All students will be prepared and movated to meet the challenges of a dynamic global society in which they !collaborate, contribute, and flourish through universal access to people, informaon and ideas. 21st Century Learning is lifelong learning, with technology. Students develop the capacity to locate, consume, analyze, and evaluate informaon; then to create knowledge. To be literate in the 21st century is no longer simply having the ability to read and write; rather, it must also include technological fluency and disposional aributes such as creavity, teamwork, systems thinking, responsibility, self-assessment, and inquiry. We should expect students not only to master these skills but also to apply and demonstrate them !through authenc and engaging acvies and assessments. 8 Criteria for Success 1. Technology is seamlessly embedded into the fabric of the student learning experience. 2. All educators will use 21st century skills and knowledge to effecvely embed educaonal technology as necessary to enable students to achieve. 3. LHN will improve and maintain a user-focused technology infrastructure that is reliable, supported, and relevant to today. 4. All students and staff will have access to the tools of technology and informaon for learning. 5. ! ! LHN 1 to 1 Technology Program Policy

Grades !All students in Grades 9–12. General LHN students should: • Understand and follow the spirit of the LHN Acceptable Use Agreement when using the iPad. • Follow these guidelines, specific school or agreements, as well as the student use ! expectaons pertaining to the use of the laptop. Backup Students are responsible for their own backup. Considering that a large poron of each student’s schoolwork will be on the iPad, making sure this work is safe and readily accessible is vital to the program. LHN recommends the following backup methods: 1. Turning on and maintaining an iCloud backup 2. Backing up data in specific apps to cloud services such as dropbox ! 3. Occasionally transferring finished files to a personal computer iPad at End of Life The iPad is the property of LHN, and must be returned to LHN each school year. At the end of our three year lease program, LHN MAY opt to sell used to students at their current resale value. The money from the purchase will be used to support the LHN technology department and any upgrades that are needed. Failure to return the iPad may result in being billed for replacement cost and labor, detenon of transcripts, or other !penales. iPad Collecon and Inspecon For the purpose of assuring compliance with technology protocols, LHN reserves the right to collect and examine any issued iPad at any me. LHN also reserves the right to remotely inspect computers and iPads at !school to ensure compliance with established protocols and polices. Soware Updates Students have the ability iniate and run iOS soware updates and individual app updates at their convenience. Students will be given noficaon from LHN when updates may be iniated and installed on the iPad. Students should not install major updates for iOS without prior approval from LHN (for example, updang from 7.1 to 7.2 is acceptable, but you must wait for permission before upgrading from 7.x to 8). !LHN will nofy you with instrucons when iOS updates are available. ! 3

! Installaon of Addional Soware Teachers will let students know which apps and books are needed for their classes. Students will use their LHN Apple ID to download apps. Free apps may be downloaded directly from the App Store or from Self- Service. Paid apps will be purchased by LHN and will be available to download at no charge to the student through Self-Service. Students may download addional apps that are relevant to their studies, but !inappropriate and/or distracng apps may be removed or blocked by the technology staff. During the course of regular repairs, soware upgrades and installaon, and condion audits, the school tech team will remove any detected unauthorized or illegal soware installed on the iPad. This may result in !the loss of files, data, personal sengs, and any other data not backed up by the student beforehand. Repair to iPad Students are expected to have an operaonal iPad at all mes. If the iPad is not funconing properly, they need to have their device inspected by the LHN technology department. If repairs are necessary on the device, the LHN technology department will facilitate the process. While iPads are undergoing service, a !loaner will be provided. Lost or Stolen iPad If a student should lose or have their iPad stolen, they are expected to report the loss/the as soon as possible to the technology department. While a replacement iPad is being purchased, a loaner will be !provided, but the loaner pool is not unlimited. Computer Accounts The in the classrooms and computer labs will be accessible to students through a standard user account. The school will manage soware updates. If new soware is required to be installed, this will also be managed by the school. If new soware is required, the technology department may use Self Service or push remotely. At any me a specific driver is required that is not available via Self Service, students can !submit a cket to the Help Desk by emailing [email protected].

