"Motocross of Nations" Invades Budd's Creek Posted by jbr1313 On 09/26/2007 The USA took on the world last weekend in Budd's Creek, MD. Promoter Jonathan Beasley brought the biggest Motocross event in the world to town. Motocross of Nations is the Olympics of motocross, with the best three riders from the 33 different countries that showed competing in a three-moto event. This was the last chance to see Ricky Carmichael race motocross, with his departure from two wheels to four as he tries his luck in the Nascar ranks. First for the U.S. were the “Greatest Of All Time”, Ricky Carmichael (MX1 class) and the U.S. Motocross Lites Champion, Ryan Villopoto (the MX2 class) who took the track at the same time battling the world's best in both classes. After the gate dropped, Ryan Villopoto showed the crowd just what he could do. Villopoto would pull the hole shot and could only see second place by looking a long way behind him. Australia’s Chad Reed moved from a 5th place start to 2nd place finish, sixteen seconds behind Villopoto. Ricky Carmichael “The GOAT” found himself behind a first turn pile-up and in 39th place. Carmichael showed why he is so great by moving through the pack over the next 30 minutes to finish in 3rd place just behind Reed. In the second Moto of the day, Ryan Villopoto and Tim Ferry (who replaced an injured James Stewart) took on the MX2 and MX3 classes. It was much the same type start for Team USA in Moto 2, with Ryan Villopoto in front coming out of turn one, and his teammate, Ferry, back in 32nd place. Tim “Red Dawg” Ferry got the chance to prove that he was the best choice to take injured Stewart’s place on Team USA. Ferry clawed his way from 32nd to finish 4th over the sixteen-lap race. With Villopoto’s two firsts, a 2nd for Carmichael and a 4th for Ferry, the USA looked pretty good going into the last moto of the day. The final race of the day gave both Carmichael and Ferry a chance at a better start; and a better start they both got. Carmichael's #1 bike came out of the first turn like he was shot out of a gun. No one even got close to him. Ferry moved from 4th to 2nd in a just a few laps. Their finish easily secured the victory for Team USA. Ricky Carmichael, Team USA Team Overall 1. Team USA 8pts 2.
