  • A Street Named Bi Pendo,How to Write About
A Street Named Bi Pendo By Carey Baraka “Memory is short-lived/And more important instead/That streets are well-laid/Flowing and uncongested.” — Jonathan Kariara, Naming Streets in Nairobi The main road that runs through Kisumu is called Jomo Kenyatta Highway. Named after the country’s first president, the road divides the town in a North-South axis that runs from Patel Flats (where it stops being Kakamega Road) to the State Lodge in Milimani. In fact, one might argue that it is the spine of the city, in the sense of it being the central nervous system and the other roads feeding off it. In other words, cut off this road from either end (at Kondele or at the intersection with Busia Road) and you have killed Kisumu. During the 2017 electoral period, Jomo Kenyatta Highway was the epicentre of several violent clashes between opposition supporters and police officers. A general election had been held on 8 August and the main candidates in the presidential election were the incumbent, Uhuru Kenyatta of the Jubilee Party, and Raila Odinga of the NASA coalition. On 9 August, as tallying was ongoing, Odinga announced that the elections database had been hacked and the results were being manipulated in favour of his opponent, and that the hacker had used the credentials of Chris Msando, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ICT manager who had been murdered less than two weeks to the election. Odinga said, “What the IEBC has posted is a complete fraud . to give Uhuru Kenyatta votes that were not cast .

  • Sports Washing and Politics in African Football,Africa United: the Cup of Nations Returns and Kenya Made It to the Party,Confess
Sports Washing and Politics in African Football By Carey Baraka Between 2006 and 2010, the Egyptian national men’s football team proved to be a resolute force at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), winning the continental trophy three times. Fans of this all- conquering Egyptian side remember such names as Essam El-Hadary, Hosni Abd Rabou, Mohamed Zidan, and Amr Zaki. For many, the qualities of marauding midfielder Mohamed Aboutrika, exemplified the spirit of the team. Aboutrika, also known as “El Magico”, “Amir El Qolob” (prince of hearts), or, simply, “Arab’s Zidane”, won the CAF ( Confederation of African Football) Africa Best Player of the Year a record four times and scored the sole goal in the final in AFCON 2008 as The Pharaohs edged out the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra. With his status as a legend of Egyptian football, one would have expected that at the concluded 2019 Total African Cup of Nations hosted by Egypt, Aboutrika would have been the face of the tournament, his image emblazoned across the country’s stadia. However, Aboutrika was absent from the tournament, and from the country entirely. Aboutrika has been in exile in Qatar since 2017 and on the country’s terror watch list because of his links with the Muslim Brotherhood. Aboutrika established a reputation for voicing strong political views. In 2008, in a national team game against Sudan, Aboutrika celebrated a goal by removing his jersey to reveal a T-shirt underneath with a message reading “Sympathize with Gaza”, written in both Arabic and English, in protest of Israel’s ten-day blockade of Gaza.

  • Ligue 1 2013/2014: Your Guide to the Season Ahead
Ligue 1 2013/2014: Your Guide to the Season Ahead Get French Football News A Note from the Editor: The transfer window begins to pick up pace as we head to its business end, the month of August. However, there is something that enthuses and excites me far more: football is back. As I look back on last season, in many ways, I wish we could merely repeat it. Whether it was PSG’s magical Champions League run, Saint Etienne’s monumental Coupe de la Ligue win or sitting there on a bleak November evening watching Reims’s utterly mundane goalless draw with Brest; the 2012/2013 campaign had it all and with some to spare. Undoubtedly, the majority of the footballing media will next season focus frustratingly on AS Monaco’s performances as they look to criticise and accuse them of ‘ruining football’. Frankly, it is an all too familiar stance that has been reiterated these past months, and Monaco have yet to kick a ball. Justly or unjustly so, Monaco will bring competition that will undeniably raise the quality of football in Ligue 1 and give the league a larger following worldwide. However, if there is one thing I want you to take away from the introduction to the Get French Football News Season Preview it is this: try and look past Monaco. Instead, observe what Philippe Montanier may achieve as he looks to revolutionise Rennes and turn them into a consistent European power; take an interest in the exceptional batch of young French talent that currently dominates Lyon’s squad; applaud the way in which Marseille have set about recruiting this summer and take heed of the way Lorient attempt to play and the exceptional example that President Loic Fery is setting in how to run a modern football club.

The case of Mathare Youth Sports Association Kurt Wachter A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Southampton Solent University for the degree of Master of Arts Southampton Solent University Faculty of Business, Sport and Enterprise MA Sport and Development January 2014 Abstract Sport is currently considered a legitimate means to progress global health, education, development and peace (UN 2006). However, upon close examination, Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) still follows the traditional trajectory of international development which predominantly involves the supposedly apolitical transposition of resources from donors (Global North) to implementers (Global South)1 (Briggs 2008). These include the less tangible resources that include Global Northern knowledge, ideologies and practices which are transposed in a unidirectional pattern from the North to the South. Undoubtedly, the transposing of the less tangible resources listed above consequently normalizes the legitimate ways of approaching and doing development (Sidaway 2008). The SDP movement has taken an uncritical posture of the ideological underpinnings of SDP programmes and approaches. This disparity could be seen as an extended notion of a colonial discourse: that truth about development is constructed in the Global North and implemented in Global South. Recent postcolonial studies have called for a critical analysis of the “colonizing tendencies” within the SDP movement because certain dominant Western conceptualisations and discourses would legitimize Northern-driven hegemonic practices (Darnell 2011: 183). In the SDP sector the partnership approach “has become ubiquitous as a modus operandi” (Lindsey 2011: 517).
