Just as you entered humanity through this most gentle and helpless state, now help us to find your presence in the face of all the gentle and helpless persons of the earth. Bless us with eyes that see you and ears that hear you: in the presence of the poor and the outcast, the hungry and the homeless, the condemned and the war-torn, the elderly and the unborn. May 10th – St. Ignatius of Laconi (1701 – 1781): Ignatius is another sainted begging . He was the second of seven children of peasant parents in , Italy. His path to the Franciscans was unusual. During a serious illness, Ignatius vowed to become a Capuchin if he recovered. He regained his health but ignored the promise. When he was 20, a riding accident prompted Ignatius to renew the pledge, which he acted on the second time. Ignatius’s reputation for self-denial and charity led to his appointment as the official beggar for the friars in . He fulfilled that task for 40 years, despite being blind for the last two years. While on his rounds, Ignatius would instruct the children, visit the sick, and urge sinners to repent. The people of Cagliari were inspired by his kindness and his faithfulness to his work. Ignatius was canonized in 1951.

May 12th – Sts. Nereus, Domitilla & Achilleus, Martyrs St. Pancras, Martyr: Nereus and Achilleus were Roman soldiers in the household of Flavia Domitilla. They were instructed and converted by St. Peter. These two soldiers in turn inspired St. Domitilla to consecrate her virginity to God. Thereupon, Aurelianus, the fiancée of Domitilla, reported all three to the Roman authorities as being Christians. They were martyred out of hatred for Christianity. Pancras, a noble Phrygian youth, came to Rome at the age of fourteen, and was martyred in 275 because he refused to offer sacrifices to the pagan gods.

May 13th– Our Lady of Fatima: Between May 13 and October 13, 1917, three Portuguese children–Francisco and Jacinta Marto and their cousin Lucia dos Santos–received apparitions of Our Lady at Cova da Iria near Fatima, a city 110 miles north of Lisbon. Mary asked the children to pray the rosary for world peace, for the end of World War I, for sinners, and for the conversion of Russia. Mary gave the children three secrets. Following the deaths of Francisco and Jacinta in 1919 and 1920 respectively, Lucia revealed the first secret in 1927. It concerned a devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The second secret was a vision of hell. When Lucia grew up, she became a Carmelite nun and died in 2005 at the age of 97. Pope John Paul II directed the Holy See’s Secretary of State to reveal the third secret in 2000; it spoke of a “bishop in white” who was shot by a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows into him. Many people linked this vision to the assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II in St. Peter’s Square on May 13, 1981. The feast of Our Lady of Fatima was approved by the local bishop in 1930; it was added to the Church’s worldwide calendar in 2002.

May 14th – St. Matthias: According to Acts 1:15-26, during the days after the Ascension, Peter stood up amid the brothers—about 120 of Jesus’ followers. Now that Judas had betrayed his ministry, it was necessary, Peter said, to fulfill the scriptural recommendation that another should take his office. “Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he was taken up from us, become with us a witness to his resurrection” (Acts 1:21-22). They nominated two men: Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias. They prayed and drew lots. The choice fell upon Matthias, who was added to the Eleven. Matthias is not mentioned by name anywhere else in the New Testament.

May 15th – St. Isidore (550 – 615): Isidore has become the patron of farmers and rural communities. In particular, he is the patron of Madrid, Spain, and of the United States National Rural Life Conference. When he was barely old enough to wield a hoe, Isidore entered the service of John de Vergas, a wealthy landowner from Madrid, and worked faithfully on his estate outside the city for the rest of his life. He married a young woman as simple and upright as himself who also became a saint—Maria de la Cabeza. They had one son, who died as a child. Isidore had deep religious instincts. He rose early in the morning to go to church and spent many a holiday devoutly visiting the churches of Madrid and surrounding areas. All day long, as he walked behind the plow, he communed with God. His devotion, one might say, became a problem, for his fellow workers sometimes complained that he often showed up late because of lingering in church too long. He was known for his love of the poor, and there are accounts of Isidore’s supplying them miraculously with food. He had a great concern for the proper treatment of animals. He died May 15, 1130, and was declared a saint in 1622, with Saints Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, Teresa of Avila, and Philip Neri. Together, the group is known in Spain as “the five saints.”

THE COURAGE TO SPEAK AND TO ACT AGAINST ABORTION The mother’s womb should be the very safest place for a child. Tragically, it has become the most dangerous location- more dangerous than any battlefield or terrorist target. In some cities, about 40 percent of pregnancies end in abortion. To defend these innocent children and to speak and act on their behalf takes courage. Perhaps family and friends may not like our pro-life stance. Perhaps we may lose business. We all know people who have had an abortion so perhaps we do not want to offend a relative or loved one. It is all too easy to make excuses or make calculations in our minds and hearts, which often results in paralyzed inaction and apathy. We are always told of reasons why we cannot speak up against abortion. If the priest speaks in Church, he will be rebuked by some who will try to argue it’s too political; if we speak in the political arena, we are told it’s too religious. If we speak in the media, we are told it’s too disturbing; in our schools and colleges, it’s too disruptive. On the public streets, it’s too distressing for children; in the business world it’s too ‘controversial, in the family it’s too divisive, and in social settings, it’s too impolite or politically incorrect. So, if abortion is plainly wrong and inhumane (which it most definitely is), how do we do what is right and where do we go to say so? The unambiguous answer is that we must stop looking for a risk-free place to fight abortion and have the courage to speak up in all these arenas! Let us stop counting the cost to ourselves if we speak up and start counting the cost to the innocent children if we remain silent.– Source: Pro-Life Articles
