5 Your Carolinas Golf Association

The Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) was founded in 1909 and has grown from fi ve to more than 700 member clubs. The fact that you are reading this book suggests you belong to a CGA member club and you are interested in your association. We want to tell you about the CGA and the benefi ts of membership. The CGA is a 501(c)3 non-profi t service organization. The CGA bylaws are listed elsewhere in this publication. The CGA conducts 35 major championships, including the Carolinas Amateur, as well as fi ve team competitions and qualifying events for USGA championships. These serve to identify the best players in the Carolinas; but the CGA tournament schedule reaches golfers of all abilities. The CGA also conducts one-day handicap tournaments for players of all skill levels, one-day senior four-ball tournaments, and one-day events for junior and women golfers. These fun events attract more than 14,000 entries a year. The CGA administers the USGA handicap system in the Carolinas by offering both an “at-club” and an “at-home” internet-based computerized system with a top tournament management package through Golfnet. The CGA pioneered computerized handicaps in 1963 and continues to offer premiere services at a low cost to members. The CGA hired a Director of Women’s Golf in 1997, evidence of the association’s dedication to serving all segments of Carolinas golfers. The CGA’s Tarheel Youth Golf Association promotes the future of the game. TYGA, which has more than 2,000 members, works to complement existing junior golf programs and help create new ones. TYGA provides rankings for North Carolina juniors and serves as a clearinghouse for junior tournament information. “Carolinas Golf” magazine is mailed quarterly free of charge to members of CGA member clubs. Clubs are encouraged to send membership rosters (and annual membership additions) to the CGA to get issues of “Carolinas Golf” to members. The CGA was the fi rst regional golf association to offer an agronomy service. Dr. Leon Lucas of Apex, N.C. visits member clubs, free of charge, a service the CGA has provided since 1982. On-site turf management consultation can be arranged for expenses only, and unlimited telephone help is available at no extra cost. Dr. Lucas uses the North Carolina State University and Clemson University agronomy services for soil testing. Don’t miss this opportunity to help your club’s turf. The CGA measures member courses free of charge. The CGA staff also oversees more than two dozen course and slope rating teams of men and women. These teams rate or re-rate more than 100 courses each year. The CGA offers in-club seminars to review the Rules of Golf and handicapping procedures — again free of charge — to member clubs. The CGA staff answers Rules of Golf questions (phone or e-mail). The CGA schedules regular seminars for club offi cers to learn more about the CGA and how we can help better our member clubs. The CGA pager service provides quick rules help to member clubs with Rules of Golf questions on weekends and holidays. The CGA acknowledges members’ holes in one through the “CGAcer” program. The CGA sends certifi cates to more than 400 acers each year. The CGA is an outpost for the USGA and is involved with questions about amateur reinstatement and status.

6 The Carolinas Golf Foundation The Carolinas Golf Foundation was formed by the Carolinas Golf Association in 1977 to provide support for universities and technical schools involved in golf-oriented turfgrass research. Since its inception the Foundation has grown to include promoting and supporting junior golf, women’s golf, turfgrass research and management and many other worthwhile Carolinas golf projects. The Foundation is funded by the CGA and by contributions from individuals who want to invest in the future of golf. According to Internal Revenue Service regulations, the Foundation must generate at least 10 percent of its receipts from golfers who want to give back something to our game. Contributions to the foundation are tax deductible. In the last 34 years, the foundation has raised more than $1,500,000, emphasizing how these grants can beneﬁ t golf in the Carolinas. Scholarships The foundation’s scholarship program supports students who are aspiring to become golf superinten- dents and turfgrass managers in the Carolinas. In 2010, the Carolinas Golf Foundation underwrote grants to turfgrass majors at Clemson University and North Carolina State University. Individual grants varied in value up to $2,000. Charles E. Lynch Jr., CGA Counsel, noted, “This year’s winners are the men and women who will di- rect tomorrow’s turf programs. They will discover solutions for future turfgrass problems. We are pleased to participate in endowing this ongoing program.” The Carolinas Golf Foundation ﬁ rst offered scholarship aid to turfgrass majors in 1977. Turfgrass Research Projects The Carolinas Golf Foundation also concentrates research grant aid at Clemson University and North Carolina State University. Studies at Clemson have focused on development of new grasses to be used in the grass transition zone, which covers the Carolinas. The Foundation recently sponsored a two-year study by Dr. Bruce Martin at Clemson University. Dr. Martin studied the effects of various soils on two different and new kinds of Bermudagrasses -- TifEagle and Miniverdi. His goal is to provide Carolinas courses with the best soil and fertilizer management practices for these grasses to combat the hot, arid summers and continued water quality issues. Player Development The Foundation supports many aspects of women’s golf and junior golf throughout the Carolinas. Dona- tions are made to the Women’s Carolinas Golf Association, North Carolina Women’s Golf Association, South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation, and many other worthy volunteer groups. How You Can Help All contributions to the Carolinas Golf Foundation are tax deductible and go directly to various Carolinas programs. The CGA absorbs administrative costs of the Foundation. 20 The Richard S. Tufts Awards - CGA Players of the Year The Richard S. Tufts Awards were established in 1997 to honor Carolinas amateur golfers who had exceptional individual tournament performances over the preceding year. Tufts served on the CGA Executive Committee from 1926 to 1964 and served as President from 1931 through 1933. The awards are given to the number one golfer based on the CGA amateur rankings at the end of the calendar year in each of four categories: Men, Women, Senior Men and Senior Women. The Junior Boys and Junior Girls awards are based on a series of junior tournaments run by nine associations that are the grassroots of junior golf in the Carolinas. Participating Carolinas associations and tournaments are the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA), Carolinas PGA (CPGA), Trusted Choice Big I Junior Classics, South Carolina Golf Association (SCGA), Women’s Carolinas Golf Association (WCGA), Women’s South Carolina Golf Association (WSCGA), South Carolina Junior Golf Association (SCJGA), Tarheel Youth Golf Association (TYGA) and the Joe Cheves Junior Invitational.
