The unusual Mira variable R Hya is well known for its declining period between ad 1770 and 1950, which is possibly attributed to a recent thermal pulse. Aims. The goal of this study is to probe the circumstellar envelope (CSE) around R Hya and to check for a correlation between the derived density structure and the declining period. Methods. We investigate the CSE around R Hya by performing an in-depth analysis of (1.) the photospheric light scattered by three vibration-rotation transitions in the fundamental band of CO at 4.6 µm; and (2.) the pure rotational CO J = 1−0 through 6−5 emission lines excited in the CSE. The vibrational-rotational lines trace the inner CSE within 3.5, whereas the pure rotational CO lines are sensitive probes of the cooler gas further out in the CSE. -

212 PUBLICATIONS OF THE SOME PIONEER OBSERVERS1 By Frank Schlesinger In choosing a subject upon which to speak to you this eve- ning, I have had to bear in mind that, although this is a meeting of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, not many of my audience are astronomers, and I am therefore debarred from speaking on too technical a matter. Under these circumstances I have thought that a historical subject, and one that has been somewhat neglected by the, formal historians of our science, may be of interest. I propose to outline, very briefly of course, the history of the advances that have been made in the accuracy of astronomical measurements. To do this within an hour, I must confine myself to the measurement of the relative places of objects not very close together, neglecting not only measure- ments other than of angles, but also such as can be carried out, for example, by the filar micrometer and the interferometer; these form a somewhat distinct chapter and would be well worth your consideration in an evening by themselves. It is clear to you, I hope, in how restricted a sense I am using the word observer ; Galileo, Herschel, and Barnard were great observers in another sense and they were great pioneers. But of their kind of observing I am not to speak to you tonight. My pioneers are five in number ; they are Hipparchus in the second century b.c., Tycho in the sixteenth century, Bradley in the eighteenth, Bessel in the first half of the nineteenth century and Rüther fur d in the second half. -

THE 1938 DEMOCRATIC SENATORIAL PRIMARY The 1938 Democratic Senatqrial Primary in South Carolina epitomized the best and the worst of South Carolina politics in the first half of the twentieth century. In this heated contest between the fiv..e-term incumbent, an incumbent governor, and the. ·leading state senator, personalities, and not issues, became the focal points of the campaign. For instance, race was not really an issue because blacks could not vote in the Democratic primary at that time. Althougli all three candidates subscribed to the doctrine of "White Supremacy," Senator Smith invoked the doctrine on numerous occasions as an effective oratorical tool to liven up his audiences. During two.and a half months of continuous stump speeches during the hot summer of 1938, the three . candidates attacked each other so much that even jaded South Carolina newspaper · editors lamented the "mud slinging" campaign. -

Chapter 1 A theoretical and observational overview of brown dwarfs Stars are large spheres of gas composed of 73 % of hydrogen in mass, 25 % of helium, and about 2 % of metals, elements with atomic number larger than two like oxygen, nitrogen, carbon or iron. The core temperature and pressure are high enough to convert hydrogen into helium by the proton-proton cycle of nuclear reaction yielding sufficient energy to prevent the star from gravitational collapse. The increased number of helium atoms yields a decrease of the central pressure and temperature. The inner region is thus compressed under the gravitational pressure which dominates the nuclear pressure. This increase in density generates higher temperatures, making nuclear reactions more efficient. The consequence of this feedback cycle is that a star such as the Sun spend most of its lifetime on the main-sequence. The most important parameter of a star is its mass because it determines its luminosity, ef- fective temperature, radius, and lifetime. The distribution of stars with mass, known as the Initial Mass Function (hereafter IMF), is therefore of prime importance to understand star formation pro- cesses, including the conversion of interstellar matter into stars and back again. A major issue regarding the IMF concerns its universality, i.e. whether the IMF is constant in time, place, and metallicity. When a solar-metallicity star reaches a mass below 0.072 M ¡ (Baraffe et al. 1998), the core temperature and pressure are too low to burn hydrogen stably. Objects below this mass were originally termed “black dwarfs” because the low-luminosity would hamper their detection (Ku- mar 1963). -

As part of a conflict that was essentially a continuation of the American Revolution by way of a dispute over the seas and over the border of Canada, on this day and the following one a British army defeated hastily assembled defenders of Washington DC at Bladensburg, Maryland, just north of the capital. The British would go on to burn Washington, including the White House and most of the 3,076 books and 53 maps, charts, and plans of the Library of Congress, along with paintings of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette by Madame Vigee Lebruin. They would also put the chambers of the House and the Senate in Washington DC to the torch — but beware, it is sheer mythology that the books were used as kindling for the fire in the legislative chambers.1 Waldo Emerson would reminisce in his journal in about April or May of 1856 about a British-invasion-of- Boston scare that had occurred in about this period of his childhood:2 I have but one military recollection in all my life. -

The Newsletter of Westchester Amateur Astronomers December 2019 M8-The Lagoon Nebula by Gary Miller A familiar object at summer star parties, M8 in Sagittarius was first glimpsed by John Flamsteed in 1680 and called “The Lagoon Nebula” by the Irish astronomer Agnes Clerke in The System of the Stars (1890). It is an emission nebula which re-radiates the energy of several hot young stars embedded within it, including 9 Sagittari (dead center). It also surrounds the open cluster NGC 6530, a system of 113 young stars. Although it’s low in the summer sky from Westchester, it’s a wonderful visual object in nearly any telescope.
