COMMONWEALTH HEALTH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present. Alice Morse Earle

2 COMMONWEALTH HEALTH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2013 We are honored to lead THE CAMPAIGN FOR EXCELLENCE, which launched this year. Through this campaign, we will strengthen current Commonwealth Health Foundation initiatives while responding to new needs in the ever-changing world of healthcare.

One of the tremendous additions to our community is The Medical Center-WKU Health Sciences Complex (HSC). This facility houses a Patient Simulation Lab where sophisticated equipment is available for the training and continuing education of healthcare professionals. Already, staff at The Medical Center have realized the powerful impact of this training while caring for critically ill patients.

An Endowment for Education was established, and there is a strong need to build a reserve as we offer high-caliber healthcare education now and for generations to come. In addition, there are still naming opportunities available to help support the HSC.

The Hospitality House, Commonwealth Health Free Clinic and The Dental Clinic offer ongoing services that are vital to many people during times of great challenge. Because of this, the need to help remains great and is a priority of the Foundation.

We are honored to work together, improving the quality of life throughout our region. We hope you will join us as part of THE CAMPAIGN FOR EXCELLENCE.

Gratefully,

Bob Kirby Jim Martens Co-Chair, The Campaign for Excellence Co-Chair, The Campaign for Excellence

ANNUAL REPORT 2013 5 Dr. Narendra Nathoo and Dr. Clark Bernard are vital leaders of the Neuroscience Services team at The Medical Center. These highly skilled neurosurgeons provide excellent care for those dealing with serious issues of the brain and spine. Often, there are life- changing outcomes.

One powerful story is of a patient who had full restoration of sight after experiencing a progressive loss of vision. The human eyes are one of the most complicated organs of the body. People rely on all five senses, but undoubtedly, vision is the sense that is relied upon the most. Imagine the alarm of losing the ability to see.

The patient who had a restoration of sight had been given an initial diagnosis of glaucoma as the cause of the abnormal vision but chose to seek another opinion. The correct diagnosis was that a pituitary mass was compressing the vision nerves and the patient was referred to Dr. Narendra Nathoo for surgery. Using specialized equipment brought in to The Medical Center, minimally invasive surgery was then performed by Dr. Brad Morris, ENT surgeon, and Dr. Nathoo who removed the pituitary mass. The patient went on to have full restoration of vision. What a joyful outcome!

The patient felt deep gratitude and wanted to express this in a meaningful way. The patient’s family chose to make a significant financial gift that allowed for the purchase of the sophisticated equipment, thus assuring that future patients could have immediate surgery without any wait time. As our medical services grow, there is a need for more community involvement, according to Dr. Nathoo.

Equipment is very costly and in our current economic climate, the generosity of donors is a much needed part of maintaining the highest level of services with the rapid changes in healthcare and technology.”

This inspirational story of a patient’s restoration of sight is an incredible example of gratitude in action that is bringing benefit to many others in our region! ■ ■ A Vision for the Future

ANNUAL REPORT 2013 7 Hope

Cheryl Warner, a special lady in our community, dedicated her life to taking care of others. When Care the company she worked for closed its doors, she found herself without medical . To make ends meet, she took a minimum wage waitressing job but continued to go without insurance because she could not afford the coverage. Cheryl had an active thyroid issue and was unable to pay for medicine to keep the problem under control. This was not a choice that she wanted to make, but one that she had to make financially. Shortly after stopping her medication, her face swelled to the extreme– it looked like she had been stung by bees.

Her daughter called several physicians’ offices but was not able to get in to see them. Cheryl felt desperate and wanted to give up. She had become extremely ill during this time and thought she might even die. She felt hopeless. With nowhere else to turn, Cheryl heard about the Free Clinic through a co-worker at the restaurant.

Cheryl felt relief during her first visit to the Clinic and started immediately receiving the care she needed. ■ ■

Everyone at the Clinic is so compassionate and they truly make you feel at ease. They show you that they really care about you as a person and what you are going through. They give you back hope at a time when you need it.”

