Music Inspired by Astronomy, Organized by Topic An Annotated Listing by Andrew Fraknoi © copyright 2019 by Andrew Fraknoi. All rights reserved. Used with permission. Borresen: At Uranienborg Cage: Atlas Eclipticalis Glass: Orion Connections between astronomy and music have been proposed since the time of the ancient Greeks. This annotated listing of both classical and popular music inspired by astronomy restricts itself to music that has connections to real science -- not just an astronomical term or two in the title or lyrics. For example, we do not list Gustav Holst’s popular symphonic suite The Planets, because it draws its inspiration from the astrological, and not astronomical, characteristics of the worlds in the solar system. Similarly, songs like Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” or the Beatles’ “Across the Universe” just don’t contain enough serious astronomy to make it into our guide. When possible, we give links to a CD and a YouTube recording or explanation for each piece. The music is arranged in categories by astronomical topic, from asteroids to Venus. Additions to this list are most welcome (as long as they follow the above guidelines); please send them to the author at: fraknoi {at} fhda {dot} edu Table of Contents Asteroids Meteors and Meteorites Astronomers Moon Astronomy in General Nebulae Black Holes Physics Related to Astronomy Calendar, Time, Seasons Planets (in General) Comets Pluto Constellations Saturn Cosmology SETI (Search for Intelligent Life Out There) Earth Sky Phenomena Eclipses Space Travel Einstein Star Clusters Exoplanets Stars and Stellar Evolution Galaxies and Quasars Sun History of Astronomy Telescopes and Observatories Jupiter Venus Mars 1 Asteroids Coates, Gloria Among the Asteroids on At Midnight (on Tzadik).

  • Dylan Thomas's “Lament”: a Poet of Human Reality S
European Journal of English Language and Literature Studies Vol.8, No.7, pp.20-75, October 2020 Published by ECRTD- UK Print ISSN: 2055-0138(Print), Online ISSN: 2055-0146(Online) DYLAN THOMAS’S “LAMENT”: A POET OF HUMAN REALITY S. Bharadwaj Department of English, Annamalai University, Annamalainagar, India E-mail:[email protected] ABSTRACT: In the poem “Lament,” Dylan Thomas moans that Auden’s art songs are all sarcastic about the political and the war poets’ ignorance of metaphysical process of intensity, their conflicting love of mortal desires while keeping himself to ascetic aloofness, indifferent to the sufferings of the lovers of his art song. Auden’s songs of self-renunciation, self- denunciation, and Annunciation are his long stream of exploits and harvests of the fellow- poets’ ignorance. Quite contrastingly, Thomas’s art songs, while directing the suffering ignorant poets to the Yeatsian introspective process of life and death, individuation and integration, mortal vision of Grecian altruistic art song, offer a hope for poetry and promising future and happy life. In the poem “Lament,” there is further perception that Auden’s pursuit of immortal vision of immortal art itself may be as unsubstantial and illusory as all the dreaming lovers of Auden’s art. What Thomas shows in the poem is the Yeatsian paradoxical truth, the Yeatsian introspective process of transfiguration and transformation that assures him of Grecian philanthropic impersonal art. He finds that Yeats’s mortal vision of pagan philanthropic impersonal art and human reality is analogous to the sceptic poetic tradition of Thomas Hardy, A.E. Houseman and William Blake.

  • Paths to Witnessing, Ethics of Speaking Out
Introduction: Paths to Witnessing, Ethics of Speaking Out Nancy L. Rosenblum riting about the threat of nuclear catastrophe in The Fate of the Earth, Jonathan Schell observed: “the act of thinking about it is always vol- W untary, and the choice of not thinking about it is always available.”1 The same can be said for most of us, most of the time, when it comes to the un- thinkable of unchecked climate change. But the choice is not available to men and women whose work is to comprehend the radical dangers of climate change, and to act on what they know. For the authors in this issue of Dædalus–along with many other scientists, doctors, public health experts, social scientists, lawyers, journalists, business consultants, and military officers–climate change shapes their professional identity and expands their sense of responsibility. They find thinking about its many elements within strict disciplinary confines constraining, and the codes of professional ethics that govern day-to-day practice inadequate. The extraordinary challenges they confront require more. They push the bounds of their fields and they push themselves to becomewitnessing professionals. The term witnessing professionals is not part of common parlance. Yet we need a name for those who speak out from the vantage point of their specialized knowledge about the dangers posed by crises like climate change. In this volume, the authors reflect on their paths into climate work and bearing witness to what they know. Each focuses on a different aspect of climate change’s effects and re- sponses to it, so that this constellation of essays helps us grasp that climate change is not one single fearful thing.
