Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Critical Studies in Improvisation / Études critiques en improvisation, Vol 10, No 1 (2014) “We Wanted Our Coffee Black”: Public Enemy, Improvisation, and Noise Niel Scobie Introduction Outside of academic circles, “noise” often has pejorative connotations in the context of music, but what if it was a preferred aesthetic with respect to music making? In addition, what if the preferred noise aesthetic was a direct result of group improvisation? Caleb Kelly claims that “Subjective noise is the most common understanding of what noise is. Put simply, it is the sound of the complaint from a stereotypical mother screaming to her teenage son to ‘turn that noise off. To the parent, the aggravating noise is the sound of the music, while it is his mother’s’ voice that is noise to the teenager enjoying his music” (72-73). In Music and Discourse, Jean-Jacques Nattiez goes further to state that noise is not only subjective, its definition, and that of music itself, is culturally specific: “There is never a singular, culturally dominant conception of music; rather, we see a whole spectrum of conceptions, from those of the entire society to those of a single individual” (43). Nattiez quotes from René Chocholle’s Le Bruit to define “noise” as “any sound that we consider as having a disagreeable affective character”—making “the notion of noise [. .] first and foremost a subjective notion” (45). Noise in this context is, therefore, most often positioned as the result of instrumental or lyrical/vocal sounds that run contrary to an established set of musical

Bring the Noise Theme – KS1/First Level – Lesson Plan 3 1. Warm up Activity 10 mins Pass the Sound This is a great game to get the children to focus, while also training their co-ordination and rhythm skills. Arrange the class so they are sitting in a circle. Objective and Musical Focus The teacher begins the game by making a non-rhythmic Pulse; Rhythm; sound using their body, for example rubbing their hands Playing as an together. Unlike Slayer, Anthrax have always had a huge amount of input into their cover art, especially drummer Charlie Benante. Seizing control of the band’s aesthetic after the widely-ridiculed Fistful Of Metal sleeve, Benante has conceived, overseen and approved every image the band have since stamped their name on, tracing an artistic line from the garish excesses of the 80s, through the moody, minimalist 90s, to the hip superhero likenesses and ‘Pentathrax’ insignia of their post-millennial graphic design. In 2016 Charlie told Artist Direct “That’s one of the reasons I still take the time and effort to make an album cover: I want our audience to get lost in it.” Here are the stories behind every Anthrax sleeve… Fistful Of Metal (1984) “The cover was all wrong, but we didn’t have the budget to do anything else,” admits Scott Ian in his 2014 autobiography I’m The Man . The notorious sleeve was conceived by short-lived frontman Neil Turbin (whose homemade glove is depicted on the fist) and painted by a friend of guitarist Dan Spitz, who clinched the job when he designed the band’s iconic logo. It often ends up in ‘worst cover of all time’ lists, a status the band agreed with, although Scott says he’s grown fonder of it over the years “just because it’s so goofy”, reasoning “all the big thrash debut albums… had terrible covers.” Spreading The Disease (1985) Boasting surely the most famous sneaker soles in heavy metal history, the cover art for Spreading The Disease was produced by designer Peter Corriston and illustrator Dave Heffernan.
