More importantly, his memory and principles live on, fostered through the extraordinary and noble efforts of the Leon H. Sullivan Foundation, headed by his distinguished and capable daughter, Hope Sullivan. In his book Build Brother Build, Rev. Sullivan recorded his thoughts on his African heritage in both nostalgic and poetic language: When I plan for the future, my thoughts turn eventually to Africa. Somehow, I believe, slavery will be turned to the advantage of our future. The day will come when the continent from which my forefathers came will blossom into a paradise. I have a feeling that my ultimate freedom and my ultimate security are tied to the development of Africa. Of course I have no intention of forsaking America, for America is my home and I have helped to build her and shape her. But like the Jews and others who came to make this country what it is, I need an anchor in the past, a place my children can proudly call their ancestral home. My citizenship is here, but a part of my spirit is in Africa, also. I envision a bridge from America to Africa over which one day my children and my black brothers and black sisters will move freely from one side to the other and back again. The bible has said, “The day will come when Ethiopia shall stretch forth her hands again,” and I know that day is coming, though I shall not live to see it. The time is not far off when black technicians, artisans and craftsmen by the thousands and tens of thousands will visit a flourishing Africa, helping to mold that continent into a new greatness glorious to see. 2 When Leon Sullivan joined the Board of Directors at General Motors in 1971, he used his corporate foothold to oppose apartheid, the government policy of segregation in South Africa. Since the passage of a Declaration of Grand Apartheid in 1948, a number of reformers, including Nelson Mandela, had tried unsuccessfully to end apartheid. He personified stubborn persistence in the struggle and stood tall and undaunted in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity. The Early Years: Leon H. Sullivan Leon H. Sullivan was the son of Charles and Helen Sullivan. He was born in Charleston, West Virginia and was raised in Washington Court, one of Charleston’s poorest sections. At the age of three, his parents divorced and he grew up an only child. In spite of growing up in extreme poverty, Sullivan recalled that “we never went hungry.” Although an only child, he grew up in an extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins. 3 Rev. Sullivan credits his grandmother Carrie for his convictions and in so doing recalls that she “regularly reinforced the view that no one – not even God – would help me if I was not willing to help myself.” 4 Growing up as a poor black child in the segregated South came with many challenges; however, the obstacles segregation presented to Sullivan in his early years only served to strengthen his resolve to fight against discrimination. At the age of twelve, Sullivan had his first direct experience with bigotry. He tried to purchase a Coca-Cola in a drugstore in Capitol Street and was promptly ordered by the white proprietor to leave. The proprietor yelled, “Stand on your feet, black boy! You can’t sit down here!” Sullivan recounts this story in his various writings and describes how it was a motivating factor in his life long struggle to exterminate racial prejudice. 3 Stand on Your Feet Black Boy , http://muweb.marshall.edu/revleonsullivan/principled/stand.htm 4 Leon H. All Rights Reserved. By the age of seventeen, Sullivan had chosen the path towards becoming a minister. He credits Rev. Moses Newsome for his career choice. Sullivan explained that, at a time when he was most impressionable, he witnessed Rev. Newsome reach out to the poorest and the lowest he could find. He further notes, “I admired him and determined this was the kind of man I wanted to be.” Admirably, Sullivan became a preacher by age seventeen and the pastor of two churches by age eighteen. 5 Sullivan attended the Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University, where he obtained a master’s degree in Religion in 1947. He met his wife, Grace Banks, who he called his “Amazing Grace,” while serving as an assistant Pastor at Abyssinian Baptist Church. He and Grace together brought three children into the world: Hope, Julie and Howard. Rev. Sullivan later became the pastor at First Baptist Church in South Orange, New Jersey and the pastor of Zion Baptist Church in Philadelphia. While at Zion Baptist Church, his congregation grew from 600 to 6,000 members, making it one of the largest congregations in America during this era. The Selective Patronage & Civil Rights Movements Rev. Sullivan’s fight against the scourge of racism and his quest for social equality never took a back seat to his career as a pastor. If anything, the two were one and the same. His work at Zion Baptist Church provided him with the opportunity to foster his life’s mission in an urban setting riddled with social complexities and problems. Moreover, naiveté was never an attribute that hindered Sullivan’s vision. All Rights Reserved. an early age that self-help was the major factor in bridging a socio-economic gap plagued by over a century of racial prejudice, segregation and discrimination. Rev. Sullivan later explained: Creating economic opportunities for blacks and other minority groups who had experienced discrimination stood at the top of my list of priorities. In the larger society, many mistakenly assumed that once the laws were changed to end segregation, all the problems of minority cultures would be solved. But black people learned from experience that social and economic discrimination would continue long after human rights laws were enacted as a result of the efforts of the civil rights movements. 6 By 1960, Rev. Sullivan recognized that blacks made up less than one percent of the U.S. marginal job market. He also witnessed that the jobs in which most blacks were employed were severely limited to specific sectors of the economy, mostly labor and low paying government service sector. More concerning was the fact that blacks were virtually shut out of the job market of major industries like banks, insurance companies, corporations and retail stores. Sullivan also understood that despite this discrimination, blacks as a group made up a formidable sector of economic purchasing power. He was a brilliant student of business and had ingenious insight into the inner workings of corporate America. His participation in groups like Americans for the Competitive Enterprise System and Chambers of Commerce provided him with the discernment he needed to leverage an economic force once thought insignificant to the powers that be. Sullivan knew that blacks, comprising approximately twelve percent of the population, were an indispensable market force and as such, could make or break a corporation.

