HP Storage Essentials simplifies management via views, reports and automation to help manage infrastructure complexity. It manages growth and reduces cost by improving storage utilization across primary & secondary storage sites. Trending based on history and forecast aids just-in-time purchase of additional storage capacity, further improving cost management. HP SE delivers performance management and provisioning for heterogeneous fabrics, arrays, physical and virtual machines and many popular business applications which can help in maintaining SLA.

NOTE: The number of MAPs counted for a storage device is typically specific to FC ports, however in certain cases all physical connections, independent of protocol, including FC, SCSI,

NOTE: A generic storage device placeholder is not managed and therefore does not consume MAPs.

Managed Hosts  A SAN attached server discovered via CIM Extension will count each FC Host Bus Adapter (HBA) port as 1 MAP. Example: A dual ported HBA will count as 2 MAPs.  A standalone server with no FC HBA discovered via CIM Extension will count as 1 MAP  A Windows server discovered agentlessly via WMI will count as 1 MAP minimum or 1 MAP per FC HBA port.  A Linux server discovered agentlessly via SSH will count as 1 MAP minimum or 1 MAP per FC HBA port.  VMware hypervisors (VMware ESX servers) discovered agentlessly will be treated as physical servers and count 1 MAP min or 1 MAP per FC HBA port. Example, 5 ESX servers with 2 dual ported HBAs counts as 10 MAPs (5*2=10)

Note: VMware Gust OS running VMTools are discovered automatically by default.

 Each VMware Virtual Machine Guest OS discovered automatically via VMTools with will count as 1 MAP.  Each VMware Virtual Machine Guest OS discovered directly via WMI (Windows) or SSH (Linux), or CIM Extension will count as 1 MAP.

Licensing based on a per Array basis (for Performance Pack Plug-ins):

Array LTU licensing is determined by the count of multivendor arrays concurrently monitored. For example, if you have 1 supported array you wish to monitor in your Storage Area Network; all you need is 1 - Array LTU. You can also move a license from one supported array to another. For example, the customer has 4 arrays, but only 2 LTUs. However in this scenario you can only collect performance data, without interruption, on the licensed arrays. If you move a license around from a monitored array, you will not collect historical data on unlicensed arrays; therefore you will have gaps in your historical data (data for unlicensed arrays is preserved based on default retention schedule and will be available when a license is re-applied to a given storage array) . For some customers this is acceptable; for a customer who prefers a complete real-time and historical performance history then you want to have 1-Array LTU per storage system. The same logic applies to both HP Storage Essentials Performance Pack and HP Storage Essentials Performance Pack Enterprise software LTUs.

They have four (4) Oracle Database instances they would like to manage and would like to have the option of file-level scanning of their server environment, both of these are supported via SE Application Viewer MALs, The Oracle Database instances will require 1 MAL each (4 MALs) and they will use SE File System Viewer to run file collection from four proxy servers against network volumes/shares with 1MAL per server (4 MALs). Finally, they want an Report Optimizer Concurrent User (CC User) LTU which can be applied to SE Reporter to enable the ability to edit and customize reports based on the details collected from the managed environment. The SE database installation may be on the local server or on a SAN drive. Optionally, customers may externally host Storage Essentials on their own Oracle RAC 11g instance.  HP recommends the use of physical servers for the CMS but supports the option of installation on qualified VMWare Guest OS. There is a ~20% performance impact when running on a virtual server when compared to that of an identically configured physical server. It is required to reserve at least equal CPU and memory resources to the Guest OS as the minimums stated for deployment on a dedicated physical server, and recommended to provide additional resources to mitigate the known performance impact.