! ! LHN Email Protocols

Email has become a vital communicaon tool used by staff and students to carry out academic and !administrave funcons. It is important to ensure the security and responsible use of email at LHN. !All holders of LHN email accounts are expected to abide by the guidelines set out in this agreement. • As a rule, one should never say something through email that he or she would not say in person. Email should be reserved for the exchange of informaon and not for emoonal correspondence. • No inappropriate e-mail is allowed including derogatory, obscene, or harassing . E-mail messages of an abusive or harassing nature will be subject to a disciplinary response according to the harassment policy in the student handbook. • Representaon: When you send a leer from your school email address you are represenng the school. Sending an email to an outside party is in some circumstances similar to sending a paper message with the school leerhead. It is strongly recommend using a non-LHN email account for personal email. • Students shall not send out any mass emails unless they relate directly to LHN and then only with permission from their Principal. • School email accounts should not be used to send out bulk email. This includes chain leers, adversements, or used to promote the interests of external organizaons. • Chain leers of any kind and spam are prohibited. ! ! Warranty and Insurance

The iPads are covered by two levels of protecon. The first is an extended (3-year) AppleCare Warranty that provides on-site and worldwide support for the laptop. The second level of security is the mandatory !insurance that covers damage, the, and loss not included in the warranty. Please note that although the warranty and insurance provide protecon in case of loss, they cannot protect against lost data and me when repairs are necessary or computers need to be replaced. They therefore should not be taken as a license to be irresponsible with the iPad. Repairs and replacement also cause an impact on others by increasing the cost of insurance in the long run as well as reducing the number of !loaners available. iPad Warranty Each student iPad is covered by a standard 3-year AppleCare warranty. The AppleCare Protecon Plan provides repair coverage – both parts and labor – from Apple-authorized technicians around the world. !Hardware coverage includes your iPad, USB cable, and power brick. All repairs will be conducted through the LHN technology department. Do not take your iPad to Apple or !another service provider. Insurance The school will facilitate insuring the iPads for accidental damage each year. Accidental damage is damage that the supplier determines is not covered under the warranty agreement (i.e., cracked screens, liquid spills, !broken hinges). The cost of insurance is included in tuion, but there is a $100 deducble each me the iPad is damaged outside of AppleCare. This $100 deducble (per incident) will be automacally added to the student bill, as this cost is also the responsibility of each student/family. A lost or stolen iPad has a deducble of $500. If an iPad is stolen, the family must obtain a police report and a copy of that report must be filed with the technology department. Intenonal damage to the iPad is not covered under our insurance plan and the !student’s tuion account will be billed for the full replacement value of the device. !

! Backup ! Your iPad is going to be ulized for a great deal of your schoolwork. It will contain important files and data that will be necessary for your academic success. Keeping these files safe and accessible is your responsibility as is the funconality of the iPad itself. “My iPad crashed” cannot be an excuse for the postponement of schoolwork because one of the advantages of digital learning is that backups are easy and cost effecve. When you backup your files, you are storing your files separately from your computer, !ensuring their longevity. There are a number of ways that files can be backed up on iPads: iCloud Backup iCloud will backup 5 GB of informaon from your iPad for free, and will offer you the ability to purchase more space or exclude certain files from the backup if you run out. It will back up automacally when the iPad is both charging and connected to Wifi. iCloud can be turned on in your iPad sengs under Sengs - iCloud - Storage and Backup. Because of the “find my iPad” feature, you MUST use your LHN email address if you backup to iCloud.

Dropbox Dropbox is soware that allows you to save up to 2 GB of data located on your iPad in the Dropbox folder, and syncs the data to the cloud. This method requires an Internet connecon, and is also accessible from any !computer or smart phone device connected to the Internet. (Data Fees may apply) Seng up Dropbox is very easy. Download the free App from the App Store on your iPad and create an account. Aer you sign into the App, you will be able to link your Dropbox to some of the Apps on your iPad, such as Notability. See the LHN website for specific instrucons

Home Computer You may sync and backup your iPad to your home computer via iTunes. It is recommended that you transfer your photos and videos to your home computer once every few months as a backup, and so you can delete !this media if you start to run out of space on your device. Instrucons can be found on the LHN website. A backup is essenal for the constant accessibility of your academic work and should be done at least once a !month. ! ! 7

! ! Suggested Apps ! An updated list of suggested Apps and their descripons can be found on the LHN website. Apps required by your teachers as well as recommended apps can be found in your Self-Service app. If you need a paid app for !school that is not in your Self-Service app, please nofy the LHN technology department. You will find that there are several apps that you will not be able to do without. Those apps are: • (for communicaon and turning in assignments) • Notability (for notes and compleng worksheets) • iBooks (for textbooks and required reading) • A cloud-based backup app such as Dropbox or Google Drive • Aan app to create presentaons (Keynote, Haiku Deck, Prezi) • Aa word processor (, CloudOn, Word) ! • The Bible app (for Theology and Bible Study) There are other apps that your teachers may require for a project or that you may find extremely useful. Some examples are: • An interacve whiteboard App (ShowMe, Educreaons, Screen Chomp) • A flashcard app (Quizlet) • Reference / Translaon apps (WordReference, Diconary, Spanish Diconary, WolframAlpha) • apps (your band or choir director will suggest apps specifically for you) • Movie eding app for eding video projects (iMovie, Splice) • Voice recorder (Voice Record Pro, GarageBand) ! • Planning/Scheduling app to keep track of assignments ! !