8 COMMONWEALTH HEALTH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2013 Care

Dr. Tom Thompson believes in giving back to our community! He was born and raised on a farm near Owensboro in a large family. His family was not wealthy— but his parents did their very best with what they did have, and Tom learned the practice of gratitude. Tom became an oral surgeon and has been blessed with a very successful practice in Bowling Green. Tom enjoys giving! He is inspired to give back in a meaningful way and finds personal fulfillment in helping those who are in need.

The Commonwealth Health Free Clinic and The Dental Clinic serve those in our region who are working hard but cannot access or afford insurance or adequate healthcare. The Dental Clinic is available for routine dental matters and the patients pay a small fee based on their income. Frequently, patients postpone dental treatment until they are in extreme pain and in dire need of help. The Dental Clinic sends these individuals to Dr. Thompson, who offers his services to those who urgently require oral surgery treatment and life-changing care.

Tom shares his experience by saying,

The patients I see are in critical need of treatment and are always extremely grateful for the services they receive! I am hopeful that more of my medical and dental colleagues will step up and utilize their God-given skills to help others. Working with The Dental Clinic is a fantastic opportunity to provide much needed services to our region.”

10 COMMONWEALTH HEALTH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2013 Sometimes a crucial situation can result in a very positive outcome!

After Jerry had his surgery, I wasn’t comfortable getting very far from the hospital. I was aware of the Hospitality House and its purpose, but I had not toured the facility. I was so amazed at what a beautiful place it was. It had all of the amenities of home away from home.

My stress level was quickly relieved and I stayed four nights there until Jerry was released. I felt very comfortable, secure and was able to get a good night’s rest, have a shower and refresh myself. I was also able to launder my clothes there. Most importantly, I was only minutes from the hospital and could get there quickly if need be.

For any family who may have a long hospital stay because of a serious or terminally ill loved one, please consider inquiring about the Hospitality House and make your hospital stay a more stress free and pleasant experience. My experience was a very rewarding and pleasant one!”

Mr. Jerry Baker is the quintessential philanthropist! His genuine desire to give comes from a wellspring of deep, personal gratitude. Mr. Baker did not grow up experiencing all of the ideal advantages he wants others to have. But what he did have was the maturity to recognize the value of education and the ethics of hard work which allowed him to change the pathway of his future.

Mr. Baker has long been an advocate for excellence in healthcare in our region. He committed his gift of strong leadership from the very start of Commonwealth Health Foundation and worked with other dedicated individuals to start The Warren Society.

He recalls the power of engaging his peers.

Gifts come in all shapes and sizes. An envelope bears a check, a fundraising event reflects countless donor hours, a beams the results of dental care. . . anda tree becomes a symbol of treasured memories from before, memories we create now, and memories we know will be cherished by future generations.

George Schiff knows a lot about trees! When he learned that Commonwealth Health Foundation needed an evergreen tree for Make The Season Bright, he quickly donated his professional services as an arborist, and offered to find, harvest and plant a beautiful tree. Make The Season Bright celebrations are held on The Medical Center campuses in Bowling Green, Scottsville and Franklin during the holiday season. People give donations for loved ones that are reflected in the sparkling lights that adorn a holiday tree as funds are raised to benefit Commonwealth Health Free Clinic and The Dental Clinic.

George knew just the sort of tree that was needed in Bowling Green but his careful plans to bring in a tree from the East Coast were derailed by unexpected weather patterns. More than once! But George kept the faith.

Who better to be a part of these unforeseen circumstances than our local weather celebrity – Chris Allen. With only days to go before the celebration, the tree finally arrived. George’s team shivered outside of The Medical Center, in frigid conditions, to plant the tree on the very day that Chris welcomed his newborn baby grandson. Several evenings later, Chris took on his traditional role of hosting Make The Season Bright. Twinkling lights cast a magical glow as musicians sang and heads were bowed in silence. Then Chris shared his emotional story of becoming a grandfather on the day the tree was planted. Chris looks forward to bringing his precious grandson to future celebrations around the tree. As the child grows, so the tree will grow When we plant a tree, we deeper roots and branches that reach don’t plant it for ourselves heavenward as many generations continue but for our children. to Make The Season Bright. ■ ■ The Reverend Mae “Mother” Wyatt
