A game you might have forgotten Leeds United 1 Aston Villa 2 n August 16, 1980 The usual season-opening optimism was somewhat missing from Elland Road in August 1980. Despite the signing of Argentinean Alex Sabella for £400,000 from Sheffield United, Leeds fans were still smarting from a mediocre 11th-place finish the previous season, plus early and humiliating exits from both domestic cups and the UEFA Cup. It is safe to say that the words “Adamson out!” were not far from the vocal majority’s lips and they would be heard again before this afternoon was out. The first club outside Ulster was Dublin Association Football Club which was formed in 1883. At the time, the Irish Football Association (IFA) was the governing body. Based in Belfast, it found it difficult to promote football throughout the country. This led to the formation of the Leinster Football Association in 1892 as the game became more popular in the area. However, there was always a feeling among clubs from outside the Belfast area that the IFA favoured Ulster based clubs-especially when selecting sides for international matches. Despite this, it was not until after the 1916 Rising and the rise of Nationalism that southern affiliates, such as the Leinster FA, took an aggressive approach in their dealings with the IFA. The clubs often threatened to break away, and in early 1921, Bohemians, St. James's Gate and Shelbourne all withdrew from the Irish League, though all three sides decided to remain involved in Cup competitions.

A game you might have forgotten March 13, 1988 n Leeds United 5 Sheffield United 0 The 1987/88 season had been an insufferable anti-climax following the enormity of the previous seasons’ two-pronged attempt at re-establishing the name of Leeds United. This 5-0 win offered an isolated moment of conviction as Leeds gathered momentum for an assault on the Play-Off places that would ultimately end in a familiar void of nothingness. It was also a red-letter day for Sheffield-born Wednesday fan John Pearson, an unlikely hero with a 27-minute second-half hat trick. The Leeds squad was about to undergo yet another major turnover, as Billy Bremner’s unsuccessful tenure drew to a close, and only a handful of the players on display would feature John Pearson regularly a few months later.