! ! iPad and Computer Security

Keeping your iPad as well as the LHN computers safe and secure is important not only for your educaon but also for LHN as a whole. Ensuring the operaonal efficiency of your device requires you to safeguard it from any potenal cyber threats. An unsecured device on the LHN network is a danger to the enre network; not to menon that the individual unit is prone to malfuncon. The funconality of your device is your !responsibility and as such you must take precauons against any possible cyber aacks and intrusion. You are also responsible for protecng the iPad from physical threats. Never leave your iPad unaended or !take your device into environments that may prove harmful. Passwords You should select secure passwords for your lhnstudents.org email address, computer login, Apple ID, and !RenWeb account. It is OK if all of the passwords are the same, as long as it is a strong password. A strong password is generally 8-10 characters long and includes at least one capital leer and number among lowercase leers. A strong password is important because any individual password that may be !compromised can endanger the enre LHN network. Addionally, it is generally a good cyber-safety pracce to change your password once every 6 months or so, as older passwords – those that have been used more oen – are generally easier to discover than those !that have been newly changed. How to change your Computer login password Access the “Accounts” window from the “System Preferences” applicaon found in the Apple menu (top le). Select your account name. Click on the “Change Password” buon. You need only enter the old !password once, and the new password twice. !If you need your password reset because you do not remember it, please visit the help desk. How to change your Apple ID password In , visit appleid.apple.com, click “Manage my Apple ID,” click on “password and security” aer you log !in, and follow the instrucons. !If you’ve forgoen your Apple ID password, visit appleid.apple.com and use the “forgot my password” link.

9

! ! How to change your Renweb.com password Visit renweb.com in any computer or iPad browser. Select “logins” at the top right and then “ParentsWeb login.” From here, you can use the “forgot user name” link and follow the instrucons to reset your !password. How to change your Edmodo.com password If you are logged in and need to change your password from the iPad, Tap your name on the top toolbar to open your Profile. Tap the “Profile Sengs” icon at the top right of the screen and choose “Change !Password.” Type your current password and then your new desired password twice and tap “Save.” If you cannot remember your password, visit Edmodo.com and use the “forgot your password” link. (You do not need to have a teacher reset your password as it suggests because you have associated your account !with your LHN email address) How to change your email password !Please visit the helpdesk to reset your LHN email password if you have forgoen it. Care of Your iPad

To keep your iPad in the best working condion, you need to ensure that it is physically undisturbed. Even small dents in the casing can render certain essenal components of your device unusable (i.e., the dock connector, headphone jack). So you should make sure that your iPad is stored in a proper place (i.e., in a locked locker, or with you), is transported in a proper case, and kept away from technologically harmful materials (i.e., magnets, liquids, etc.). In the “Care and Feeding” Secon, there are many useful ps on how !to best take care of your device. Appropriate Storage (Bag) Keeping your iPad in a protecve case will protect it against most minor bumps and jolts; however, it is important to ensure that even with the case, there is no adverse pressure applied to it. Some components of your iPad will not funcon well aer having been bumped around a great deal, and screens will break if !enough pressure is applied to them. You should also try to ensure that there are a minimal number of other objects in your bag alongside your iPad. Small, loose objects (such as paper or coins) could accidentally get stuck in openings in your !device, if carried alongside it inside the backpack. Freshmen must use the case provided for their iPad unless other arrangements have been made with the school or the tech department and noted in your account. Upper classmen must purchase an iPad case that !will offer adequate protecon from damage. 10