CLINE: Revolution and Reconciliation: The Student Interracial Ministry, Liberal Protestantism, and the Civil Rights Movement, 1960-1970 (Under the direction of Jacquelyn Dowd Hall) The Student Interracial Ministry (SIM) was a seminary-based, nationally influential Protestant civil rights organization based in the Social Gospel and Student Christian Movement traditions. This dissertation uses SIM’s history to explore the role of liberal Protestants in the popular revolutions of the 1960s. Entirely student-led and always ecumenical in scope, SIM began in 1960 with the tactic of placing black assistant pastors in white churches and whites in black churches with the goal of achieving racial reconciliation. In its later years, before it disbanded in mid-1968, SIM moved away from church structures, engaging directly in political and economic movements, inner-city ministry and development projects, and college and seminary teaching. In each of these areas, SIM participants attempted to live out German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer's exhortation to “bring the church into the world.” Revolution and Reconciliation demonstrates that the civil rights movement, in both its “classic” phase from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s and its longer phase stretching over most of the twentieth century, was imbued with religious faith and its expression.

    Black Power in the Boardroom: Corporate America, the Sullivan Principles, and the Anti-Apartheid Struggle JESSICA ANN LEVY This article traces the history of General Motors’ first black director, Leon Sullivan, and his involvement with the Sullivan Principles, a corporate code of conduct for U.S. companies doing business in Apartheid South Africa. Building on and furthering the postwar civil rights and anti-colonial struggles, the international anti-apartheid movement brought together students, union workers, and religious leaders in an effort to draw attention to the horrors of Apartheid in South Africa. Whereas many left-leaning activists advocated sanctions and divestment, others, Sullivan among them, helped lead the way in drafting an alternative strategy for American business, one focused on corporate-sponsored black empowerment. Moving beyond both narrow criticisms of Sullivan as a “sellout” and corporate propaganda touting the benefits of the Sullivan Prin- ciples, this work draws on corporate and “movement” records to reveal the complex negotiations between white and black executives as they worked to situate themselves in relation to anti-racist movements in the Unites States and South Africa. In doing so, it furthermore reveals the links between modern corporate social responsibility and the fight for Black Power within the corporation. © The Author 2019. INTRODUCTION The high rate of crime in Russia and the prominence of the Russian Mafia are well known and publicized in the West. President Yeltsin has called crime, which is choking the emerging market economy, Russia's biggest problem.' An article in U.S. News & World Report describes Russia as "a vast bazaar in which the easiest way to get rich is to steal."2 The government has shown itself ineffective in combating crime and in establishing a rule of law. Consequently, many ordinary Russians, who are experiencing a decline in their standard of living,3 are more ambivalent about the march towards capitalism than they were in 1991. Many Western businesses are understandably reluctant to enter an area in which corruption is rampant and the future uncertain. However, the reasons behind the present conditions are too often inadequately understood. As a result, the remedy and the appropriate role of Western companies in the developing market of countries of the former Soviet Union are not clearly * Richard T.     Sullivan Principles By Molly Roth The Global Sullivan Principles, launched in 1977 by Philadelphia civil rights leader Leon H. Sullivan (1922-2001), represent one of the twentieth century’s most powerful attempts to effect social justice through economic leverage. More a sustained movement than a static document, the principles sought to bring the power of American investment in South Africa to bear on the cruel injustice of the apartheid state by establishing baseline commitments to fairness and empowerment as conditions for operating in the country. Sullivan, a native of West Virginia coal-mining country, came to Philadelphia in 1950 to pastor Zion Baptist Church on North Broad Street by way of a stop in Harlem, where he served as assistant minister to Adam Clayton Powell Jr. (1908-72) at the Abyssinian Baptist Church. Sullivan believed that Christian ministry needed to be geared to action and described himself as preaching a “pragmatic gospel.” Sullivan had honed his economic activism through what he called the “selective patronage” campaign, begun in 1958. Dissatisfied with the economic opportunities open to minorities and women, he helped to organize a coalition of 400 black ministers across Philadelphia to address discrimination in employment. If companies declined appeals from the coalition to hire blacks into professional and managerial positions, the ministers would urge their congregants to withhold their patronage. “Don’t buy where you can’t work,” they advised. This flexing of consumer muscle by Philadelphia’s black population yielded impressive results in terms of access to employment and confirmed the tactical power of coordinated economic resistance. Through the lens of the free-trade-optimist, it is black and white: corporations bring jobs, and jobs equal a happy and healthy economy. A major oversight in this neoliberal Utopian ideology is that corporations are not in the business of building communities, nor do they have an interest in keeping their operations stationary enough to allow economic growth to occur over a span of years.

    SPEAKER AND HONOREE BIOS H. SAMY ALIM H. Samy Alim is the David O. Sears Endowed Chair in the Social Sciences and Professor of Anthropology and African American Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Founding Director of the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Language (CREAL). Alim began his scholarly trajectory as a Penn undergraduate working closely with Dr. Harkavy and others at the Netter Center. He continues to work in schools and communities in the U.S. and South Africa to develop “culturally sustaining pedagogies,” which is the subject of his most recent book, Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies: Teaching and Learning for Justice in a Changing World (Teachers College Press, 2017, with Django Paris). Other recent books include Raciolinguistics: How Language Shapes Our Ideas about Race (Oxford, 2016, with John Rickford & Arnetha Ball) and Articulate While Black: Barack Obama, Language, and Race in the U.S. (Oxford, 2012, with Geneva Smitherman), which examines former President Barack Obama’s language use—and America's response to it. He has written extensively about Black Language and Hip Hop Culture in his books, Street Conscious Rap (1999), You Know My Steez (2004), Roc the Mic Right (2006), Tha Global Cipha (2006), Talkin Black Talk (2007), and Global Linguistic Flows (2009). DAWN ANDERSON-BUTCHER Dawn Anderson-Butcher is a Full Professor in the College of Social Work at The Ohio State University (OSU) and a Licensed Independent Social Worker-Supervisor (LISW-S).
