Appendix 5 Periodicals and Looseleaf Services
Appendix 5 contains two sets of abbreviations, one for titles of periodicals and one for words commonly used in titles of looseleaf services. To help you determine spacing in each abbreviation, each appendix uses the symbol ▲ to designate a required space. Omit this symbol when you type the abbreviation. Follow Rule 2 to properly space abbreviations.
5(A) Law Reviews and Other Periodicals Appendix 5(A) lists periodicals in alphabetical order by the periodical’s cur- rent name. Prior names of a periodical are listed immediately below its current name. Use the abbreviation that corresponds to the volume you are citing; do not use the current abbreviation if citing older volumes. The symbol indicates periodicals that are nonconsecutively paginated; see Rules 21.1 and 21.3 for additional information about citing nonconsecutively paginated periodicals. Although this appendix contains abbreviations for many periodicals, it is not exhaustive. If the name of the periodical is not here, look for individual words from its title. If you do not find an individual word listed, you may use an abbreviation that appears in another title in this appendix, and for geo- graphic references, you may use Appendix 3(B). If you cannot find an abbre- viation for the word in Appendix 5(A) or Appendix 3(B), however, spell it out. Do not use an abbreviation from another appendix, as it may be a word that should not be abbreviated in a periodical name, or it may be abbreviated dif- ferently in another context. Omit the articles “a,” “an,” and “the,” as well as the prepositions “at,” “in,” and “of,” unless a reader would otherwise not be able to discern the publi- cation name; always retain the word “on.” Additionally, if there is only one word remaining in the title after the articles or prepositions are omitted, do not abbreviate the remaining last word. Omit commas in periodical abbreviations, but retain other punctuation. Omit colons, and everything following them, appearing within a title. If the periodical title itself contains an abbreviation, use it in the abbreviated name (e.g., BYU J. Pub. L.).
