Rapid Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) for: Euzophera bigella June 2018 Summary and conclusions of the rapid PRA Euzophera bigella is a moth found in much of Europe and parts of Asia, whose larvae (caterpillars) feed inside a variety of fruit and under the bark of a number of species of tree. Though there have been several adults caught in light traps in the UK, such records are very scarce and there is no evidence this species is established in any part of this country. Following the rapid screening of E. bigella via the UK Plant Health Risk Register, this PRA was requested to further assess the potential risk to the UK. This rapid PRA shows: Risk of entry The pathway of fruit (and nuts) is considered moderately likely, with medium confidence. Larvae have previously been found in imported fruit in the UK. If larvae were able to complete development inside the fruit, emerging adults would be capable of flying off and locating new hosts. The pathway of larvae under the bark of older trees for planting is considered moderately likely, with medium confidence. Larvae under the bark of younger, smaller trees is assessed as unlikely with medium confidence, as infestations produce swellings and cracks in the bark which are more likely to be seen in smaller trees. The pathway of wood with bark is considered unlikely with low confidence. Confidence is low because a different species of Euzophera has recently travelled from the USA to Italy on this pathway. 1 The pathway of natural spread is considered very unlikely with low confidence. -

A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. National Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. 20560 In his revision of the Anerastiinae (auctorum), Shaffer (1968) showed that this subfamily, which had been separated by Ragonot (1886) from the Phycitinae on the basis of a single reduction character, loss or ex treme reduction of the tongue, was not monophyletic. On the basis of the genitalia, he showed that some genera should remain separate from the Phycitinae and be treated under the subfamily name Peoriinae, a name previously used in a much broader sense by Hulst (1890). The remainder of the Anerastiinae, including the genus Anerastia Hubner, were considered by Shaffer to belong to the Phycitinae. For lack of sufficient information or material Shaffer left unplaced a few genera and species which he discussed briefly at the end of his revision. These are taxa that had not been treated by Heinrich (1956) because he thought that they were Anerastiinae and thus not within the scope of his revision of the Phycitinae. The present paper offers a redescription of three of these unplaced species, namely Altoona ardi fer ella Hulst, Aurora nigromaculella Hulst, and Parramatta placidella Barnes & McDunnough, as well as descriptions of seven new species. We were able to assign the three existing species names with confidence because the types are available, and their genitalia are distinctive. -

Vol. 31, No. 1: 46-50, January 2015 http://dx.doi.org/10.5635/ASED.2015.31.1.046 Short communication Two Species of Phycitinae (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) New to Korea Mujie Qi, Yang-Seop Bae* Bio-Resource and Environmental Center, College of Life Sciences and Bioengineering, Incheon National University, Incheon 406-772, Korea ABSTRACT Two species of Phycitinae, Rabiria rufimaculella (Yamanaka, 1993) and Copamyntis martimella Kirpichnikova & Yamanaka, 2002, are reported for the first time from Korea. Rabiria rufimaculella can be recognized by having two reddish-yellow and short bands near the postmedial and antemedial line, and by the bifurcate gnathos and the cornutus which is formed by numerous thorn-shaped sclerites in male genitalia. Copamyntis martimella can be distinguished with the congeners by the uniformly distributed setae on the sacculus and the curved aedeagus in male genitalia and the peanut-shaped signum near the middle of the corpus bursae in female genitalia. The adults and genitalia of the species are redescribed and illustrated. The morphology of this insect, the damage it caused under the field conditions in the forests of the Lake’s District, and its biology were explored while its natural enemies that were effective on the population were determined. They were found mainly on the lower parts of the tree trunks and led to the intensive release of resin. It was observed to have one generation in a year. The larval development of the insects took about eleven months and thus they overwintered as larvae. Starting from the mid-May, the pupae develop inside the resin released and the pupal development took three weeks, the adults flew throughout June depending on the elevation and the climatic conditions. The young larvae emerged from the eggs in late June. The larvae were observed to start feeding first on the barks of the trunk. Throughout this study. Forficula auricularia (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) and Raphidia ophiopsis (Raphidioptera: Raphidiidae) fed with the larvae of D. sylvestrella were observed as the predatory species. As larval and pupal parasitoid, Brachymeria tibialis (Hymenoptera: Chalcididae) and Venturia robusta (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) were determined. -
