Sister Helen Prejean to speak at St Columba Parish Monday night, October 20, 2014 at 6:30 pm

Sister Helen Prejean is a Sister of the Congregation of St Joseph and a leading American advocate for the abolition of the death penalty. She has been instrumental in sparking national dialogue on and in working with the families of victims. In 1993 she published the award winning book : An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States. This book has been updated and reissued in 2013. The book inspired an Academy Award winning movie starring , a play by Tim Robbins, an opera, and a compilation of music inspired by the film. She has been nominated for the Nobel Peace prize three times.

The death penalty is one of the great moral issues facing our country, yet most people rarely think about it and very few of us take the time to delve deeply enough into this issue to be able to make an informed decision about it. T

Twenty years later and with capital punishment still practiced in 32 states, Sister Helen divides her time between educating citizens about the death penalty, counseling victim’s families, and serving as a spiritual advisor to individual death row prisoners.
