Number of inhabitants: 7500

History Tourism in the holiday region of Gstaad is based on a tradition dating back more than 100 years. It all started in 1906 with the foundation of the first tourist boards. The once poor mountain valley has since developed into an internationally renowned tourist attraction. This is evidenced by the fact that various celebrities have already honoured Gstaad with their presence. Following a visit to Gstaad, the actress Julie Andrews sang the praises of the vilLocation: «It’s the last pa- radise in a crazy world.» In 1993, the tourist boards merged to form a unified Saanenland Tourist Board. In 1997, it was transformed into its present form «Gstaad Saanenland Tourism».

Languages Gstaad is situated in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. Accordingly, German is the most com- monly spoken language. Thanks to its immediate vici- nity to the French-speaking part of Switzerland (3 km) and focus on international tourism in the premium segment, French and English are also spoken.

Climate Gstaad lies at an altitude of 1,050 metres above sea level. The pleasant subalpine climate spoils visitors with lots of sunshine. The seasons come and go quickly. The end of the winter season is soon followed by a mild and colourful Alpine spring. From as early as mid- May, the conditions are ideal for pursuing all kinds of outdoor activities: from hiking to cycling, river rafting or a husky ride on the glacier. Winter sports opera- tions on the Glacier3000 start as early as the end of October, while in the valley the strong autumn sunshine lures people outdoors. The other mountain lifts in the area of Gstaad Mountain Rides generally open from mid-December.

Alpine «capital» of major events Visitors to the region can choose from more than 1000 different events listed in the event calendar. Some of these events have a top international format, such as the Menuhin Festival or the Allianz Suisse Open tennis tournament. Top Events

SWATCH FIVB World Tour – 1to1 energy July 4 – July 10, 2011 Against the exotic backdrop of the Alps the world‘s best beach-volleyball teams battle it out on Centre Court in Gstaad. The spectators for their part are enti- rely captivated by this thrilling beach atmosphere, the exciting matches and the hot rhythms.

Menuhin Festival Gstaad July 15 – September 9, 2011 This festival of classical music is regarded as one of the best concert series in Switzerland. When selec- ting the artists the organisers have only one criterion in mind: quality. Every year musicians of world stan- ding do the honours here. The exquisite programme features around 40 concerts from July to September.

Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad July 23 – July 31, 2011 Gstaad and world-class tennis have been an unbea- table doubles pairing for decades. It‘s a message the organisers of the Allianz Suisse Open broadcast to the world whenever the world‘s men‘s tennis elite trans- form Gstaad into the «Wimbledon of the Alps».

Hublot Polo Gold Cup August 18 – August 21, 2011 The international Hublot Polo Gold Cup Gstaad has established itself as a major attraction and social high- light. Every year the sport of kings makes a huge im- pact with its top-ranked players and hard-fought batt- les for the coveted world ranking points.

Country Night Gstaad September 9 – September 11, 2011 Gstaad goes all out in its celebrations of the West. It‘s no wonder the Gstaad Country Night is regarded by those in the know as Europe‘s leading Country Music event. On the strength of that reputation the organisers see each year as an even greater incentive to sign up the scene‘s biggest stars to perform at the event.

Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad January 28 – February 5, 2011 From an artistic point of view the Sommets Musicaux is one of the few first-rate music festivals to be staged in the winter. It comprises classical music enjoyment with soloists and chamber music in local churches and in a separate concert cycle with young up-and-coming artists. In the holiday region of Gstaad, organisers of meetings, incentive trips and conferences can choose from a unique combination of first-class indoor and outdoor activities, unspoilt nature in an Alpine environment and a range of wellness and spa facilities that the Swiss Tourist Board has awarded the quality seal «Wellness Destination».

Since the beginning of 2009, the holiday region of Gstaad has also used the Swiss Convention & Incen- tive Bureau (SCIB), a themed platform of Switzerland Tourism, to market its meeting and incentive offers. Gstaad is one-of-a-kind in this respect: it is the only «Wellness Destination» in this segment. This unique selling point gives organisers of meetings and conferences the chance to impress their custo- mers by offering exceptional programmes and hence generating the conditions necessary for a creative environment, in which ideas can be developed in a relaxing environment and like-minded people can come together for brainstorming sessions.

Where meetings and incentives are concerned, Gstaad cooperates with six specialist hotels. They have conference rooms with modern furnishings and appropriate technical equipment.
