postScriptum: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Literary Studies Online – Open Access – Peer Reviewed ISSN: 2456-7507 postscriptum.co.in Volume II Number i (January 2017) Gupta, Rajarshee. “Popular Indian Cinema in Conversation with ...” pp. 28-40 Popular Indian Cinema in Conversation with Reincarnation: Some Aspects Rajarshee Gupta Assistant Professor in English, Subhas Chandra Bose Centenary College, Murshidabad The author did his MA and MPhil from University of Calcutta. He currently teaches as Assistant Professor at the Department of English, Subhas Chandra Bose Centenary College, Lalbagh, Murshidabad. Abstract The paper strives to explore various facets of reincarnation as a theme or device in popular Indian cinema. Reincarnation has been a popular theme in Indian cinema since the early days of Indian film industry. The take of Indian cinema on the subject is very different from that of World cinema or Hollywood; its root can be traced back to traditional Indian philosophy professing Karma and the concept of rebirth. The cyclic pattern of birth and death as professed in Indian philosophy is reflected in a number of ways in the reincarnations movies: through the repetitive usage of various tropes of music, image and also by adopting a cyclic narrative structure. Reincarnation as a theme attributes to the scope of retelling love stories and revenge sagas, thus enhancing the melodramatic ‘masala’ nature of popular Indian cinema. The movies largely dwell upon and invest in the concept of immortality of the soul and eternal love between the lovers spanning over births.

  • Laxmikant-Pyarelal : the Music Kings of Hindi Cinema
Laxmikant-Pyarelal : The Music Kings of Hindi Cinema Songs and Music are the integral part of Indian cinema. Be it Hindi films or regional movies, the department of music is given utmost attention by the makers. Indian film industry is more than hundred years old. The first film in India was made by Dadasaheb Phalkey in. The title of this film was ‘Raja Harishchandra’. It was a silent movie made in 1913 and based on Hindu mythology. In the beginning the Indian movies used to be silent but in 1930s the sound was added to the films and the first talkie of the Indian cinema was ‘Alam Ara’ made by Ardeshir Irani and released in 1931. Subsequently colour was added to the films and India’s first indigenously made colour movie was ‘Kisan Kanya’ again produced by Ardeshir Irani and directed by Moti. B. Gidwani. This film was released in 1937. We can say that with this film an era of colour cinema ushered in India. In 1930s songs started featuring in Indian films, especially Hindi films. But, in the beginning the actors acting in the films used to sing the songs themselves. Many Indians still relish or enjoy the songs sung by ‘Dadamuni’ Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani in 1930s and these songs were picturised on them in the films. By the beginning of the 1940s the play-back singing became the major features of Hindi cinema. By this time great singers like K. L. Saigal, Noor Jehan, Johrabai Ambalawali, Shamshad Begum, etc. had established themselves as the lead singers.

  • Accounts of Maleness in Indian Man-To-Animal Transformation Horror Films
Shape Shifting Masculinities: Accounts of maleness in Indian man-to-animal transformation horror films Mithuraaj Dhusiya University of Delhi Abstract. Unlike the werewolf myth, on which there is a significant corpus of takes in Hollywood cinema, Indian horror films abound in snake-, tiger- and gorilla- transformations. Most of these shape-shifting monsters represent aberrant subjectivities that set in motion a cycle of destruction and redemption within these narratives. This article will explore how the male body in Indian horror films acts as a site of different bodily discourses that permits a reading of socio-cultural crises within the societal framework. Although there are almost a dozen Indian horror films to date that deal with such shape-shifting monsters, this article will limit itself to studying one Hindi filmJaani Dushman (1979, dir. Raj Kumar Kohli) and one Telugu filmPunnami Naagu (1980, dir. A. Rajasekhar). The following core questions will be explored: do these narratives challenge the constructions of hegemonic masculinity? What departures from normative masculinity, if such a thing exists at all, take place? How do these narratives use horror codes and conventions to map the emergence of different types of masculinities? How can these bodily discourses be correlated with various contemporary socio-political issues of India? Animals in Indian cinema outside of the genre of horror films have largely been portrayed sympathetically: for example, the domesticated animal is lauded for its ability to perform human-like actions as well as serve as a loyal companion to its human counterparts. In fact, the animal world has been constantly telescoped through human emotions, i.e., the closer such an animal appears to exhibit idealised ‘humane’ virtues, the more it is lauded or valorised.

The term Masala, often used to refer to all Bollywood films, has become one of the most popular genres of Bollywood. The ‘angry young man’ era of the 1970s and 1980s has lost its popularity in the last two decades as a self-conscious genre cinema has developed in Bollywood.
