli-flags-in-belfast.html. Abstract: The Ulster Loyalist community of Northern Ireland have long regarded themselves as a people besieged by Irish Republican ideology. While lacking international support, the Loyalists have formed a geographically and culturally unusual bond with the State of Israel. Loyalist support for Israel increased visibly during the 2002 Intifada and Loyalists continue to make declarations of support for Israel. Yet, the governing Likud Party in recent years has commemorated Zionist insurgents, who committed acts of terror against the British administration in the 1940s. The Israeli government’s actions have led to criticism from the Her Majesty’s British government, which the Loyalist community aims to stand alongside, to maintain the Union and prevent the triumph of Irish Republicanism. Despite British public support for Israel declining during the past few decades, Ulster Loyalist support for the Jewish State is believed to be one of the strongest in Europe. 2 Contents Page