! ! ! !Your iPad will serve you well as a learning device for three years if you treat it well. You are expected to have your iPad in full-funconing order for every class every day you come into school. Constant use obviously takes a large toll on the device, and in three years, a great deal can happen to your computer internally – aside from any extraneous physical damage or other non-academically related problems. For this reason, it is vital that you take the utmost care in keeping your iPad funconing. There are !several ways to maximize the usefulness of your iPad. First and foremost is shung your iPad down or restarng at regular intervals. You can also quit out of apps by double tapping the home buon and swiping the acve apps upward. If you are having any issues with your iPad, these are also the first 2 troubleshoong techniques to try before coming for help - quit running !apps and/or restart the iPad. Monitor your use of space on the iPad by going to sengs - general - usage. Regularly remove large files that you do not need by syncing with your home computer or syncing to a cloud service like dropbox. Instrucons !are on the LHN website. Delete files, apps and books that you do not need and do not want to keep. Keep your iPad backed up to iCloud as well as to other services, such as dropbox. iCloud is a wonderful, easy way to back up, but somemes it is necessary (under extreme condions) to erase an iPad that is having soware issues and not restore the iCloud backup (to avoid pung the same soware issue back onto the iPad). Because of this possibility, it’s important to have your files backed up in more than one way. Visit the !LHN website for instrucons. Keep your iPad away from water or other liquids. Don’t eat or drink while using the iPad. Don’t insert inappropriate objects into any openings in your iPad – common sense is the biggest guide here, as metallic or magnec objects can easily damage components. Aempt to keep your iPad away from excessive heat or cold or even high levels of humidity, as too much dampness can damage your computer (do not leave it in !your car or outside). Keep your laptop in the case at all mes and be careful to not drop it. You may use a damp, so cloth to clean the iPad’s exterior; however, ensure that you do not apply any liquid directly to the exterior or the screen itself to avoid liquid seeping into the openings in the enclosure. You may use either glass cleaners that contain no alcohol or ammonia, or specially designed cleaning sprays for !computer screens that may be found at most office supply stores. Finally: Be paent. The iPad may take a few seconds to “think”, and in that me, pounding on it or repeatedly entering the same operaon is only going to slow the process. Be paent with your device. It is a tool that !can offer you great access to a variety of informaon, but it will only cooperate if you treat it well. ! 11

! ! Battery/Power

You should come to school with a fully charged baery. Let it discharge while at school, and then before going to bed that night, plug in your iPad so that it charges fully through the night and is ready for the !day. The power adapter takes about 3-4 hours to charge your baery from 0% to 100%. The USB cord is vulnerable to wear and tear. When packing up your charger, make sure that the wires are somewhat slack and not too ght because eventually too much pressure could render the adapter unusable. When !unplugging the USB from the iPad or the charging brick, avoid pulling directly on the cord. !Some ways you can maximize your baery life while at school are: Adjust your sleep sengs: If you are not looking at your iPad, you can save baery life by pung the screen to sleep or “locking” the screen. You can do this manually by pressing the power buon once. For the mes that you forget, you can set your iPad to lock aer a period of inacvity. To make this adjustment, go to !sengs - general - auto lock and choose the amount of me you’d like this to occur. Adjust your brightness level: It takes more baery power to display the screen at full brightness. Adjust the brightness of your screen to the lowest seng that you can comfortably use. This seng can be found in !sengs - wallpaper and brightness. Turn off push: The push seng checks your email, and calendars constantly for new informaon. Most people find that seng this at 15 minutes instead of constant is adequate and requires less baery power. To adjust this feature, visit sengs - mail, contacts and calendars, and touch “fetch new data.” Turn !push off and then select the amount of me you’d like it to fetch new informaon. Adjust your noficaons: If an app is constantly alerng you of new data, that can reduce your baery life. Adjust which apps send you noficaons and how you see those noficaons in sengs - noficaon center. !For each individual app, select the fewest amount of noficaons that you can live with. Adjust other sengs: There are many other sengs that you can adjust that may improve the life of your baery during the school day. For a complete list of ps, visit lutheranhighnorth.org/technology and click on !iPad Help. ! !

The filtering/blocking device will be used to protect against access to visual depicons that are obscene, harmful to minors and child pornography, as required by law. Because the LHN technology is a shared resource, the filtering/blocking device will apply to all devices with Internet access. Filtering/Blocking devices are not foolproof, and LHN cannot guarantee that users will never be able to access offensive materials using LHN’s equipment. Evasion or disabling, or aempng to evade or disable, a filtering/blocking device installed by the LHN is prohibited.

The Director of Technology or the Network administrator may disable the LHN’s filtering/blocking device to enable an adult user access for bona fide research or for other lawful purposes. In making decisions to disable the filtering/blocking device, the administrator shall consider whether the use will serve a legimate !educaonal purpose or otherwise benefit the LHN. OpenDNS Umbrella Lutheran High North ulizes OpenDNS Umbrella to provide security, and web filtering to all student devices while on campus and at home.
